Every year Russian museums visit more than 80 million visitors, 1/3 of who are visitors under 18 There are about 650 individual and institutional members in ICOM Russia. But St. Petersburg’s three centuries have matured its material authenticity, recognizable tableaux and unique urban narratives, chiefly the Petersburg Text. The three of these, intertwined in their formation and development, created a distinctive place-identity. The aura arising from this distinctiveness functioned as a marketable code not only for St. Petersburg’s heritage industry, but also for a future-oriented engagement with post-Soviet hypercapitalism. Reflecting on both up-to-date scholarship and the actual cityscapes themselves, my dissertation will focus on the imaginative landscapes in the historic center of St. -

Lomonosov Moscow State University [email protected] ORCID: 0000-0003-3342-8508 ABSTRACT This article is devoted to the description of the two mythologemes of Pushkin myth (PM). According to the first, the great Russian poet secretly loved one woman all his life and dedicated many unattributed poems to her. This is the mythologeme of Pushkin’s hidden love. The other side of the myth is based on the “Ushakova’s Album” (her personal notebook for her friends’ poetries), in which the poet joked down the names of all his beloveds (Don Juan List). On the basis of this document, the literary critic P. Guber and the “publisher” of Pushkin’s Secret Notes, M. Armalinsky, make ambiguous conclusions and give a new life to Pushkin myth in the 20-21st centuries. INTRODUCTION: THE STATE OF THE QUESTION The application of the concept “Pushkin myth” (PM) is very diverse, which sometimes leads to an unreasonable expansion of the meaning of the term. Like any myth (ancient or modern), the PM is a plot that develops from episodes- mythologemes. Andrei Bitov on “Russian Wealth” Cynthia Simmons, Boston College Great Russian thinkers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (Alexander Herzen, Mikhail Bakunin, Fedor Dostoevsky, Lev Tolstoy, and others) mused about the dilemmas of late imperial Russia. Some of them penned specific proposals as to what should be done—Herzen’s novel What Is to Be Done? (Chto delat’, 1863), Tolstoy’s philosophical tract of nearly the same title, So What Are We to Do? (Tak chto zhe nam delat’, 1886), and Lenin’s What Is to Be Done (Chto delat’) of 1902. In addition to listing the social ills that they desired to see eradicated, some social critics of the day identified as well what deserved to be protected—those aspects of Russian culture that characterized and enriched the nation. With the late-twentieth-century demise of the Soviet Union, these grand questions occupy the attention of great thinkers once again. Writers cum “public intellectuals” such as Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Andrei Bitov speak and write extensively on the Russia that they have inherited, about what has been lost (as well as jettisoned) over the last two centuries, and what has endured. As an emblem of these polemics, which pursued Russia’s essence and the abiding question of “What is to be done?”, we might consider the two incarnations of a journal entitled Russian Wealth (Russkoe bogatstvo; translated also as Russian Riches and Russian Treasures). It was first published from 1876 to 1918 (until the Bolshevik Revolution). It was then “reincarnated” in the post-Soviet period, from 1991 to 1994. -

RUSSIAN ANTI-LITERATURE Rolf Hellebust University of Nottingham The term anti-literature has a distinctly modern cachet. It was coined in 1935 by the English poet David Gascoyne, who used it to describe the maximalist avant-garde épatage of Dada and the Surrealists.1 A subtype, the anti-novel, comes to the fore in the latter half of the century with the appearance of the French nouveau roman in the 1950s and 60s. A search for literary analogues in twentieth-century Russia may fail to come up with any native Robbe- Grillet – yet the period over which Russians have been trying to write the novel to end all novel-writing has extended at least from Tolstoy‟s War and Peace (1869) to Andrei Bitov‟s Pushkin House (1978) and Sasha Sokolov‟s Palisandria (1985). No less than their Western counterparts from Cervantes to Joyce and beyond, these authors aim to exhaust the novel and/or create its ultimate representative by taking to an extreme its pre-existing tendencies: these include intertextuality and parody, fiction‟s encroachment upon non-fiction and upon historiography in particular, the sense of the novel as a genre minimally bound by literary conventions, and finally, the impression of exhaustiveness that comes from sheer length alone. To describe War and Peace as a work of anti-literature in the same breath as the postmodernist production of Bitov and Sokolov (not to mention Robbe-Grillet) may seem 1 2 anachronistic. Recall, though, Tolstoy‟s own comments on his book. Defending himself against anticipated criticism of his formal idiosyncrasies, the author of what is often considered the greatest novel ever written declares What is War and Peace? It is not a novel. -
