1 Wednesday, 5 October 2016 2 (10.30 am) 3 THE CHAIRMAN: Good morning, Mr Beard. 4 MR BEARD: Mr Chairman, members of the tribunal, we are 5 moving on to factual evidence, and the first witness to 6 be called is Mr John Petter. 7 MR JOHN RICHARD MARTIN PETTER (sworn) 8 Examination-in-chief by MR BEARD 9 MR BEARD: Mr Petter, good morning. First of all, you 10 should have in front of you a set of bundles -- ah, they 11 are behind. That is a good start. 12 Those bundles, just for the tribunal's information, 13 should contain material that is confidential to BT. It 14 is obviously not material that is confidential to other 15 parties. So some of the redactions will be different 16 from the material you have before you. 17 Could you be passed bundle N1, or core 1, depending 18 on how it is labelled. If you could turn to tab B, 19 there is a document that, on the first page, is said to 20 be a witness statement of Mr John Richard Martin Petter. 21 If you turn to the back of that document, do you have 22 a signature page? 23 A. Yes, I do, page 79. 24 Q. Is this your witness statement? 25 A. That's right, it is, yes. 1 1 Q. Just for the tribunal's note, the versions you have 2 won't have a signature on the back page because, when 3 the confidentiality marking was done, it was done on an 4 electronic version? 5 THE CHAIRMAN: You will be pleased to know that I do have 6 a signature page.

  • Researching Digital on Screen Graphics Executive Sum M Ary
Researching Digital On Screen Graphics Executive Sum m ary Background In Spring 2010, the BBC commissioned independent market research company, Ipsos MediaCT to conduct research into what the general public, across the UK thought of Digital On Screen Graphics (DOGs) – the channel logos that are often in the corner of the TV screen. The research was conducted between 5th and 11th March, with a representative sample of 1,031 adults aged 15+. The research was conducted by interviewers in-home, using the Ipsos MORI Omnibus. The key findings from the research can be found below. Key Findings Do viewers notice DOGs? As one of our first questions we split our sample into random halves and showed both halves a typical image that they would see on TV. One was a very busy image, with a DOG present in the top left corner, the other image had much less going on, again with the DOG in the top left corner. We asked respondents what the first thing they noticed was, and then we asked what they second thing they noticed was. It was clear from the results that the DOGs did not tend to stand out on screen, with only 12% of those presented with the ‘less busy’ screen picking out the DOG (and even fewer, 7%, amongst those who saw the busy screen). Even when we had pointed out DOGs and talked to respondents specifically about them, 59% agreed that they ‘tend not to notice the logos’, with females and viewers over 55, the least likely to notice them according to our survey.

The PSB channels (BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, ITV1, Channel 4, Channel 5, BBC News, S4C and BBC Alba) are expected together to fulfil the purposes and characteristics, although it is also acknowledged that each PSB channel has a specific remit. • The PSB tracker asks respondents to rate specific TV channels on each of the PSB purposes and characteristics relevant to that channel. • The PSB purposes and characteristics were put into everyday language for the PSB Tracker survey, which asked respondents to give their opinions on the PSB statements, both in terms of their importance, and their delivery by the PSB channels (see slides below). • Regular viewers of each channel were asked to rate the channel on the statements, using a ten-point scale. Within this report a rating of 7, 8, 9 or 10 has been taken as a positive response, indicating that a viewer sees the channel/channels as delivering against this purpose/characteristic. • The survey reports the opinions of self-defined ‘regular viewers’ of each PSB channel, on the delivery of that channel’s PSB purposes and characteristics.
