2012 was a very special year for Greater Volunteers, as we celebrated our 40th anniversary of service to the community. Since our founding, we have engaged more than 20,000 volunteers, who have provided 17 million hours of service to over 500 local nonprofit organizations. We are very proud of these achievements.

We held several events during the year to mark this milestone, including an annual volunteer recognition luncheon which drew 450 guests, our 20th annual Viva Volunteers gala event, and a forum on the future of volunteerism, at The City Club.

To continue our success, we have to look forward even as we celebrate our past. Like any strong ‘team’ (to use a favorite Cleveland analogy), we are always refining our game plan. Lately, we have been asking questions such as: • How can we attract volunteers who have busy professional and personal lives? • How do we better measure our impact on people and organizations? • What can we do to give volunteerism a central role in the region’s civic conversation?

While continues to improve economically, many needs remain. We are focusing our efforts on mobilizing volunteers to address our community’s most pressing social issues, such as hunger, education (of both children and adults), access to health care, and job preparedness.

Greater Cleveland Volunteers is grateful to so many: our dedicated board and committee members, talented staff, wonderful partner agencies, generous financial supporters, and our thousands of volunteers. Together, they enable us to fulfill our mission of engaging people with meaningful and impactful volunteer opportunities.

We thank each of you for your involvement and support.

Michael E. Smith Joy Banish President, Board of Directors Executive Director

2 The AARP Experience Corps Program engaged over 200 adults age 50 and up to tutor students, grades K-3, during the 2012-2013 school year. Volunteers tutored 1075 students in 13 Cleveland Metropolitan School District buildings to help them learn critical literacy skills needed to become successful readers.

The My Mentor My Friend Program had 40 caring adults volunteering in this lunchtime mentoring program with 4th, 5th and 6th grade students in four Cleveland schools. The 40 mentored students showed improvement in attendance, academic attitude, social skills and self-esteem.

Our RSVP program was changed in 2012 to focus on engaging volunteers, age 55+, in meeting community needs in the following areas: • Access to Healthcare • Disaster Services • Housing and Job Preparedness • Food Security • Health Education • Prison Visitation • Services to Seniors

Team Event Volunteers assist at over 50 special events annually providing done-in-a-day support to nonprofits throughout Cuyahoga County. Volunteers assist with both preparatory efforts as well as at events such as health fairs, fundraising activities, walks, runs, and more.

Community Volunteers These individuals age 18+ serve the community by volunteering regularly at a wide range of local nonprofits, including arts and cultural institutions, health care organizations, environmental stewardship agencies, senior programs, and medical facilities.
