TEA DUTY FLOREUM RENOVATION CHALLENGE!
The members doing tea duty this month are: The Committee has received notice that the Floreum will be undergoing a long-awaited Leon du Toit renovation.
This will have a significant impact on our Society for about 6-7 months. We will not be RAFFLE able to use it for our monthly meetings or our Autumn Show. In addition, we will have There were 2 plants raffled this month; to move our books out of the Library building. The Dendrobium unknown, donated by the Crowe family, was won by Richard Florence. If anyone has any suggestions where we can hold our meetings for the next 6-7 months, The Bulbophyllum scaberulum was won by please contact Marinus Kort. … WOS YEAR-END FUNCTION …
Due to the success of last year’s function at Eagle’s Fare restaurant at Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, the Committee has decided to return to the same venue for this year’s Year-End function.
Members and their spouses/partners are invited to:
Venue: Eagles Fare Restaurant, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. Date: 12h30 for 13h00 to 15h00, Sunday 24th November 2019. Members and Spouses/Partners are invited The Committee will pay for the Buffet and Garden’s entrance fees: Wines & juices will be supplied from the R50 per person advance payment (see below) Please advise Marinus if you have a WildCard or Bot Soc Card or over 60 years old Attendees (except those with a WildCard or Bot Soc Card which must be presented) will have to sign the WOS list at the Entrance There will not be a plant table.
Since we will have to declare a final number of members (and spouses/partners) attending in advance and will be charged on those numbers, the society will ask members to contribute R50 per person, in advance, as commitment to their attendance. This money can be handed to Marinus at the forthcoming monthly meeting on 3 November or sent as an EFT to the banking details at end of this message

Rules of the Plant Table
Every member is encouraged to bring and share their flowering orchids with other members.
However, for plants to be entered in the prize selection process, they must comply with the following rules
• All plants must have been grown by the owners for at least 6 months. • Novice section is for those members who are new to growing orchids. A Novice will cease to be a Novice when they; o win a Red Ribbon at a WOS Show or o win the Plant Table Annual Prize.
This month, the plant table consisted of 38 orchids belonging to 9 members.

There was a Question & Answer Panel at our last meeting, and one of the questions asked was about the plastic mesh baskets Erhard makes for his orchids.
Erhard kindly provided us with a design plan on how to make them yourself, which is attached to this newsletter as a separate file. He has mentioned that the size of the mesh used depends on the size of the plant and its roots, and if it has pendulous flower spikes (eg Stanhopea). Another hint is that instead of wire for joining the edges, cable ties are much easier to use.

This information would be used to produce a short article for the Newsletter. I will provide a guide-line template for contributors.
