The House met at 10.00 am pursuant to adjournment. The Speaker took the Chair, read the prayer and acknowledged the traditional owners, thanking them for their custodianship of country.

3 ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES

Mr moved, pursuant to notice, That this House:

(1) Acknowledges the contribution made to New South Wales by those who have sought asylum, refugees, and other immigrants including those on 457 visas.

(2) Notes that seeking asylum is a human right and asylum seekers, refugees and other immigrants should be treated with respect and dignity.

(3) Commends the Government for its compassionate approach towards asylum seekers and refugees, including providing the most generous travel concessions in Australia.

4 SHOALHAVEN HOSPITAL

The order of the day was read for the resumption of the interrupted debate, on the motion of Mr , That this House:

(1) Congratulates the Government for its commitment of a second linear accelerator at Shoalhaven Hospital.

(2) Congratulates the Government for its commitment to an $8 million upgrade of the car park at Shoalhaven Hospital.

(3) Notes that the Opposition failed to match the current Government's commitment to upgrade the car park.

5 ALISON QUIRK YOUTH PARLIAMENT REPRESENTATIVE

Mr moved, pursuant to notice, That this House:

(1) Congratulates Moree Secondary College Captain Alison Quirk on her selection to represent the Northern Tablelands in the 2015 YMCA NSW Youth Parliament.

(2) Notes that Alison has recently returned home after a stint in Sydney at political boot camp with 159 other students from across the State, who are formulating bills that will be presented and debated in the Parliament in July.

(3) Wishes Alison a successful and enjoyable experience in the Youth Parliament as a representative and ambassador for rural young people.

6 PRINCES HIGHWAY UPGRADE

Mr Gareth Ward moved, pursuant to notice, That this House:

(1) Congratulates the Government for upgrading the Princes Highway at Gerringong, Berry and South Nowra.

(2) Notes the historic and record spending on roads in the Illawarra region.

7 LITERACY AND NUMERACY TEACHERS

Mr moved, pursuant to notice, That this House:

(1) Notes that in 2010 the then Opposition announced a commitment of 60 new literacy and numeracy teachers for the Illawarra.

(2) Notes that as of 1 May 2015 this commitment has not been met.

(3) Calls on the Government to explain when all of those teachers will be working in Illawarra schools.

Upon which Mr Ray Williams moved, That the motion be amended by leaving out all words after “That” with a view to inserting instead:

“this House:

(1) Notes the Government’s $261 million five year Literacy and Numeracy Action Plan which is based on the key recommendation of the Ministerial Advisory Group chaired by Dr Ken Boston, AO.

(2) Notes indications already suggest the plan is providing an evidence-based prescription for improvement in literacy and numeracy standards on behalf of children in New South Wales.

(3) Congratulates and thanks teachers in New South Wales for the great work they do in teaching literacy and numeracy.”
