MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE REGULAR SESSION 2009 By MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE REGULAR SESSION 2009 By: Senator(s) Blount, Butler, Carmichael, To: Rules Davis (1st), Davis (36th), Dearing, Fillingane, Jackson (11th), Ward, Montgomery SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 540 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2 MILLSAPS COLLEGE "MAJORS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND COACH OF THE YEAR MIKE 3 DUBOSE FOR WINNING THEIR THIRD CONSECUTIVE SOUTHERN COLLEGIATE 4 ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (SCAC) CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR ITS SPECTACULAR 5 UNDEFEATED 2008 SEASON. 6 WHEREAS, Oliver Galicki, Andres Wallace, Jordan Granville, 7 John Shivers and Adam Williams paved the way for a season-high 576 8 total yards and the 5th-ranked Millsaps College "Majors" football 9 team scored the most points on host Trinity (Texas) in the 10 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference era in a 56-27 rout of the 11 Tigers on Saturday, November 1, 2008, which clinched its third 12 consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. 13 Millsaps would take total control of the game in the second half, 14 scoring TDs on four of its five possessions while limiting the 15 Tigers to just 10 points to come away with the convincing, 16 29-point win; and 17 WHEREAS, Millsaps ended the year at 11-1, its most wins in 18 school history. A record total of 839 viewers were watching the 19 online webcast of the Regional Semi-final. Quarterback Joseph 20 became the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's career 21 passing leader with 9,295 yards, McCarty tied a Millsaps career 22 record with his 20th touchdown reception; and 23 WHEREAS, Millsaps College senior quarterback and All-American 24 hopeful Juan Joseph was named one of the 10 finalists for the 2008 25 Gagliardi Trophy announced on November 26, 2008. The Gagliardi 26 Trophy is one of the leading collegiate football awards and is 27 widely recognized as the premier individual award in Division III 28 football, honoring excellence in athletics, academics and S. C. R. No. 540 *SS01/R646* N1/2 09/SS01/R646 PAGE 1 29 community service; and 30 WHEREAS, after a season in which Millsaps ran roughshod 31 through the league with a perfect 10-0 regular season mark (7-0 in 32 conference) and managed an average margin victory of 31 points, 33 the Majors were awarded for their dominance with the announcement 34 of the 2008 All-SCAC Football team. In exclusive voting by the 35 head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, 36 Millsaps racked up on the major awards as quarterback Juan Joseph 37 was selected as the league's Offensive Player-of-the-Year for the 38 third consecutive season, freshman running back Shane Bowser was 39 named Co-Newcomer-of-the-Year, receiver/return specialist Michael 40 Galatas earned the league's Special Teams Player-of-the-Year award 41 and head coach Mike DuBose was named SCAC Coach-of-the-Year for 42 the second time; and 43 WHEREAS, Juan Joseph, a 6-0, 188-pound senior quarterback 44 from Edgard, Louisiana, is the first player in SCAC history to 45 earn the league's Offensive Player-of-the-Year award three times. 46 A three-time SCAC Player-of-the-Week during the season (giving him 47 9 awards for this career), Joseph has completed 270 of 403 passes 48 for 3,130 yards with 31 touchdowns against just six interceptions 49 through the first round of the NCAA playoffs. He was a two-time 50 D3football.com Team of the Week honoree and has five 300-yard+ 51 passing games, which included a school record of six TD passing 52 performance against Rhodes. His 2008 passing yardage total is the 53 third most in a single season in league history and his TD passing 54 total is tied for fourth. For his career, Joseph is the league's 55 all-time leader in total offense (9,467 yards) and is second in 56 passing yards (8,962) - just 46 yards from the SCAC record. His 57 86 career touchdown passes ranks third on the league's all-time 58 charts; and 59 WHEREAS, on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, in one of the biggest 60 upsets in the 13-year history of the Conerly Trophy, Juan Joseph 61 beat out two Southeastern Conference linemen to become the first S. C. R. No. 540 *SS01/R646* 09/SS01/R646 PAGE 2 62 Division III player to win the award. He's also the first 63 quarterback to claim the award since 2003, when Ole Miss' Eli 64 Manning won for the second time; and 65 WHEREAS, after guiding Millsaps to its third playoff bid in 66 school history and second in three years, Mike DuBose was selected 67 by his peers as SCAC Coach-of-the-Year. He also won the honor in 68 2006. The Majors ran the table in 2008, posting a perfect 10-0 69 regular season mark - the school's first unbeaten season since 70 1980 and first ever 10-win campaign. In three seasons, DuBose is 71 a 19-1 all-time in SCAC games; 26-6 overall. Millsaps is 72 currently riding a 13-game win streak, which ties a school record 73 for most consecutive wins and is the longest current streak in all 74 of Division III.
