1 8002 8001 8003 Lot 8001 1725 (Aug. 14) EL from Larnaca written in Italian, addressed to Nicolo Cavogiani in Venice, EL 170 € with endorsement with the Captain’s name of the ship that carried it. Lot 8002 Prepaid EL from Limassol, Cyprus, to Piraeus, Greece, dated 25 Aug. 1862, canc. Austrian EL 2500 € two-line “LARNACA / 8 SEPT.” and “FRANCA” both in black, arr. “ΠΕΙΡΑIΕΥΣ (2) / 31 ΑΥΓ. 62”. On arrival, marked with manuscr. large “X” (fee paid from Cyprus to Greece) on front and “20” (lepta - inland fee) on front and reverse, all in red crayon. Fee collected & affixed 20l. blue (Hellas 19b - 3 margins), appropriate canc. lozenge dotted “2”. Extremely rare. Lot 8003 QV diplomatic document sent by the british minister of exterior to the first Cyprus com- DOC 850 € misionaer Wolseley, just one month after receving his office at Larnaca Tuzla. Only one recorded to date. 2 8004 8005 Lot 8004 QV 1 Cover adressed to Najor W.H.Ross in Larnaca serving in the 26th native Indian C 6500 € regiment, endored “VIA BRINDISI”, fr. with 2 1/2d. British stamp, tied by manuscript “STAMPED” and “LITTLEHAMPTON AU.9.78”, also endorsed in pencil on reverse “REPLY TO MINE SENT FROM MALTA” and “LARNACA*16.8.1878”. Indian forces stationed in Larnaca for six weeks following the ceding of the island by Turks to British on the 8th of July 1878. One recorded to date. Soldier’s cover to England, headed “From No.833 Corporal J. Bolton 7/2 R.A. C 7300 € CYPRUS” and countersigned, franked at the concession rate of 1 GB penny red, plate 198, stamp cancelled by “942” numeral addressed to Herdfordshire, England (arr. on back). This is the FIRST RECORDED COVER from Cyprus and the ONLY RECORDED SOL- DIER’S COVER from there. Lot 8007 CYPRUS newspaper, dated 7 November 1878 fr. with 1d. british stamp used in Cyprus PRESS 8200 € (plate 179), canc. “942”, addressed to Birmingham. Foreign newpaper rate of one penny if it didn’t exceed four ounces. Cover was underpaid and taxed upon arrival at Larnaca post office. Normal rate for foreign destinations was 2 1/2d. per half ounce. Only one recorded to date. Cover to London, England, bearing 2 1/2 penny rose & pair 1 penny red, can- C 2500 € celled by “942” numeral cancellation, paying the normal rate plus the late fee posting of two penny. Kykko Monastery was the first side of the military and civil headquarters offices under british occupation. Cover was handstamped by Larnaca, head quarter-camp cds “16.5.1882” on arrival.
