Mark shared this from the plane to NYC, but it speaks to my experience, too. Good night all and farewell. As Spencer would say (or Mark and Rob as Spencer): It's been REAL!

Mark Marino

It is 2:00am EDT. Here's a paragraph from Jean Baudrillard's essay "Please Follow Me," which reflects on two projects by Sophie Calle. I read it on the plane while Jeff slept. It reminds me of the past week. Goodnight, all my lovelies. xoxo

Before getting on a plane to go back to NYC with Mark, Jeff gave me this shirt. I think he's trying to tell me that LA me the new me with my auditioning and surfing and sunny new outlook, but the baristas keep snickering when they see me. These Angelenos are strange folks, but I think I've finally found my peeps. Home at last!

Claire, before becoming you I thought you were awfully quiet here, albeit feisty. And I've always admired your sense of trickery; I too am a trickster. Our tricks, I would argue, are not without generosity. When we combine them, we become new, and I hope others—e.g., your and my friends—have become a little new too. It's hard to be a woman on Fakebook. This is something I'll carry with me. Whereas people perceive my antics as playful and goodnatured; they may perceive you as... See More

I'm going back East, where I belong, and there's FlyFi on this plane, which means I can once again say goodbye, thank you for playing, I love you, etc., from 37,009 feet aboveground. If you know me, you know I relish in the melancholy of goodbyes, but I also relish in saying hello, how are you, so please don't be strangers! I may be once again inactive, whether in Fakebook usage or physical activity (200Hour Yoga Teacher Training be damned), but I will remember you. All of you. xoxo

Mark: Before being you, I thought you were so selfabsorbed. With that selfie class and your selfie stick and all and all your ELO bigwigness. Woke up and read Frank O'Hara's poem "Mayakovsky." He was part of the socalled New York School of Poetry. (Maybe I'll join the New New New New New New New New New New York School when I get to NYC.) Thursday is for flight. I'm boarding a plane and moving to NYC this afternoon! Flying solo, as they say. I can't wait to live in a city with a vegan nickname ("Big Apple"). If I wasn't glutenfree, I'd eat a thousand bagels. Since I can do any ballet, here's a photo of my avatar Claire Donato dancing in front of LA's skyline, for the sake of posterity. I'll miss the apocalyptic beauty of this city's skyline, but I'm excited for my next chapter. And, who knows? I'll probably move back in the spring, maybe to Echo Park. — with Claire Donato.

Very much enjoying Carol J. Adams's critical text, The Sexual Politics of Meat! Chris Rodley, did Peter Singer mention this book at dinner last night? In it, Adams notes that "men who become [vegan] are particularly likely to be https://www.facebook.com/markcmarino 10/49 8/13/2015 Mark Marino ridiculed as 'effeminate, a sissy, a fruit,'" because the social construction of masculinity is tied to ideas about food—what "real men" should eat—and this social construction of masculinity perpetuates intersectional forms of oppression. I've already started culling Craigslist for suitable apartments — I'm thinking https://www.facebook.com/markcmarino 18/49 8/13/2015 Mark Marino

Silverlake or Echo Park, away from LAX's lights and din. Of course, we'll both have to bring our families, and there's a good chance we'll need to set aside a spare room for Claire Donato and Jeff T. Johnson's visits to LA (those two rabblerousers occupy a lot of psychological space). In other words, things may get expensive, but money is a small price to pay for real friendship.

The Roomie Test: I should live with Jeremy! My ideal roomie would be Jeremy Douglass. Do you want to know which of your friends you would be best suited to live with? Take Fastighetsbyrån’s Roomie Test to find out! SAMBOTESTET.NU

Total surprise today: lunch with Spencer Pratt & Heidi Montag. Yes, Mark set it up for me since we worked together on Speidishow. So wild. Heidi asked me so many questions about being vegan and complimented my hair many times (what IS it with these LA people?). Spencer wanted to talk poetry and reconsidering the 2nd body's mind's eye. He's much more interested in poetry than was depicted on Marriage Bootcamp, has a signed edition of a Robert Frost 1st printing. I told him I might write him into my novel as an abstract thought wandering through the netherworld. But I lied because I think I'm going to actually write him in as an imaginary number. Go all Magic Toolbooth on him. We also commiserated about the BIZ given the tragedy of my audition. You could drown in all the fakes and phonies, quoth the Spence. — with Spencer Pratt and Heidi Pratt.

Woke up feeling kind of Waldenfiltered with my back singing the song of seat belt safety from me paddling down the LA River yesterday. I could just medicate with some natural pain killers (recommendations?) or maybe today's the day I have to start working out, maybe running or skipping or crossfit. I don't know if it's watching all my friends fitbit updates or watching all these Silver Lakers jog around so earnestly, hipster beards and scarves dangling in the wind, but I'm seriously thinking of starting a new workout regimen. Quick breakfast at the Silver Lake, but not too much since Mark arranged a surprise lunch for me. More to come.

I may want to live in Brooklyn, but why would I ever want to leave Los Angeles? I am in love with this city's gorgeousmurderous sun, its farm fresh food, and my proximity to LAX, Santa Monica, and Malibu. As Davin Heckman pointed out this morning, even LA's traffic has a romantic allure: it is part of this city's mythology, its subtle body. When I drive through it (or: when I'm stuck in it!), I remember why I love living here—why, as a young man living in South Bend, I wanted to commit to teaching and making art in this waterless urban wilderness. If you don't believe me, study the photograph below: Doesn't it make you want to live here too, stretched out in the brilliant red and white streaks like a sunbather on the beach?

Here is a photograph of the shadow I saw at Santa Monica Pier this afternoon. This was after my Segway lesson but before returning the vehicle —or should I say "twowheeled motorized personal vehicle consisting of a platform for the feet mounted above an axle and an upright post surmounted by handles"? My shadow: she is, to quote Clarice Lispector, "someone I've never seen before." And when I "have [...] time to observe [her], I incarnate myself in [her] and thus take a great step toward knowing who it is. And this intrusion into a person, whoever it may be, never ends in selfaccusation: once I incarnate myself in [her], I understand her motives and forgive. I must be careful not to incarnate myself into a dangerous and attractive life, and thus not want to return to myself."

This Saturday is my day, a day for selfactualization with the kids. Slept in, made blueberry pancakes (with only a little bit of honey), and am currently rubbing some SPF 70 on my porcelain skin at Santa Monica Pier. I can't wait to consult with Zoltar and go to Billabong (#shorts)! I participated in a powerful meditation this morning in which my instructor, Thad, encouraged me to look into my mind's eye from the perspective of another. Is it bad that I sang Sia to myself the whole time ("Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking")? I feel Yin/Yang harmony today, Kali arms vogueing in the off shore breeze.

Thanks for your kind words today, everyone. It's been a Friday of many firsts — and of muchneeded firsttime realizations. I've been sad, and it occurs to me I need to take better care of myself, which people in LA refer to as "self care." Along these lines, add to my list of new experiences this evening's hot stone massage at Spa Soleil in Marina del Rey. The masseuse, Jack, placed my feet in tea water before the treatment started. Facebook (or Fakebook, as my friend Claire Donato calls it) is a space of many masks. This is an idea I think a lot, but never in public. Not that Facebook is public — it's privately traded. What I'm trying to say is that this trapezoid injury is making me think a lot about the masks I wear everyday: Mentor Mark, Mark of Competency, Mark the Raconteur. Mark the Raconteur's mask is so permanently glued to his (my) face that even his (my) friends can't believe I would undertake an intense fitness regimen. This injury, however minor it may be, is a wake up call. I've been a Mark of Many Masks, and my body is trying to tell me that. Sorry to be so moody—I want to maintain a positive mask—but I'm feeling pretty sad.

Sorry for the afternoon silence, everyone, but my cheeky posts about the https://www.facebook.com/markcmarino 38/49 8/13/2015 Mark Marino

new fitness routine (or should I say 24hour addiction) came back to pinch me in the nerve—literally. While attempting postCrossfit chinups at Muscle Beach, something went awry in my right trapezius (I think that's the word? see illustration...) muscle. It's not a major injury, but it's definitely reminiscent of the worst stress pains I felt when working on my PhD at Riverside. Guess I overdid it. On the bright side, I guess I now have an excuse to try hot stone massage, something I've always wanted to do. Send me healing energy, or don't, because I did this to myself. I'm rarely humbled, but this experience feels humbling. #facepalm

Friday is for trying new things. I started the day off with a 6:00am class at CrossFit City of Angels on Melrose. It was Intermediate, not Beginner — an oversight on my part — but I made it through by resting during the exercises I couldn't quite perform. I'm excited to report that I was able to do nine push up handstands (against a wall) before collapsing with my SmartWater. As for now, I'm famished! Eating a can of tuna and a chocolate protein shake while I type this. I can see why people get addicted to working out! I feel so great!
