I am grateful for these brief notes based upon the lifting of restrictions.

Within the Church we believe that everyone is known and loved individually by God and that as many members within one body we are called to be responsible to and for one another, respecting the more vulnerable whose suffering is our suffering (1 Cor 12:12-27). The move to step 4 means we are being asked to take even more personal responsibility around coronavirus than when we were compelled to adhere to Government restrictions.

In every situation there is likely to be a range of feeling about risk, both to ourselves and to others, that will need to be accommodated by our churches in a way appropriate to each of them.

There are no restrictions on choirs and music groups, whether amateur or professional, or on congregational singing. There will no longer be restrictions on group sizes for attending communal worship.

Can we open as a visitor attraction? Yes

Can we sing and perform music in church? Yes, However, some activities can also increase the risk of catching or passing on coronavirus. This happens where people are doing activities which generate more particles as they breathe heavily, such as singing or raising their voices. The risk is greatest where these activities take place when people are in close contact with others indoors, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces. In these situations where there is a higher risk of catching or passing on the virus, we advise additional precautions should be considered e.g. by improving ventilation, using a larger space, reducing the number of participants, shortening the duration of activity and wearing face coverings.

I especially want to say a huge thank you to our Church Wardens who with those who Verge and Clean have kept our churches functioning. Their prayerful, practical support is a great asset to our villages.

God bless you,

Revd. Canon Tony Tucker

Daphne Cox sadly passed away recently and amongst her possessions was a photo album with pictures of Claypole, particularly school pupils over many years, and many newspaper cuttings. The family have kindly let me have the album for our Claypole History Resources and I will be using some of the images in future Newsletter articles.

Daphne’s first husband Mr Peter Scott was the much respected Headmaster of Claypole School from 1958. On appointment he was only 28 years old.

The house on the left of School Lane was the Headmaster’s house. Brunt’s Farm is top left. The current school site was the location for the Prefabs which were supposedly temporary homes but in fact lasted for many years, until they were demolished. The land was used to build the Chance to Share Hall, which later became the hall for the current Claypole School. The original plan was to build the school attached to the hall, but it wasn’t affordable at that time. Mr Brian Wooley of Back Lane led the Chance to Share Hall funding. Claypole School and Prefabs Another item in the album was a newspaper report with a picture of some parents proudly donating a black and white television to Claypole School. The article says that children at the school watched television during school hours Daphne Cox sadly passed away recently and amongst her possessions was a for the very first time. On the Monday 10 and 11 year old children watched an photo album with pictures of Claypole, particularly school pupils over many ITV programme on mathematics and on Tuesday the 9 and 10 year olds years, and many newspaper cuttings. The family have kindly let me have the watched a BBC education programme “People and Places”. Rynenburg and Mrs Hammond. The Parent TeacherAssociation raised the money for the television by holding whist drives and other activities. The Headmaster at the time was Mr Scott and his wife Daphne (later Cox) was Deputy Headteacher at the school.

RSPCA Medal for 10 year old Teresa Healey of Main Street.

Teresa was awarded the medal for carrying out a difficult and unusual rescue. On Bonfire Night a bat had become trapped in a window mesh 20 feet upat Claypole school. Completely unafraid,Teresa fetched and climbed a ladder and took five minutes to delicately remove the bat, which bit her duringthe process. The bat was taken home and fed for three days on a diet of sweetened milk, flies and damp bread before being released back into the wild.

Mrs Alice Moore was a teacher at Claypole school from 1905 until 1942. On her 98th birthday she presented pupils at the school with swimming trophies. The best girl swimmer went to Diane Braithwaite and best boy was Carl Smith. The best boy’s award was the Ocean Island Trophy gifted to the school by Mr and Mrs J Allen who now lived in the South Pacific. Mrs Moore was presented with a box of chocolates and a birthday card. Moore Close was named after Alice’s husband, who was the Headteacher at Claypole from 1905-1940. Mr Moore died in 1951 and had served in the army for 3 years in WorldWar I.
