    1 Chapter Seven Cold Commodities: Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World Haftor Medbøe Since gaining prominence in public consciousness as a distinct genre in early 20th Century USA, jazz has become a music of global reach (Atkins, 2003). Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp.

    SOLVEIG SLETTAHJELL Solveig Slettahjell (pronounced: Sul-vay Shlet-I-Yell) was born in Bærum near Oslo in 1971 and grew up in the small town of Orkanger near Trondheim. As her father was a pastor, she grew up in church. She sang in choirs from the age of 7 and began accompanying various youth and gospel choirs on the piano from the age of 13. She also sang and played her own versions of hymns, negro spirituals, Norwegian religious folksongs, as well as her own compositions. Studies. Solveig studied classical piano and singing at a secondary school for music in Trondheim, before going on to jazz studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 1992. Here she met Sidsel Endresen, who was her teacher from 1993 and until Solveig finished her ’ degree in 2000. Her final exam consisted of a thesis on the rhythmic aspects of phrasing and a concert, which was the beginning of the Slow motion concept. Musical projects. At the Academy Solveig met the pianist Håkon Hartberg. Together they formed the Slettahjell/Hartberg Duo. The ’repertoire consisted of their versions of country songs, jazz standards, Norwegian folksongs, children songs, music by Prince, Tom Waits and others. The Slettahjell/Hartberg Duo was ’most important musical project until 1996. In 1995 Solveig joined a band called Squid, which worked with their own original material based on soul, acid-jazz, and funk music. They did many concerts until the group disbanded in 1999. Squid recorded one album, “Super”, in 1998. In 1997 she joined the Norwegian experimental vocal quartet Kvitretten.

I den teoretiske oppgavedelen presenteres intervjuer gjort med tre toneangivende norske jazzpianister; Eyolf Dale, Helge Lien og Bugge Wesseltoft. Intervjuene dreier seg omkring improvisasjon og solopiano, og ønsker å svare på hvilke tanker de har om improvisasjon i og utenfor solopiano, og hvordan de forholder seg til det å spille solopiano kontra det å spille i band. Den praktiske oppgavedelen består av tre lydopptak hvor forfatteren av oppgaven selv spiller solopiano med funnene gjort i den teoretiske oppgavedelen som utgangspunkt for komposisjon, improvisasjon og fremførelse. Resultatene viser at oppgavens intervjuobjekter har flere sammenfallende syn på hva som gjør improvisasjon god. Alle trekker frem begreper som kan oppsummeres med begrepene ”musikalsk logikk” og ”storytelling” hentet fra Paul F. Berliners Thinking in jazz: The infinite art of improvisation (Berliner 1994). De er enige i at improvisasjon kjennetegnes ved enkelte hørbare kvaliteter komposisjon vanligvis ikke inkluderer, men er imidlertid ikke enige om hvor langt de to går over i hverandre; hvor spontan er det mulig å gjøre en komposisjon, og hvor gjennomkomponert kan en improvisasjon høres ut? Intervjuobjektene viser meget sammenfallende syn på hvordan kommunikasjon med publikum påvirker deres fremførelser, og på hvilke musikalske kvaliteter som kjennetegner god musikk.

I tillegg til å være kjent verden over for sitt New Conception of Jazz og utgivelser på sitt eget label Jazzland, vil mange også forbinde ham med den vakre og stillfarne jule og vinterplaten ”It’s snowing on my piano”, utgitt på ACT i 1997. ACT sjefen Siggi Loch har helt siden den gang ønsket seg en ny solo piano plate med Bugge og nå kommer den altså endelig. For å få den rette inspirasjonen, nærhet til storslått natur og ikke minst den rette klangen gikk turen til Lofotkatedralen for å spille inn en oppfølger på Steinway pianoet i katedralen. Bugge viderefører stemningen fra ”Snowing” med minimalistiske versjoner av salmer, folketoner, koraller og kjente popmelodier. Med varsomhet og lekenhet improviserer han rundt kjente melodier og stopper opp, puster, avventer og leker med tonene. Bugge sier selv dette om platen: Nå er det 20 år siden Its snowing on my piano kom ut. Den er nok uten tvil den plata jeg har laga som flest mennesker har satt pris på. Det virker på meg som mange bruker plata nesten som en slags meditasjon i en stressa juletid. Jeg synes det er utrolig fint å vite at musikk jeg har spilt kan bety noe for folk som hører på.
