June 2019 Issue
January to June 2019 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE PHILIPPINES IN NEW YORK 556 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10036 • Telephone: 212-764-1330 • Website: www.newyorkpcg.org • Email: [email protected] • Visit us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PHLinNY/ Message on the Occasion of 121st Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence His Excellency Rodrigo Roa Duterte, President of the Philippines I am one with the Filipino people in commemorating the Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence. A hundred and twenty-one years has passed since our forefathers bound their fates, their lives and their fortunes to proclaim the independence of the Filipino people. It was the most significant event in our country’s history. Not only did we put an end to more than three centuries of subservience but we also resolved to determine the course of our own destiny as a nation. But the freedom we achieved back then was not without cost. The tree of liberty blossomed on these lands because it was nourished by the sweat and blood or our patriots, heroes and martyrs. Let us commit ourselves to ensure that their sacrifices have not been in vain and that their dream of a truly independent Philippines - whose people live freely in a secure, stable and prosperous society - will be achieved within our lifetimes. May we have a solemn and meaningful observance. This is good for 60 days,” Abella added. Duterte will be leaving Moscow at around 12 midnight, cancelling his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as a result of this new devel- opment. “They understand that the presence of the President is essential in the Philippines. UP Film Institute Filmography of Filipino Films 2003 Introduced by Lucenio Martin L. Lauzon Compiled by Virginia D. Cuyugan and Lucenio Martin L. Lauzon with assistance from Pol del Mundo of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Ana Fajardo of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) Edwin Joaquin of the MOWELFUND Film Institute The Filipino film celebrates this year its 85th anniversary but its activities and achievements through the years still need to be documented and assessed fully and systematically. Today, the country is still wanting not only in the capability to preserve its film heritage but also in the determined and sustained efforts to collect and preserve existing data on Filipino film for posterity. It does not help that the conservation of Filipino heritage, taxing and tedious as it is already, is appreciated by only a few individuals even within the industry. As an institution dedicated to the study of films, the UP Film Institute (UPFI) shall try to help in the task of gathering, classifying and disseminating data on the Filipino film. As part of its commitment to the public, the UPFI shall make these data available to everyone through the publication of a systematic and comprehensive listing of Filipino films, beginning with those produced in 2003. This year is most apropos as it was also in 2003 that the UPFI was formally established by virtue of the UP Board of Regents resolution. The UPFI realizes that such filmographies are indispensable for anyone who wants to gain an overview of the film landscape in the country and to make necessary, informed and authoritative observations on the state of the Filipino film industry. -
