Our guide for the story of cerium was Bengt Hogrelius (Figure 3), who first led us to the Hisinger Manor in Skinnskatteberg (Figure 4), seven kilometers to the east (Figure 2). It was at this manor that Wilhelm Hisinger (1766-1852), a wealthy landowner who made his money in the ironworks business, lived and conducted his mineralogical experiments. He had befriended the young, struggling Jakob Berzelius (1779-1848) in Stockholm, who came to visit the Hisinger Manor frequently.• Hisinger showed to Berzelius a strange, heavy Figure 6. There was a great deal of confusion about zinc, cobalt, and arsenic compounds at this time, and Agricola lumped them into "cobaltum" and "cadmia" classifications.' Agricola was not able to make the connection between his "cobal tum" and the blue pigment called "Zaffer" used in ceramics (our presentcday "cobalt blue"). (Note 6) He could only report that the blue pig ment was obtained from the "residues of bis muth ores." The person who deciphered the nature of cobalt blue (Swedish "fargkobolt") was Georg Brandt (1694-1768), Assay Master of the Stockholm Mint. Brandt had been raised at his father's (Georg Sr.) sumptuous Riddarhyttan Manor (Riddaryhyttan Herregard), (Figure 2). Georg Sr. had developed a thriving copper and Figure 7. Together with more Fe-rich, F-poor members, it forms solid solutions that are important for lanthanide sequestration in the Bastnäs-type skarn deposits in Västmanland. At the type locality (Malmkärra, Norberg district) it occurs as anhedral grains 0.2–3 mm across, in association with fluorbritholite-(Ce), tremolite, a serpentine mineral, magnetite, dollaseite-(Ce) and dolomite. The mineral is allanite-like in appearance; it is dark brown, translucent, with vitreous luster, and has -3 good cleavage parallel to {001}, uneven to conchoidal fracture, and a yellowish gray streak; Dcalc = 4.51(2) g·cm and Mohs hardness 6. Optically it is biaxial (-), with = 1.781(4), calc = 1.792, = 1.810(4) and 2V = 75(5)°. • Bergslagen-Sweden) Summary Report Workshop/06 (Bergslagen-Sweden) Summary Report
ECOMUSEUMS: WHAT’S NEXT? WORKSHOP/06 (BERGSLAGEN-SWEDEN) SUMMARY REPORT WORKSHOP/06 (BERGSLAGEN-SWEDEN) SUMMARY REPORT Before the Swedish meeting: the Long network project. The general purpose of the Long network project was to create an effective environment for good practices exchange among European ecomuseums. The idea was that ecomuseums could play the role of a bridge, connecting the many sustainable development best practices experienced in Europe, support the growth of local districts based on a strong sense of place, and concur in local leadership building. Therefore, the trail we have followed is based on the networks, both locally and at a larger scale. Networks are not only mere organisational schemes. At a certain scale they produce new opportunities and ideas and make collective knowledge growth and evolve. To be observers in the processes and not merely of the processes is crucial in order to understand this kind of cultural phenomena. The steps: • 2004: harmonisation of our approaches and goals in the Sardagna- Trento workshop/04 • 2004/05: task-forces to try to make ideas circulate (fine tuning of ideas). Learning journeys set up at a national level (in Sweden, Italy, Poland) and internationally, between Italy and Sweden. • 2005: report on 2004/05 activities and making of new working groups in the Argenta workshop/05. Once agreed methods and goals, the new aim is to produce something together (main fields: training, travelling exhibition, communication, evaluation schemes, database). • 2005/06: good job for training and exhibition groups, less for communication and evaluation schemes. A scheme for a database is produced and is presently on a trial period.

Among those are the rare earth element (REE) deposits with cerium as the most common element. The Swedish REE mines have been closed for a long time but the increasing demand for REE by modern optic and electronic technology can make these deposits economically significant again in the future. The REE deposits also have an interesting history in that many of the REEs were first discovered in minerals from Swedish deposits, and later named after Scandinavian chemists or deposits.
