Many areas of the island, and especially those associated with the Kyrenia Mountains, are now quite well explored and subsequently many excellent walking and hiking tracks have been established over the last few years. For those still keen to explore and who enjoy ‘sniffing’ out new trails, there are still some areas, such as those around Yesilirmak in the foothills of the Troodos, that are still not that well explored but which are likely home to many more fantastic trails. -

Walking in Cyprus
WALKING IN CYPRUS 44 WALKS IN THE SOUTH AND THE NORTH 837 Walking In Cyprus.indd 1 19/07/2017 11:11 About the Author Nike and Jacint met many years ago on a long coach journey as they both travelled into the unknown to build a new life in a different country. It wasn’t long before they became inseparable. Travelling quickly emerged as their favourite activity: they had their first walking holiday in Madeira in 2008 and now wherever they go they try to find the best trails. When they first visited Cyprus they were mesmerised by the diverse scenery, but dis- covered that information about trails was difficult to find and walking maps were not available. Having collected the best routes, they want to share their passion for walking on this fascinating island with others. Nike went to journalism school and Jacint is a keen photographer. In 2016 they moved from London to Surrey where they can enjoy the coun- tryside and hills. 837 Walking In Cyprus.indd 2 19/07/2017 11:11 WALKING IN CYPRUS 44 WALKS IN THE SOUTH AND THE NORTH by Nike Werstroh and Jacint Mig JUNIPER HOUSE, MURLEY MOSS, OXENHOLME ROAD, KENDAL, CUMBRIA LA9 7RL www.cicerone.co.uk 837 Walking In Cyprus.indd 3 19/07/2017 11:11 © Nike Werstroh and Jacint Mig 2017 First edition 2017 ISBN: 978 1 85284 837 8 Printed by KHL Printing, Singapore A catalogue record for this book is available from the British Library. The transfer takes approximately 1.5 hrs and includes crossing the border to North Cyprus. Land Only clients should aim to arrive at the hotel this afternoon. In the evening our guide will hold a short meeting to discuss the plan for the following day, to give advice on the local area and to answer any questions. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella or similarComfortable Hotel Day 2 Transfer to Catalkoy; walk to Bellapais and visit the monastery; afternoon Kyrenia Castle visit. After the Welcome Briefing, we will have a short 20 minute transfer to Bellapais village and the beautiful 12th century Bellapais Abbey, set in the mountains to the south. There will be some free time to explore the beautiful village and the abbey before starting our short walk to Cattalkoy village where we get the transfer back to Kyrenia. The walk today is mainly along an old dirt track; it is fairly undulating, with views out towards the coast along the way. Kyrenia is a pretty harbour town and a great base from which to explore North Cyprus. Archaeological excavations show the area was first settled as far back as the 10th century BC, and today historic buildings and winding lanes offer a glimpse of the past, sitting side by side with more modern additions. -

Network Analysis of Crusader Fortifications and Settlements in the Kyrenia
Defend Your Coast: Network Analysis of Crusader Fortifications and Settlements in the Kyrenia Region of Cyprus By Tyler Martin Caldwell March 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. David Stewart Major Department: Program in Maritime Studies, Department of History The Mediterranean island of Cyprus is situated at the crossroads of the Near East and the Aegean Civilizations. During the Middle Ages, Cyprus experienced raids that would devastate the coastal landscape. Coastal towns and villages were destroyed, and many of them never rebuilt. Fortifications were constructed to defend the coastline from raiders and potential invaders. Scholars believe that during times of heavy raiding coastal settlements are abandoned in favor of inland settlements. This theory has not been tested using Geographic Information System (GIS). This study used GIS to test the area of influence raiders could exert inland during a raid. Based on past research the extent of influence was determined to be 3000 m inland. The Network Analyst tool was used to determine the shortest routes raiders and defenders took to reach undefended villages and churches. The time needed for defenders and attackers to reach sites was determined using a hiking calculator. Based on the results of the test the majority of sites are situated outside the range of raiders influence.
