The story follows the exploits of seven children as they are terrorized by the eponymous being, which exploits the fears and phobias of its victims to disguise itself while hunting its prey. The novel is told through narratives alternating between two periods, and it is largely told in the third person omniscient mode. It comes with the theme that eventually became king staples the power of memory, childhood trauma and its recurrent echoes in adulthood. In the climax of the novel the children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to battle once again the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers. The book reveals that one of Will Hanlon’s army friends (and the cook in the black spot) is Dick Halloran from The Shining. The book also contains a new afterword by Stephen King discussing his reason for writing this horror novel.     Rediscovering the Fantastic: a true story I was a little over six years old when I wrote my first piece of fiction. The headmaster of my primary school had us all sit down in assembly while he told us a story. I remember not liking the ending for some reason, and so when assembly was finished I went back to my classroom and wrote a different one. When my form teacher saw what I’d done she got all excited about it for some reason, and sent me down to show it to the headmaster. He must have been okay with it because he stuck a gold star into my exercise book and sent me on my way. I remember feeling bemused, because writing the story had been a private thing, something I’d done for myself, and yet here were all these people making a fuss of me. I couldn’t make it out. I guess this was my first lesson in some of the contradictions of being a writer. I wrote stories all the time after that. In the beginning they were mostly about mermaids. Then Doctor Who came into my life and it was all monsters. When I started to discover SF in my early teens I began filling my school exercise books with fifty-page epics about groups of friends who spend their summer holidays fending off alien invasions. For me at that time, writing was a completely natural activity, a kind of offshoot of reading that I never thought to question or analyse. I liked writing things down – in notebooks, journals, the crowded margins of my dog-eared copy of The Penguin Anthology of Science Fiction.

Five potential sites are under consideration, three in the UK and two in Holland. Although rumours of another bid surfaced shortly after Glasgow hosted its second worldcon in 2005, discussions moved up a gear at ConRunner in late June. The majority of those present favoured 2014, with limited support for 2015; locations are currently decided three years in advance. The team’s co-ordinator, Steve Cooper, told Critical Wave that one site, the NCSF Congress in Rotterdam, had already been eliminated, as it was felt to be too small. The remaining venues are Liverpool’s new £146m Arena & Conference Centre, the World Forum Den Haag, the ExCel in London’s Docklands, the RAI Amsterdam Congress Centre and the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre in Glasgow. Visits to the first four have already taken place, with the SECC tour scheduled for late November in order that a full report can be made to the main group before the end of the year. Cooper added: “The aim of this process is that, by Easter 2009, the group should be able to reduce the options to two (or possibly three) sites that are viable both financially and logistically. At LX, the 2009 Eastercon, a panel item has been arranged to allow for an in-person discussion.
