Inca Trail and Auzungate Circuit Departs Fridays Twice Each Month April-October

Day 1 Arrive Lima Arrive in Lima. Upon arrival met by a private representative guide and transfer to your hotel in Miraflores. Your hotel is in Miraflores situated next to the Pacific Coast. Filled with excellent restaurants, city parks, and interesting architecture, Miraflores is the perfect first taste of . Accommodations: Jose Antonio, Antara, or similar No Meals

Day 2 Travel to Peru Morning transfer to the airport to catch a connecting flight to Cusco. Our flight will take us over amazing views of snow capped mountains, glaciers and blue mountain lakes, and after just 50 minutes we will arrive in Cusco, a small colonial city nestled high in the . Arriving in the morning we will transfer to the Monesterio, Cusco’s finest hotel or if you prefer the charming El Balcon (all trips are priced with 3 and 5 star options in Cusco). Acclimatizing to the higher altitudes we will relax with a Mate de , a traditional local herbal drink that is known to combat the effects of altitude sickness. The remainder of the morning is free to relax before a pleasant afternoon touring the sights of the city. Cusco is considered the archaeological capitol of the Americas. Our insightful walking tour through Cusco’s narrow winding roads explores the city’s Inca and colonial past. We will visit the , Limacpampa (the site of the harvest festival), the central cathedral with its colonial art, and the Inca Temple of the Sun. In the evening we will have a welcome dinner at Tunapa listening to the sounds of local musicians playing traditional Sierra music. The perfect first night in the Andes. Day 3 Urubamba- of the Incas Today we will explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas and visit the historical Incan ruins of Pisac, with their fascinating layout on the high side of a mountain. All of our trips were designed to coincide with Market Day in the Sacred Valley and we will visit the bustling market in Pisac that is alive with Peruvian color. People from the surrounding villages will be selling everything from local produce to hand knit sweaters. After exploring the ruins and market we will transfer to our beautiful hotel, the Pakaritampu set beneath Inca ruins with gorgeous flower gardens all around the hotel is an oasis and a favorite with all of our guests. Day 4-8 Inca Trail to Day 4 Inca Trial We transfer you from the hotel the train station and take the train to our trail head. From here the small bridge brings us over to Q’ente where we will camp. Before lunch we will walk to through the archaeological site of - a large Inca settlement for storage of grain. Lunch and then we have the afternoon to hike to and visit the surrounding archaeological remains of Q’ente and Machu Q’ente - located amidst Inca terracing. (Time: 4 hours /Distance: 6 K) B,L,D Day 5 Inca Trail The trail winds slowly uphill through a small forest to reach the site of Patallacta. After a short visit we continue up the Cusichaca Valley passing houses of settlers to finally reach the Andean community of Huayllabamba. From here the trail ascends steeply to a large pampa below the first pass, where we camp. Here we have a breathtaking view of Mt. Huayanay. Along the trail up this narrow hanging valley we begin to see a cloud forest that harbors the Queñua tree, a rare forest to be found in the Andes. Camp overnight at Llulluchapampa. Day 6 Inca Trail A spectacular day- the trail ascends towards the pass cossing over a grassy hillside as we leave our campsite at the edge of the treeline behind, bringing us to Warmiwañusca pass (4,050 meters /13,280 ft.). The trail descends to the Pacaymayo River and then climbs slowly past Runkuraqay ruins. From here over a lower pass to , the "waiting village" A clear Inca Trail across a causeway on a now dry lake past a cave, we continue our way along a ridge to finally reach Phuyupatamarca (the town at the edge of the clouds in Quechua) were we camp. (Time:8 hours / Distance: 9 K) B,L,D Day 7 Inca Trail-Machu Picchu After continuing along a buttress and passing Phuyupatamarca ruins, the flag-stoned trail winds sharply down into the cloud forest to the ruins of Wiñay Wayna located below the ridge on the same water course as the previous site, it has well restored Inca Ruins. After a two hour walk through a cloud forest covered Inca Trail we arrive at Machu Picchu the way the Incas used to come across this magnificent citadel at our feet from Intipunku, the door of the sun. (Time: 6-7 hours / Distance:10 K) Accommodations: Inti Inn or similar B,L,D Upgrades available -Sanctuary Lodge (at the ruins) or Machu Picchu Pueblo. Day 8 Machu Picchu The whole day can be dedicated to explore these extraordinary Inca remains, including a visit to Wayna Picchu the mountain overlooking the site. In the late afternoon we will return to Cusco by train enjoying a fabulous view of the valley. Arriving in Cusco we check into the Monasterio or El Balcon. The evening is free to explore Cusco on your own. Accommodations: Monasterio or El Balcon B,L

Day 9 Cusco Today is a free day in Cusco to explore, see the imposing Incan ruins, visit century old churches, and lively markets.. Accommodations: Monesterio Hotel or El Balcon B

Day 10 Cusco-Tinqui We will have an early start to travel to the remote highland village of Tinqui, our starting point for our amazing six-day circuit of Auzungate. Our journey of 8 hours by comfortable private bus will take us through stunning scenery; climbing high over mountain passes before dropping down to the mountain village of Tinqui (12,300 feet). This evening we will camp and enjoy a typical highland dinner. B,L,D

Day 11 Tinqui-Upis We start the day visiting a local family and learning about their way of life in the community of Q'oñamuro. We then continue across the wide open pampas above the tree line past small settlements of herders and weavers where we may buy local procucts. As we slowly approach the northern face of Mt. Auzungate we will run into herds of alpacas. A crew of packhorses and llamas will accompany us along the way. Camp at Upis, with snow capped mountains as our backdrop (14,432 ft). (Trekking: 5-6 hours / Distance: 9 K) B,L,D

Day 12 Upis- Samacancha Our day begins ascending through a wide open river valley below the stunning snow-clad North Face of Auzungate. Ascending through the Inka Pampa Valley we steadily climb the Arapa Pass (15,318 ft). Traversing a stark rolling landscape we slowly descend past several deep blue lakes to reach the valley of Samacancha where we camp on the shores of Lake Pucacocha with its spectacular glacier views (15,006 ft). Above the campsite the rock spire of Mt. Sorimana stands guard. (Time: 7 hours / Distance: 8K) B,L,D

Day 13 Samacancha- Wanu Wanu Today we will cross two high mountain passes. From camp we ascend to Alcatani Pass (15,252 ft). Here we begin our descent to Auzangatecocha - a beautiful blue lake formed by the melting glacier with a view of Azungate’s southern face covered with glacial formations. From Auzangatecocha we start a steep ascent to the Palomani Pass (16,564 ft). Truly a stunning spot looking over endless stretches of mountain scenery. As we cross into the valley of Machuraqay we will see beautiful views of Mt. Mariposa with its cone peak. We descend to Chillcaphinaya at (14,432 ft), a valley filled with grazing Alpacas. The surrounding ridges of the Cordillera Vilcanota have varying hues of rock, sand and reddish earth - a unique Andean panorama. We ascend to the large pampa of Wanu Wanu where we camp (14,596 ft). Day 14 Wanu Wanu- Pacchanta With Mt. Acero looming above we follow a of mountain streams to the Jampa Pass. Mt. Callangate, with its jagged spires covered in ice, dominates our trek as we edge our way over the pass (16,236 ft) with its retreating glacier and ice-fields beckoning us closer. We have lunch at Pachapata. The ridge above offers a view of Lake Qomercocha and Hamacocha. We traverse the ridge and enter the waterhead of Mt. Ninaparayoc with its lake below. A nice walk down this valley with Mt. Auzangate behind us - we have now completed almost a full circle around the mountain Rolling hills now extend below us as we hike into Pacchanta for a chance to visit the hot springs. B,L,D

Day 15 Pacchanta - Cusco We end our trek with a short walk back to Tinqui. Completing our circuit around Auzungate we travel back to Cusco in our private bus enjoying the Andean landscape and again stopping in local villages en route. Evening at leisure in Cusco. Accommodations: Monesterio or El Balcon B,L

Day 16 Cusco-Lima Morning flight to Lima. Upon arrival we will transfer to our day rooms in Miraflores. After lunch we will take a tour of Lima’s Gold Museum or Archeology Museum with their enormous collections of Pre Incan and Incan artifact, gold treasures and other Peruvian wonders. In the evening we will transfer to the airport for our flight. B

Guests may spend the evening in Lima and depart the following morning.

Day 17 Arrive Home

Including: -All trekking equipment (American Sleeping Tents / large tents for every 2 trekkers, dining tent with tables and chairs, and toilet tent with toilet seat) -Staff (Guide through out trip, cooks, horsemen and helpers during trek) -Pack animals to carry gear during trek -All tours -Accommodations in first-class hotels and top quality tents (4 nights Cusco, 1 night Sacred Valley, 1 night Machu Picchi, 1 night and 1 day room Lima, 8 nights camping) -Meals noted in the itinerary -Trekking Permits -Entrance fees including City Pass in Cusco and Machu Picchu Pass -Ground transportation.
