With a history dating back to 1893, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Nursing offers academic programs to educate nurses from entry level practice through the doctorate - all with the mission of shaping the future of nursing through the power of education, discovery and collaboration.

VCU School of Nursing’s Master’s program is ranked No. 41 by U.S. News and World Report’s best graduate schools in the nation. In addition, VCU’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program made the top 50 for the first time since it was launched three years ago, ranking No. 48. VCU School of Nursing enrolls an average of 900 students and is located in a beautiful, state of the art facility, located on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus in downtown Richmond, Virginia. Their comprehensive health sciences environment includes a partnership with VCU Medical Center, a Level I trauma center with Magnet status. It also includes the Center for Bio Behavioral Research and a new Center for Quality and Safety.

Faculty members include both expert nurses who maintain their clinical practices and nurse scientists renowned for cutting-edge research designed to advance nursing knowledge. Their work has consistently ranked the VCU School of Nursing in the top tier of National Institutes of Health-funded nursing schools.

VCU’s SON community engagement is another reason why they are a top nursing school. Their faculty and students provide clinical services and health education at several community clinics in Richmond’s public housing communities.

The baccalaureate degree in nursing, master's degree in nursing, post-master's certificate program and the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the VCU School of Nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The pre-licensure nursing program is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

The VCU School of Nursing is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, holding several events throughout 2018.

Research & Scholarly Activity: The VCU School of Nursing’s Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation develops and maintains systems which support the strategic directions of the SON and support faculty in their programs of research and scholarship.

Current support services are offered through two functional units; research administration and research support services.

Research Administration Services include: • Ensuring that all university, state, and federal training and other regulatory requirements are met. • Providing pre-award grant preparation and submission services. • Facilitating effective post-award grant management processes.

• Supporting faculty members in the preparation and submission of research-related progress, regulatory, fiscal, and other reports. • Coordinating all research-related events. • Providing support to graduate and undergraduate nursing students interested in pursuing research and scholarship. • Maintaining a database of all research-related activities. • Assisting investigators in connecting with appropriate research-related resources. • Advising and supporting faculty members with Institutional Review Board applications and processes. • Facilitating development and implementation of research methodologies including recruitment/consent, retention, and data collection processes for a variety of clinical, biological, and other data.

The Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation houses the Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research, which supports a robust program of innovative and nationally renowned biobehavioral research. The Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research (CBCR) was established in the early 2000s and evolved to its present sustained status with support from Center Grants awarded by the National Institute of Nursing Research (P20 NR008988, 2004-2009, McCain, PI; P30 NR011403, 2009-2014, Grap, PI) and from institutional and philanthropic funds.

The CBCR has transformed the research program of the VCU School of Nursing by enabling its researchers to significantly advance biobehavioral science and symptom management in a variety of patient populations, including the critically ill and those with chronic conditions. The CBCR's vision for the future is that the SON will sustain and expand the CBCR's infrastructure and success in symptom and self-management science with a strong focus on developing precision science-driven behavioral interventions.

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Associate Dean of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation (ADRSI) serves as the Chief Research Officer at the School of Nursing and provides leadership in strategic planning for research and scholarly activities. The ADRSI oversees and maintains effective school-wide systems of support for the research and scholarly work of faculty. A major role of the ADRSI includes collaborating with the Department Chairpersons to facilitate the development of rigorous and innovative programs of faculty research and scholarship. The ADRSI serves as the formal point of contact for matters related to research and scholarly activities for the School with the University, the VCU Health System, and external organizations. The ADRSI is accountable to the Dean

Key responsibilities of this position include: • Represents the School of Nursing within the university (including the VCU Research Development Advisory Council and the VCU Office of Sponsored Programs), health system, and with external constituents related to research and scholarship programs and as assigned by the Dean. • Provides leadership in strategic planning for achievement of the research/scholarly mission of the School consistent with the mission and strategic plan of the University. • Oversees school-wide systems, fiscal, physical, and human, that support faculty members in development of programs of research and scholarship (including pre-award, post- award, statistical support, data management, and the state of the art Biobehavioral Research Laboratory). • Manages the Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation, including development and supervision of personnel. • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to ensure that the doctoral program prepares the future generation of nurse scientists for successful careers in research and as stewards of the discipline. • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Practice and Community Engagement to support best practices in community engaged research. • Collaborates with the Department Chairs to mentor individual faculty members in development and implementation of their programs of research/scholarship and also develop mentorship skills among experienced research faculty. • Implements faculty development programs related to emerging science in the School’s research foci and that support faculty at various stages of their research/scholarly careers. • Manages development and submission of voluntary and mandatory reports on the research projects and activities of the School and its faculty for all internal and external reporting bodies. • Identifies opportunities for SON faculty participation in activities related to research/scholarship at local, regional, national, and international arenas. • Serves as the Co-Chair of the Research Evidence-Based Practice and Leadership Council at VCU Health System. In this role the ADRSI facilitates collaborative support systems for clinician and faculty scientists to develop and implement programs of research within the VCU Health System. • Convenes the SON Research Council, which is a monthly meeting of SON scholars designed to provide timely updates on research operations, important research-related educational offerings, and a forum for discussing research issues.

THE CANDIDATE: Qualified candidates with a solid record of scholarly achievement and peer reviewed research funding may be appointed to a potential endowed chair position and a tenure track appointment.

Applicants must have or demonstrate the following qualifications: • Earned doctorate in nursing or related discipline. If PhD is in a related field, a master’s degree in nursing is highly preferred.

• Experience conducting research in the nursing discipline, with preference for experience in an academic health science setting. • Full-time senior faculty rank (Associate Professor or Professor), tenured. • Expertise in research methods and grant management. • Administrative experience at a senior level. • Significant record of scholarly achievement and history of extramural funding. • Experience on NIH study section is preferred.
