1 Angas, George French. SOUTH AUSTRALIA ILLUSTRATED. Impl. folio, First Edition; pp. [2](colour- illustrated lithographed title, dated 1846, verso blank), [2](typeset title-page dated 1847, verso blank), [2](calligraphic litho-engraved Dedication to Queen , verso blank), [iii]-iv(List of Subscribers), [4](Preface & General Remarks on the Aboriginal Inhabitants of South Australia); 60 superb hand-coloured litho plates, each with facing leaf of descriptive text (Plate 27 with 2 leaves); finely bound in half green morocco with marbled sides, with matching fitted slipcase by Aquarius; (small, unobtrusive stamp of the Zoological Society almost invisibly erased from two early leaves and present on a third; a few leaves with the faintest browning of extreme margins only); an exceptionally fine, unusually clean copy, the colours brilliant & full, with no sign of fading; rare. London; Thomas M’Lean; 1846-47. ***A most attractive copy, both externally and internally, and one of the two outstanding substantial collections of early coloured views of Australia (the other being Joseph Lycett’s Views in Australia, 1824-5), the work contains 41 fine topographical views (on 37 plates), of various parts of South Australia, 19 plates of the Aboriginal inhabitants, their dwellings and artefacts, 3 plates of insects and one of South Australian botany. A new species of Kangaroo is shown on one of the plates. The work is of great importance as a contemporary record of South Australia for, as the Author states in his Preface, “With the hope of preserving time and life-like records of men and scenes, so quickly passing away, I have endeavoured by pictorial representation, to describe the most interesting and peculiar features of South Australia and its Aboriginal inhabitants. I have devoted my time and powers entirely to the accomplishment of this task, visiting all portions of the Colony, and making myself conversant with the manners and habits of native tribes whose existence is unknown to the world”. The information portrayed on the Aborigines is particularly valuable. Two of the plates are by S. T. Gill - the view of Adelaide and that showing the Departure of Captain Sturt, August 1844, on the Central Australian Expedition - these are particularly fine early views of the city - and have been sold separately for astronomical figures. #14526 A$45,000.00 4 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 50 2012.

Kapunda and Burra, in the midnorth of South Australia, with their copper mines and smelting works were Australia’s first purely industrial towns.” - from dustwrapper blurb. #19864 A$110.00 5 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 50 2012.

6 Carroll, F. S. THE NEW COUNTIES, HUNDREDS, & DISTRICT ATLAS OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND NORTHERN TERRITORY, 1876. Together with Map of South Australia, indicating Roads, Distances, relative position of Counties, &c., &c. Showing -- All Boroughs, Post-towns, Villages, Hamlets, Road Boards, Roads, Railways, Rivers, Lakes, Creeks, Mountains, Stations, the Area of County and Station, (the Names, Occupiers, Grazing capabilities and Area of each), the Population of each Town in the Colony, Height of Mountains; Length, Rise, and Fall of Rivers, the quantity of Cereals and Green Crops, Hay, Wine, &c., produced in the different localities, and all the Geographical, Geological, and Physiological matter obtained from the most authentic sources. Compiled by F. S. Carroll. The Maps are compiled from the very latest plans in the Lands Department, by the kind permission of G. W. Goyder, Esq., Surveyor General. The Statistical Matter is furnished by the Government Statist, J. Boothby, Esq. This Atlas is the first of the kind ever produced in the colony, and will be thoroughly authentic to date of publication; it will be found eminently useful to the Merchant and Squatter as a Work of Reference, and with the Schoolmaster or Man of Family as the best means extant of furnishing the rising generation of the Colony with a thorough geographical knowledge of South Australia and the Northern Territory. To His Excellency Sir Anthony Musgrave, K.C.M.G., &c., Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Province of South Australia, This Atlas is, with His Excellency’s permission, Respectfully Dedicated, by His Excellency’s Most Obedient Servant, the Proprietors, F. E. Hiscocks & Co. Demy folio, First Edition; pp. [ii](title, verso index), 24(misnumbered 20); large folding coloured map of South Australia, 25 double-page coloured maps of the city of Adelaide, counties and districts; original half calf with patterned cloth sides, gilt title-panel on front board; (boards a little warped; the large general map with short splits and tears, but sound; some minor marginal staining); a very good, sound copy; rare. Adelaide; Published E. S. Wigg & Son; 1876. ***Ferguson 7981 and 7982 (collation in error). The text is closely set and contains a vast quantity of useful and detailed information on the state of the colony. The plates were printed in colours by F. W. Niven, Ballarat, the letterpress probably done in Adelaide. This atlas is of considerably greater rarity then Hiscocks’ similar atlas of Victoria published two years earlier. #53872 A$4500.00 9 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 50 2012.

DCCXII. Pp. [iv], 304(last Errata), [14](index); 5 folding charts, 19 plates (17 folding), 2 text illusts. Together, 5 vols., including in total 17 charts (15 folding), 52 plates (33 folding) and 2 text illusts.; title-pages in red and black; full contemporary speckled calf, with red-sprinkled edges; all volumes neatly rebacked to style with raised bands and gilt lettering, endpapers restored using contemporary paper; internally generally fine, clean and crisp, with only the odd spot; a fine, very attractive set; rare. Amsterdam; Paul Marret; 1701-1712. ***Detailed collations and bibliographical information on this work are hard to come by, however we believe this set to be quite complete. The first two volumes were first published in 1698 (see Sabin 18381). These volumes did not contain the second part of the present Volume II (Traite des Ventes - see Sabin 18384) and Sabin (in his 18381) refers to a second edition of the two volumes in the same year (1698) presumably of similar configuration to the first. Sabin also refers to a third volume (“Suplement ...) and a fourth (“Voyage ... aux Terres Australes”) both published in MDCCXI (1711), but these are clearly reprints of the volumes here present (1701 and 1705 respectively). Part II to the present Volume II, with its separate title-page, is the first appearance in French of the Treatise on the Winds and clearly was intended to be bound with Part I (as indicated by the catchword on the last page of adverts. to Part I). Sabin’s 18382 refers to several editions in a rather confused and unsatisfactory manner, which may in effect include the present collection. In summary this is a fine set of the first complete edition in French, volumes III, IV and V being the first editions in French, and Volumes I and II being the first complete (augmented) editions; a rare and desirable collection, seldom encountered. #26377 A$13,500.00 14 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 50 2012.

This is the second issue of this work, as usually found, with the cancel title-pages. A very few copies were issued with the date 1826; these are of the greatest rarity. The work is of great importance: Phillip Parker King (the son of Governor Philip Gidley King) was born at Norfolk Island, and became one of Britain’s leading hydrographers. His work considerably furthered the geographical knowledge of the Australian coasts. His charts were very accurate and his extensions and additions to those of Flinders on the Northern and Western coasts of Australia were for many years in practical use by the Admiralty (well into the twentieth century). He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1824. #43380 A$6500.00 36 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 50 2012.

44 South Australia: PLAN OF A COMPANY TO BE ESTABLISHED FOR THE PURPOSE OF FOUNDING A COLONY IN SOUTHERN AUSTRALIA, purchasing Land therein, and Preparing the Land so purchased for the Reception of Immigrants. London: Ridgway and Sons, Piccadilly. 1831. 8vo, First Edition; pp. 66(last blank), 67-74(Appendix); 3 delicately hand-coloured folding maps, appendix; old half calf, with marbled sides (spine a little rubbed; some foxing at end & a little elsewhere); a nice copy; rare. London; Ridgway and Sons; 1831. ***Ferguson 1473 (5 copies only). There are currently only ten copies listed in Australian libraries and two in the U.K. The book was reissued in the following year: this is equally rare. It is the foundation book for the colony of South Australia, containing proposals for the foundation of that colony along the lines propounded by Edward Gibbon Wakefield in 1829. The new colony is proposed for the area between 132 degrees and 141 degrees East on the south coast of Australia, together with the Islands on the coast and the work includes a brief historical account of Flinders’ explorations followed by a detailed survey of the configuration and productive capacity of the country taken from information provided by Flinders, Baudin and King, together with reasoned speculations on the possibility of exports of various commodities from the proposed settlement, with comparisons of the situation at Hobart Town, Sydney, the failed settlement at Swan River and various places even further afield such as Virginia. The eight-page appendix is important in its own right, comprising the report of a sealing expedition in the Brig Governor Macquarrie made in 1819: “Report of a Voyage from Sydney to Kangaroo Island and of Observations made during a stay of seven months on, and near the island, by Captain Sutherland, who in the year 1819 was employed by some merchants of Sydney to command a vessel of 140 tons, expressly fitted out for the purpose of obtaining a cargo of salt and seal skins from Kangaroo Island. Captain Sutherland has been engaged for many years in the trade between England and New Holland, and lately commanded the ship Lang. He is now in London. Oct. 4th, 1831.” This is amongst the earliest extended accounts of sealing activities on the south coast of Australia. #17230 A$14,500.00 49 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number 50 2012.
