With a history dating back to 1893, the school offers academic programs to educate nurses from entry level practice through the doctorate - all with the mission of shaping the future of nursing through the power of education, discovery and collaboration. Overview of VCU and the School of Nursing Virginia Commonwealth University is an urban public research university located in downtown Richmond, Virginia with over 30,000 full-time and part-time students enrolled in 15 schools and colleges. VCU is designated as a research university with very high research activity and as a Community Engaged Institution by the Carnegie Foundation Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. VCU also has a National Institutes of Health- funded Clinical and Translational Science Award. VCU's support for research through its Office of Research and Innovation has increased by approximately 35 percent in the past 10 years. In FY17, sponsored programs awards at VCU totaled $275 million - an all-time high for the institution. VCU enjoys a close partnership with the VCU Health System, which includes the VCU Medical Center (a Level I trauma center with Magnet status), the Massey Cancer Center (a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center), Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, and Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, Virginia. VCU is one of only 20 tylerandco.com 610.558.6100 ADRSI, VCU School of Nursing academic medical centers in the country with a school in every health-related discipline, which provides the platform for a highly collaborative interdisciplinary research environment. The SON offers four degrees: bachelors, masters, PhD and doctor of nursing practice (DNP). The Master’s program is ranked No. 41 by U.S. News and World Report’s best graduate schools in the nation. In addition, VCU’s DNP program made the top 50 for the first time since it was launched three years ago, ranking No. 48. The baccalaureate, master's, post-master's certificate, and DNP programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The pre-licensure nursing program is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing. The SON enrolls an average of 850 students. The SON employs 50 full-time faculty members representing expert nurse clinicians, teachers, and scientists renowned for cutting-edge research designed to advance nursing knowledge in biobehavioral and quality science. The SON has been among leading nursing schools for National Institutes of Health research funding and has held two NINR-funded research centers. Faculty are also committed to community engagement through the provision of vital clinical services, health education, and research at several community clinics in Richmond’s public housing communities. A long-standing and robust collaboration exists between nurse leaders at VCU Health and the School of Nursing to support clinical education and research. SON Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation This well-resourced office develops and maintains systems that support the strategic directions of the SON and faculty in their programs of research and scholarship. Support services are offered through two functional units: 1) Research Administration Services; and 2) Research support services. Research Administration Services include a comprehensive range of services including pre- and post-award mentoring and grant management for faculty and students, regulatory and compliance assistance, coordination of research activities, database of research-related activities, access to research resources, and implementation of studies. Research support services include a full range of biostatistics, data management, and research laboratory services through the SON’s Biobehavioral Research Lab, a state-of the-art facility that supports innovative clinical and translational biomarker research. These resources were developed through the SONs Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research (CBCR). Established in the early 2000s with support from the National Institute of Nursing Research Center Grant (P20 NR008988, 2004-2009, McCain, PI; P30 NR011403, 2009-2014, Grap, PI) and from institutional and philanthropic funds, CBCR produced many of the currently sustained resources for the SON including the Biobehavioral Research Lab. CBCR contributes to the support of a robust program of innovative and nationally renowned biobehavioral and symptom research to develop precision science-driven interventions for a variety of patient populations, including critically ill and those with chronic conditions. See https://nursing.vcu.edu/research for more information. tylerandco.com 610.558.6100 ADRSI, VCU School of Nursing The Position The Associate Dean for Research, Scholarship, and Innovation (ADRSI) serves as the Chief Research Officer at the School of Nursing and provides leadership in strategic planning for research and scholarly activities. The ADRSI oversees and maintains effective school-wide systems of support for the research and scholarly work of faculty. A major role of the ADRSI includes collaborating with Department Chairpersons to facilitate the development of rigorous and innovative programs of faculty research and scholarship. The ADRSI serves as the formal point of contact for matters related to research and scholarly activities for the School with the University, the VCU Health System, and external organizations. The ADRSI reports directly to the Dean. The ADRSI is appointed by the Dean, based on a competitive application process. Key Responsibilities • Represents the School of Nursing within the university (including the VCU Research Development Advisory Council and the VCU Office of Sponsored Programs), health system, and with external constituents related to research and scholarship programs and as assigned by the Dean. • Provides leadership in strategic planning for achievement of the research/scholarly mission of the School consistent with the mission and strategic plan of the University. • Oversees school-wide systems, fiscal, physical, and human, that support faculty members in development of programs of research and scholarship (including pre-award, post-award, statistical support, data management, and the state of the art Biobehavioral Research Laboratory). • Manages the Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation, including development and supervision of personnel. • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to ensure that the doctoral program prepares the future generation of nurse scientists for successful careers in research and as stewards of the discipline. • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Practice and Community Engagement to support best practices in community-engaged research. • Collaborates with Department Chairs to mentor individual faculty members in development and implementation of their research/scholarship programs, as well as contributes to the development of mentorship skills among experienced research faculty. • Implements faculty development programs related to emerging science in the School’s research foci and that support faculty at various stages of their research/scholarly careers. • Manages development and submission of voluntary and mandatory reports on the research projects and activities of the School and its faculty for all internal and external reporting bodies. • Identifies opportunities for SON faculty participation in activities related to research/scholarship at local, regional, national, and international arenas. tylerandco.com 610.558.6100 ADRSI, VCU School of Nursing • Serves as the Co-Chair of the Research Evidence-Based Practice and Leadership Council at VCU Health System. With the support of the Virginia General Assembly and Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr., this proposal became a reality when these two institutions were brought together in 1968 to form Virginia Commonwealth University. In the fall of 2008, our university celebrated the 40th anniversary of the merger.
