Photo: Dean Fidelman n Saturday evening, May 16, BASE jumpers Dean Potter O (http://www.outsideonline.com/1898131/aerialist) and Graham Hunt died after attempting a wingsuit flight from Taft Point, a 7,500- foot promontory that overlooks Yosemite Valley and El Capitan. Potter has been a fixture on the climbing and BASE-jumping scene in Yosemite since the late 1990s. According to Yosemite chief of staff Mike Gauthier, the pair made the jump late Saturday. Their spotter heard two sounds that could have been impacts or could have been the noises made by parachutes snapping open. She followed standard protocols, first trying to reach the pair by radio, with no luck, and then moving to a predetermined meeting place. “They were optimistic, thinking that the men might have been arrested,” says Gauthier. BASE jumping is illegal in Yosemite National Park. Yosemite Search and Rescue (YOSAR) initiated a hasty search, but the rangers were unable to locate the pair overnight. Potter and Hunt had been attempting to fly along terrain that required them to clear a notch in a rocky ridgeline. “It’s kind of a trickier flight to go through this notch,” Gauthier says. On Sunday morning, a state police helicopter was able to spot both bodies from the air. No parachutes had been deployed. Two rangers were then airlifted to the site to perform the recovery. Survivors include Potter’s girlfriend Jennifer Rapp and his dog, Whisper, a blue heeler who has played a prominent role in Potter’s adventure life for the past few years. Potter first came to prominence in Yosemite in the late nineties, when he began making bold solo and free-solo ascents of many of the park’s classic rock routes. By the middle aughts, he’d elevated slacklining—tightrope walking on a piece of webbing—to an extreme art form, making safe crossings of such notable features as Lost Arrow Spire, in Yosemite, and the Three Gossips feature in Arches National Park. Many times he’d make these crossings with no safety tether. Potter came under fire in 2006 after he free soloed Delicate Arch, in Arches National Park, a sandstone feature that appears on Utah license plates. Potter always maintained that the ascent was both lawful and respectful (http://www.outsideonline.com/1825021/how- delicate-was-dean). “I was just climbing a beautiful rock that hadn’t been free climbed before,” he told me in February. Potter continued to innovate in the world of extreme sports. In 2008, he climbed the 5.12 Deep Blue Sea route on the north face of Switzerland’s 13,020-foot Eiger with only a parachute on his back. He dubbed the sport free-basing. He also began crossing highlines using a parachute for safety. Last year Potter and Rapp produced a film called When Dogs Fly (http://www.outsideonline.com/1963226/dean-potter-releases-full- length-dog-wingsuit-film) that chronicled Potter’s adventures BASE jumping with his dog, Whisper. The eventual footage of Whisper, wearing goggles and cinched between Potter’s back and his parachute pack, became an online sensation, though some people worried about Whisper’s safety.     AAC Publications Summary: new routes, major linkups, and speed ascents California, Yosemite National Park In addition to the routes described in more detail in this section, as well as Mikey Schaefer’s Father Time route on Middle Cathedral [see feature article in this AAJ], there are a few other significant new routes to report from Yosemite Valley in 2012. Luis “Lucho” Rivera and Dan McDevitt free-climbed Romulan Freebird (10 pitches, V 5.12b/c) on Fifi Buttress, across from the Leaning Tower. McDevitt first established the route as an aid climb in 1999. The free version is described as a harder version of the Rostrum, with thin and sustained 5.12 cracks. Additionally, Alex Honnold set out to free the 1,550’ west face of the Leaning Tower, freeing the lower portion of the wall directly via a hard slab he called A Gift From Wyoming (550’, 3 pitches, 5.13c), in honor of the late Todd Skinner, who originally projected the upper west face. The upper portion, a potential free version of the aid route Jesus Built My Hotrod, is estimated at hard 5.14 or even 5.15 and awaits a successful redpoint.     Destination: Arches National Park, Moab, Utah Several years ago I took my first month-long road trip around the American West. Planned stops included Santa Fe and the Grand Canyon among others. I did have a goal to include stops in the western states I hadn’t been to before. I would have picked off Utah with a planned stop at Four Corners while on my way to the Grand Canyon, but my wall calendar had a cool picture of Delicate Arch in southeast Utah’s Arches National Park. I wasn’t at all familiar with Utah’s red rock country at the time, but I really wanted to see Delicate Arch. So I made Arches National Park my Utah destination as I travelled from Santa Fe to the Grand Canyon. Needless to say, I fell in love with Arches and more broadly the entire Colorado Plateau region. I’ve since explored many great destinations in the region, and I’ve been back to Arches several times since that first visit. Arches, after all, is my favorite national park. But I’m not the only one who’s discovered Arches National Park. Visitation has soared, close to doubling in just the last decade. For several months a year, the line to get into the park is long. The campground is routinely full. Parking lots at all the key attractions are often full – and you’re delayed from trying your luck elsewhere by cars blocking the road waiting for parking spots to open. Hiking the main trails are very social affairs rather than quiet wilderness experiences.

In Learning To Fly, we meet Davis as she leaves for a countrywide tour to promote her first book. She is managing the fallout from what she refers to as “the incident”: her then-husband Dean Potter’s controversial 2006 ascent of Delicate Arch in the Utah desert, which led to a media uproar, a heated community-wide discussion, and both Potter and Davis being dropped by their primary sponsors. By page 13, she writes that she “was without a marriage, without a paycheck, and pretty much without a career. In a life defined by risk and uncertainty, almost all of my anchors were gone.” So Davis did what the rest of us wish we could do when we get fed up with climbing: She took her dog, Fletch, and her pickup truck to Colorado and spent a summer learning to skydive. Living on savings, she couch-surfs near the drop zone, jumps out of airplanes as often as possible, and finds a new life philosophy: “When death holds no more fear and when you’ve lost the things most precious to you, there’s nothing more to be afraid of.” By the end of summer she has grown to love the feeling of falling, come to terms with her failed marriage, and found her way back to climbing with a free-solo of the Diamond on Longs Peak.
