Both men played for legendary Cypress College basketball coaches Don Johnson (for whom the college’s court is named) and Tom Lubin before continuing to successful careers in the National Basketball Association. Neither was playing basketball when Assistant Coach Lubin discovered, recruited, mentored, and trained them outside team practices. After completing their studies at Cypress College, both played at the University of California at Los Angeles. Not only did both Nater and Eaton play in the NBA, each still holds league records. The Cypress College Foundation’s 39th Annual Americana Awards. The Americana Awards, sponsored by Union Bank, N.A., will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 in the Disneyland Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. Nater started playing basketball in 1969 as a freshman at Cypress College—thanks directly to the effort Lubin. When he first went out for the team he did not own a pair of tennis shoes. He didn’t play much that first year but became an All-American in his second season and was recruited to play at UCLA for the legendary John Wooden. He went on to play in the American Basketball Association, where he was named Rookie of the Year, and then the NBA. He’s the only player to have led both the ABA and the NBA in rebounding.

In 1970, the Charter Class of 18 honorees was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Since then, a select number of administrators, coaches, players and prominent contributors to athletics in Utah have been inducted annually into the Hall of Fame. Mark is a rookie and even though he is 7'4", he played very little in his collegiate days at U. CLA The Utah Jazz signed him to a 5-year contract in hopes that he could develop into an NBA player. Many people thought it was a mistake. However, Mark Eaton has an extreme desire to make it. Jazz Coach Frank Layden told me, "Greg, we probably shouldn't have Mark lift, the kid has got so much to learn I don't want his mind bananas." Mark said, "I want to lift. I know it will help me." Coach Layden cautiously said, "O.K, but go slow please." Mark had lifted some on his own at U.CLA. but nothing like he was going to lift with us. Mark took to it like a duck takes to water. I was amazed at his determination and willingness to learn the technique of the lifts. Mark has some unique problems brought about by his 7'4" frame. First of all he weighs 290 pounds and second, his long limbs make squatting very difficult. Mark, like most very tall players, has weak legs in proportion to his bodyweight. This is one reason why many tall players cannot jump very well. Another reason is that at many levels of competition Mark hasn't needed to jump. He hasn't needed strength to gain position or strength to jump. That's all changed now.

Treatment of the rupture • Usual treatment after rupture consists of the use of a removable walking boot and crutches for the athlete to remain non-weight bearing for 1-2 weeks. • Once the athlete can bear weight pain free in the walking boot (1-2 weeks), they may dispense with the use of the crutches • Continue with the boot (1-2 weeks), finally transitioning to (supportive) shoes when able. • A shoe with proper shank will greatly diminish pain with ambulation • Orthotic control post recovery but not immediately with shoe gear Treatment options? • Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP injections? • One study presented at the AAOS meeting in 2012 showed earlier improvement and longer lasting improvement in comparing a single injection of steroid in a group of patient’s vs a single PRP injection in a group of patients.
