The twenty two samples of monitor from Thailand were differentiated by using Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique, this study worked based on cytochrome b gene and 12S rRNA gene. The PCR products were approximate 376 and 450 bp respectively. The cytochrome b gene products were treated with BstXI, BanI, HpaII and EcoRI , the 12S rRNA gene products were treated with ApaI, BamHI and HaeIII to observe the different patterns, which specific to each monitor. The results from both genes analysis showed the different patterns among species, but the variations between subspecies were observed in cytochrome b gene only. -

We found out this error just an hour we arrived before Sungai Koyan; it took us 1:45 minutes extra. _____________ © The Virtual Birders 2018 4 Birds observed on the Peninsular Malaysia between 25 February and 4 March 2018 Introduction It was only ten months ago since our successful trip to Taiwan in 2017 and this time we decided to go to Peninsular Malaysia to see Garnet and Rusty-naped Pitta plus the Mountain Peacock-Pheasant as quickly as possible. It was also a good opportunity to look for some missing Sundae species. We would focus on three areas, the Genting Highlands (for the Mountain Peacock-Pheasant), Fraser’s Hill (Malayan Partridge, Malayan Whistling- Thrush, Black-Laughingthrush and Rusty-naped Pitta) and Taman Negara (lowland species like Garnet Pitta, Malayan Banded Pitta, Short-toed Coucal, Black-throated Babbler, White-necked Babbler, Large Wren-Babbler and Rail-Babbler). -

Galliform Baraminology 4 Abstract This study investigates the number of galliform bird holobaramins. Criteria used to determine the members of any given holobaramin included a biblical word analysis, statistical baraminology, and hybridization. The biblical search yielded limited biosystematic information; however, since it is a necessary and useful part of baraminology research it is both included and discussed. -

Extinction looms for two rare bird species after devastating hurricanes 25 October 2017, by Joann Adkins animals, including 40 endangered east African bongo antelopes, 35 primates including endangered golden lion tamarins, nearly 100 parrots representing a variety of threatened and endangered species and 42 critically endangered Florida grasshopper sparrows. The TCI team is putting in long hours to rebuild what was destroyed at the RSCF facility and to help the animals recover from the stress brought on by the storm. The Florida grasshopper sparrows are the greatest cause for concern. It is the world's most endangered bird with less than 100 remaining in the wild before Irma. HYBRIDIZATION & ZOOGEOGRAPHIC PATTERNS IN PHEASANTS PAUL A. JOHNSGARD The purpose of this paper is to infonn members of the W.P.A. of an unusual scientific use of the extent and significance of hybridization among pheasants (tribe Phasianini in the proposed classification of Johnsgard~ 1973). This has occasionally occurred naturally, as for example between such locally sympatric species pairs as the kalij (Lophura leucol11elana) and the silver pheasant (L. nycthelnera), but usually occurs "'accidentally" in captive birds, especially in the absence of conspecific mates. Rarely has it been specifically planned for scientific purposes, such as for obtaining genetic, morphological, or biochemical information on hybrid haemoglobins (Brush. 1967), trans ferins (Crozier, 1967), or immunoelectrophoretic comparisons of blood sera (Sato, Ishi and HiraI, 1967). The literature has been summarized by Gray (1958), Delacour (1977), and Rutgers and Norris (1970). Some of these alleged hybrids, especially those not involving other Galliformes, were inadequately doculnented, and in a few cases such as a supposed hybrid between domestic fowl (Gallus gal/us) and the lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) can be discounted. -

BIAWAK Journal of Varanid Biology and Husbandry Volume 11 Number 1 ISSN: 1936-296X On the Cover: Varanus douarrha The individuals depicted on the cover and inset of this issue represent a recently redescribed species of monitor lizard, Varanus douarrha (Lesson, 1830), which origi- nates from New Ireland, in the Bismark Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. Although originally discovered and described by René Lesson in 1830, the holotype was lost on its way to France when the ship it was traveling on became shipwrecked at the Cape of Good Hope. Since then, without a holotype for comparitive studies, it has been assumed that the monitors on New Ireland repre- sented V. indicus or V. finschi. Recent field investiga- tions by Valter Weijola in New Ireland and the Bismark Archipelago and phylogenetic analyses of recently col- lected specimens have reaffirmed Lesson’s original clas- sification of this animal as a distinct species. The V. douarrha depicted here were photographed by Valter Weijola on 17 July and 9 August 2012 near Fis- soa on the northern coast of New Ireland. BAHAMA PARROT SCIENTIFIC NAME Amazona leucocephala bahamensis DESCRIPTION The Bahama parrot is a subspecies of the Cuban Amazon parrot. The Bahama Parrot's sci en tifi c name literally means "white head ed Am a zon parrot from The Bahamas." Its white head and mostly green body make the Bahama par rot easily recognized. It has patch es of red feath ers on its cheek, throat and some times its ab do men. Its fl ight feathers, usually hidden from sight when it is perched in a tree, are a beautiful cobalt blue. Viewers are often struck by this un ex pect ed fl ash of colour. The Bahama parrot's short rounded bill is char ac ter is tic of all true par rots. The bill is a powerful multi-purpose tool used for eat ing, climb ing, de fend ing, preen ing (groom ing) and playing. The Bahama parrot has two toes facing forwards and two facing backwards - a confi guration known as zygodactylus. The Bahama parrot is 12-13 inches in length. DIET Endangered Species of The Bahamas A variety of fruits from many shrubs are eaten by the Bahama Parrot. They feed on wild guava, poisonwood berries, pigeonberry, and the fruit from gumbo limbo and pond-top palm. Es pe cial ly during the breeding season, Bahama parrots in Abaco eat the seed from the pine trees. This provides a rich source of protein, essential for the development of Bahama parrot chicks. REPRODUCTION Pair formation begins in early spring. Bahama Parrots are monogamous - they mate for life.
