“Shining the Light of Christ with Mary and the Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary”
“Shining the Light of Christ with Mary and the Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary” October 27, 2018 St. Thomas Catholic Church The Holy Rosary • One tradition tells us that the Rosary came from Saint Dominic Guzman around the year 1221. Saint Dominic had been to southern France to preach against the Albigensian heresy, which denied the goodness of creation and held that the spirit is good but that matter (including the body) is evil. A common saying in Albigensianism was “the body is a tomb,” suggesting that true freedom is realized only when one is freed from the flesh. This heresy held that there are two supreme beings: a good god who created the spirit world, and an evil god who created the material world. Since matter was evil to the Albigensians, marriage and procreation were evil. Jesus was not thought to be human, nor was Mary considered the mother of God. Albigensianism denied the humanity of Christ. The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus were only illusions, and the whole concept of the cross in the Christian life was rejected. Cavins, J. (2004). The Rosary: It Beats the Rhythm of Human Life. In S. Hahn & L. J. Suprenant Jr. (Eds.), Catholic for a Reason II: Scripture and the Mystery of the Mother of God (Second Edition, p. 188). Steubenville, OH: Emmaus Road Publishing. The Holy Rosary • Albigensianism, like many newer religious fads, discounted the fact that divinity intersected with humanity in Christ. In contrast to this dualism, the prayers of the Rosary continually focus on the reality of the Incarnation. -
Spre O Nouă Faţă a Bisericii Române Unite*

Martyred Romanian Bishops Fought Communist Regime
Martyred Romanian bishops fought communist regime The memory and witness of Romania’s martyred bishops are a reminder that Christians are called to stand firm against ideologies that seek to stifle and suppress their cultural and religious traditions, Pope Francis said. On the last leg of his visit to Romania, the pope June 2 celebrated a Divine Liturgy during which seven Eastern-rite Catholic bishops, who died during a fierce anti-religious campaign waged by the communist regime in Romania, were beatified. “These pastors, martyrs for the faith, re-appropriated and handed down to the Romanian people a precious legacy that we can sum up in two words: freedom and mercy,” the pope said. According to the Vatican, an estimated 60,000 people filled Blaj’s Liberty Field, while some 20,000 people followed the liturgy on big screens set up in various squares around the city. For Eastern Catholics in Romania, the field – located on the grounds of Blaj’s Greek Catholic Theological Seminary – is both a symbol of national pride and sorrow. It was in Liberty Field where, during the 100th anniversary of the Romanian nationalist revolution that communist authorities formerly dissolved the Eastern-rite Romanian Catholic Church. One of the newly beatified bishops, Bishop Ioan Suciu, the apostolic administrator of Fagaras and Alba Iulia, refused to appear at the event, which was perceived by his flock as a sign that they were called to remain steadfast in their faith and follow the path of persecution and martyrdom. Thirty years after the fall of communism, the sun shined brightly and solemn hymns echoed over the field that was once the site of the Eastern Catholic Church’s darkest period. -
Gender Alternations Within the Toponymic Pair Sodom and Gomorrah
GENDER ALTERNATIONS WITHIN THE TOPONYMIC PAIR SODOM AND GOMORRAH Sabina ROTEN ŞTEIN “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Ia şi Abstract The article deals with the problem of gender alternations in the case of two biblical toponyms, Sodom and Gomorrah , which can be frequently found in the same syntagm in the biblical text. Since toponyms do not relate to the animate/inanimate distinction, it is the phonetic aspect to mostly dictate their being included in gender categories. The cultural influences of the time as well as the language of the original text from which the translation was made have imposed non-feminine variants of these toponyms in the old Romanian language and vowel-ending variants) in modern Romanian.

Confirmation
CONFIRMATION December 1, 2020 Dear Parents and Students, You have elected to register your son/daughter for the St. Agnes Christian Formation program this year. When registering your son/daughter it is stated that our Confirmation program is a two-year program. This program challenges him or her to grow in his or her understanding of the Catholic faith and his or her personal relationship with God. There are several points to make you aware of in preparation for Confirmation (which starts in 8th grade with the student receiving the Sacrament with the completion of 9th grade studies) (due to pandemic this school year completion of 10th grade)). Successful completion of the curriculum includes once a month catechesis, service to others, and spending time with God in prayer. The greatest form of prayer is the celebration of the Mass. As Catholics, we are encouraged to attend weekly Mass in order to recognize God’s love more fully in the Word and Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. While the pandemic poses a particular challenge at this time, students and their families are highly encouraged to either attend weekly Mass in person (Precautions are in place to ensure everyone’s safety) or to seek out an online Mass to encourage growth in love for Christ in preparation for Confirmation. Below is a list of other expectations. Remember, these “assignments” are designed to support our students in their desire to know, love, and serve our wonderful God while helping to prepare them for the reception of the Sacrament. This process for being Confirmed in the Spirit is a commitment from the parish, support from parents, and a commitment from the student that wishes to be Confirmed. -
The Greek Catholics and the Orthodoxs in Contemporary Romania
THE GREEK CATHOLICS AND THE ORTHODOXS IN CONTEMPORARY ROMANIA Victor Neumann The different religious identity of the Greek-Catholics is marked by the fact that they recognize the Pope as the supreme head of the Church. In contrast with the Orthodoxs they practice the Eucharist with yeasted and unyeasted bread; the Holy Spirit comes not only from the Father but also from the Son. Purgatory is the place of the pure like for the Roman Catholics. Their structure is the same as in the Roman Catholic Church, and it respects its discipline and dogmas; the hierarchy is established by papal rules. High functions are nomi- nated through papal decrees. Messes, fasts and holidays are like those of the Orthodox Church. Therefore there are different names for the Church such as Greek-Catholic, Catholic of Byzantine rite or the Church united with Rome. Among the divergent elements the most provocative has always been the submission to the Pope. Studies and articles that tackle the theme of the relations between the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic Church in Romania are dominated by the confessional and sometimes even by the political partisanship. Many of the articles and studies are signed by the representatives of the clergy. Historians, for whom one or the other of the churches has become an important issue, write some. It must be added that the majority of them put into value the documentary information (excerpts from the diocesan archives, from the old books, from the press of the time) important for the knowledge of the past but they do not rise to the level of an objective analysis. -
