The GA highlights what is happening in our Jewish world, not just locally or even nationally but internationally. We hear from the highest level speakers as well as our many partners with “boots on the ground” throughout our Jewish world. November This year’s speakers include: 9-11 I will be in Washington DC. This will be my 4th GA and each one has been special. I enjoy net- working and meeting people from other communities who are just like me – equally supportive of the work of Federation, people who face similar chal- lenges in their Jewish worlds, and sharing in our many successes as a Jew- ish people. As I’ve said on many occasions, Chattanooga has a phenomenal reputation within the Jewish Federation and I love it when people approach me and see “Chattanooga” on my name tag! I feel incredibly proud and humble when I hear about how highly Chattanooga is thought of. But living, breathing and working in our great Chattanooga is a special feeling only a Chattanoogan knows. I hear the Federation GA model is changing this year. It will keep its informational platform but be more exciting and action-oriented, taking a lead from AIPAC and the reform movement’s biennial. We will celebrate our achievements. We will discuss, tackle and take action on challenging issues that face our community. We will show our support for Israel and Jews around the world. We will challenge each other to do more and to do better.

PAGE 2 p Spring 2015 PRESIDENT'S MEMO Zionism: The Unfinished Task PAGE 15 ELECTION SEASON, AGAIN Israel’s electoral structure helps explain frequent returns ISRAEL to the voting booth PAGE 21 INSTITUTE ECHOES OF REVISIONISM MAGAZINE The history and legacy of Menachem Begin IN THIS ISSUE: Israel’s Basic Questions Revisited Experts discuss Zionism and Jewish statehood KOLDIRECTOR'SSPOTLIGHT: HAMACHON LETTER ACADEMIA It is a great pleasure to be able to offer this second issue of Israel Institute Magazine. We are very excited to be able to share with you insights from the work of the Institute over the last several months. In this issue of the magazine, you will be able to read about our ongo- ing discussion on Zionism, a topic that has been the focus of many of the Institute’s recent activities and the research of many of its affiliated scholars. The subject of our annual conference, held this past fall, was the continuing relevance of Zionism as an organizing concept. It is no secret that Israel is undergoing a period of signif- icant change. The founding generation is dwindling and the second generation of state lead- ers – those who were children when the state was created but who turned Zionism from a revolution into an established, enduring and functioning state – are themselves passing on the reins to a generation that was born after the state was created. The Zionism that powered the transformation of the Jewish people from a diaspora nation into a sovereign nation-state must, naturally, evolve. In this issue of Israel Insti- tute Magazine, we report on our annual conference and the ideas that it raised in relation to the meaning of modern Zionism for today’s Israelis and for diaspora Jews.

  • Project Retrospective 2009-2015
PROJECT RETROSPECTIVE 2009-2015 Israel Committee of The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism ISRAEL PROGRAM BANK FOR THE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT Thanks to our partnership with Nefesh B' Nefesh, we have produced a significant Israel Program Bank for the Conservative Movement. It includes all the NBN Ma'alot Grant recipients from 2009 through 2015, supported by Nefesh B'Nefesh in the amount of a total of over $300,000 in distribution. The Program Bank will address a need as expressed over the years. To make it user-friendly, the reader will find two Indexes. The first Index will indicate subject according to pages. For example, someone needing examples of Yom Ha’Atzmaut programs can easily find the appropriate entries, each with title, program description and contact information for the synagogue(s). The second index is by city and state, enabling one to reach out to recipients in his/her area. In all cases, copy me. If the contact information is outdated, I will locate the Rabbi currently serving the synagogue and provide new contact information. Again this represents a significant first. We hope you will find it useful. Looking forward to hearing from you. Rabbi Paul Freedman Director, Israel Strategic Partnerships, Israel Cohort, Conservative Movement Chairman, Masorti Committee on Aliyah & Klitah Jerusalem, Israel e-mail:[email protected] Ma’alot Grants 2009-2015 Program Review USCJ Israel Committee VISION: The vision of the USCJ Israel Committee is to empower Jews in North America through the community of kehillot to fully engage with Israel. The vision is to facilitate and strengthen the connections between Conservative kehillot, the individuals therein and Israel such that Israel is integral to their identities and actions as Conservative Jews.
