Indie Mixtape 20 Q&A Is with Tomberlin, Who Watches Hocus Pocus Whenever It's on TV :: View email as a web page :: Is it controversial to argue that Big Thief thus far has peaked with their second album, 2017’s Capacity? We were in early with this band — the great 2016 debut Masterpiece was almost like an alt-country record, definitely not the sort of thing that tastemakers get excited about. But Capacity was quieter, less direct, more atmospheric — basically the Big Thief sound, fully released. We still feel like that’s the best distillation of what they do. Last year’s UFOF and Two Hands are where the sound of the band starts to merge more with Adrianne Lenker as a solo artist. Just compare those records to Lenker’s two new solo efforts, Songs and Instrumentals. They are basically a solo folkie records, more akin to something like early Elliott Smith or Sun Kil Moon than the indie Americana sound of Big Thief. Does she pull it off? Hear what we think in the new episode of Indiecast. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century In case you missed it... We've got your back with the perfect soundtrack for watching the leaves turn with a new YouTube playlist featuring tracks from The Cure, Tears For Fears, Alex G, Japanese Breakfast, and many more. The new episode of Indiecast also reviewed the new album from Beabadoobee. Miley Cyrus covered Pearl Jam during her MTV Unplugged episode. We're still drying our tears after listening to the new full-band Julien Baker track, which previews her new album Little Oblivions. She also was understanding of Ariana Grande and Adele fans who were enraged after indie subscription service Vinyl Me, Please teased a "big new album" that turned out to be Baker instead of two of the biggest pop stars in the world. The latest Indie Mixtape 20 Q&A is with Tomberlin, who watches Hocus Pocus whenever it's on TV. Transnational Habitus: Mariem Hassan as the transcultural representation of the relationship between Saharaui music and Nubenegra records Luis Gimenez Amoros Submitted in partial fullfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Rhodes University PhD (thesis) Department of Music and Musicology Supervisor: Dr Lee Watkins I Abstract This thesis expands on primary field research conducted for my MMus degree. Undertaken in the Saharaui refugee camps of southern Algeria (2004-2005) that research - based on ethnographic data and the analysis of Saharaui music, known as Haul 1- focussed on the musical system, the social context of musical performance and the music culture in Saharaui refugee camps. This doctoral research examines Saharaui Haul music as practised in Spain and is particularly focussed on its entry, since 1998, into the global market by way of the World Music label, Nubenegra records. The encounter between Saharaui musicians and Nubenegra records has created a new type of Saharaui Haul which is different to that played in the refugee camps. This phenomenon has emerged as a result of western music producers compelling Saharaui musicians to introduce musical changes so that both parties may be considered as musical agents occupying different positions on a continuum of tradition and change. Nubenegra undertook the commodification of Saharaui music and disseminated it from the camps to the rest of the world. A musical and social analysis of the relationship between Nubenegra and Saharaui musicians living in Spain will form the basis of the research in this thesis. In particular, Mariem Hassan is an example of a musician who had her music disseminated through the relationship with Nubenegra and she is promoted as the music ambassador of the Western Sahara.

Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. • " African Blues": the Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse
“African Blues”: The Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse A thesis submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Saul Meyerson-Knox BA, Guilford College, 2007 Committee Chair: Stefan Fiol, PhD Abstract This thesis explores the musical style known as “African Blues” in terms of its historical and social implications. Contemporary West African music sold as “African Blues” has become commercially successful in the West in part because of popular notions of the connection between American blues and African music. Significant scholarship has attempted to cite the “home of the blues” in Africa and prove the retention of African music traits in the blues; however much of this is based on problematic assumptions and preconceived notions of “the blues.” Since the earliest studies, “the blues” has been grounded in discourse of racial difference, authenticity, and origin-seeking, which have characterized the blues narrative and the conceptualization of the music. This study shows how the bi-directional movement of music has been used by scholars, record companies, and performing artist for different reasons without full consideration of its historical implications. i Copyright © 2013 by Saul Meyerson-Knox All rights reserved. ii Acknowledgements I would like to express my utmost gratitude to my advisor, Dr. Stefan Fiol for his support, inspiration, and enthusiasm. Dr. Fiol introduced me to the field of ethnomusicology, and his courses and performance labs have changed the way I think about music.

  • DESERT BLUES Chor. Paul Boizot, 2015. Music; Nak Amadjar
DESERT BLUES Chor. Paul Boizot, 2015. Music; Nak Amadjar Nidounia by Tamikrest (a Tuareg band from Mali), from album Toumastin, available from Amazon mp3* or ITunes. Desert Blues is the name given to a genre of music, initially from the band Tinariwen, which mixes traditional Malian Tuareg material with electric guitars and bass guitars. Some of the lyrics reflect the experience of this community, which has involved war and dislocation. The lyrics to this song are an (extreme!) example, so I have appropriated the term “Desert Blues” for the title of the dance. Dance themes could be: journey, passage, the good and the bad, concern for suffering of the people. Or, as usual, ignore all that and just enjoy the steps with the music! Rhythm 4/4. Steps are slow-quick-quick-slow-slow. Slow = 2 beats and quick = 1 beat. Formation; open circle or circle. Arms V. Start – after approximately 10 bars, on the strong beat after the first two syllables of the singing. 1. sR, Lxf q, replace R q, sL, sR, Lxb,sR q, close L q, sR, sway L. 2. I'm just a passenger of life, which as it come, will also take its leave. My soul and heart know it, and I also believe that I was not created to be eternal.

  • August 13, 2019 Big Thief Announce New Album, Two Hands, Due
August 13, 2019 For Immediate Release BIG THIEF ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM, TWO HANDS, DUE OCTOBER 11TH VIA 4AD, AND PRESENT LEAD SINGLE, “NOT” CATCH THEM ON TOUR THIS FALL Two Hands Cover Artwork Big Thief are pleased to announce their new album, Two Hands, due October 11th via 4AD, and present its lead single, “Not.” The band had only just finished work on their 3rd album, U.F.O.F. -“the celestial twin”- days before in a cabin studio in the woods of Washington State. Now it was time to birth U.F.O.F.’s sister album -“the earth twin”- Two Hands. 30 miles west of El Paso, surrounded by 3,000 acres of pecan orchards and only a stone’s throw from the Mexican border, Big Thief (a.k.a. Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, Max Oleartchik, and James Krivchenia) set up their instruments as close together as possible to capture their most important collection of songs yet. Where U.F.O.F. layered mysterious sounds and effects for levitation, Two Hands grounds itself on dried-out, cracked desert dirt. In sharp contrast to the wet environment of the U.F.O.F. session, the southwestern Sonic Ranch studio was chosen for its vast desert location. The 105-degree weather boiled away any clinging memories of the green trees and wet air of the previous session. Two Hands had to be completely different— an album about the Earth and the bones beneath it. The songs were recorded live with almost no overdubs. All but two songs feature entirely live vocal takes, leaving Adrianne’s voice suspended above the mix in dry air, raw and vulnerable as ever.
