They were travelling from Jerusalem to Emmaus when the risen Let us pray for those in our Community who have died: Jesus joined them, seemingly out of nowhere, opened George Crook and their eyes to the Scriptures, and then revealed himself James Lillis, Uncle of Shelley Porter to them in the breaking of the bread. He did more than open their minds and hearts as he broke bread with them. By breaking and sharing, we For Individual and Family Reflection grasp the virtue of compassion. Compassion literally Next Week's Reading— May 11, 2014 means “to suffer with.” Christ, who is the bread of life, broke and emptied himself on the cross. By doing First Reading: Acts 2:14a, 36-41 so, the travellers slowly began to find new faith as the Second Reading: 1 Pt 2:20b-25 old faith had left them. There Catholic Bible is available at are some who have to put their fingers into the wounds http://usccb.org/bible/ of Jesus’ brokenness before rediscovering a deeper faith. Suffering is our teacher! Ministry to the Sick It is a paradox of faith, we all face at one time or another. In the recently released diary of Mother and Homebound: Theresa, she speaks of her “dark night” of faith which began shortly after her ministry in Calcutta. "Where is Would you like to have someone my faith?" she wrote. "Even deep down… there is nothing but emptiness and darkness... If there be God bring you the Eucharist. — please forgive me." After her faith “support system” was taken from her, she echoed similar words Please call the Parish Office at of Jesus from the cross of being forsaken. St. Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Parish Community “Where Earth meets Heaven” Our Mission Statement As a welcoming community, we celebrate our life, conscious of our multi-ethnic traditions, vowing unity with Christ in our multi-cultural differences. We usher in our lives (being evangelized) and proclaim (as evangelizers) the reign of God as Priests, Prophets and Kings, and in so doing, we celebrate our discipleship in Christ Jesus. We extol “being Church” through the formation of Small Faith Communities as a way of life in being priests, prophets and kings; thus, we become economically stable and self-reliant as we give special attention and solicitude to our youth and the needy. “They were faithful to the teaching of the apostles, the common life of sharing, the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42) A message from Fr. HOW DOES THE CATHOLIC CHURCH DEAL WITH THE NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS IN A CONSTRUCTIVE WAY? (FOCUS ON ASIA) John Mansford Prior, SVD* The question posed in the title can be answered only after we grasp the phenomenon we are facing. So let us begin with some basic data. DIVERGENT PATTERNS Pentecostalism has set its stoutest roots among Asian ethnic minorities and social classes which lack political or ideological power.1 Five Asian countries are witnessing the fastest growth of Pentecostalism as a grassroots movement and where, with one exception, there are significant numbers of Catholic charismatics, namely China, South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia and India. The greatest increase is found in South Korea, Indonesia and the Philippines.2 PENTECOSTAL MOVEMENTS IN ASIA3 Classic Pentecostals4 Mainline Churches Neo-Pentecostals China 47,686 (0%) 629,491 (1%) 53.6 m.
