Selina Kyle also got a fresh backstory detailing her journey to becoming Catwoman. In the new iteration of Selinaʼs story, she was a sex worker who had bonded with and strove to protect other women. This makes Selina one of the most prominent comic characters with a canonical history of sex work. Perhaps more importantly, she generally isnʼt criminalized for it, which is a huge deal. Over time, she goes to some effort to reinvent herself as an elegant cat thief and antihero, yet she is never so far removed from her old life that she forgets it. WORKING THE MARGINS: WOMEN IN THE COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY by WESLEY CHENAULT Under the Direction of Marian Meyers ABSTRACT Women have been involved in the writing, illustrating, and production of comic books at almost every step of the genre’s development. The years between the late 1960s and the late 1990s were tumultuous for the comic book industry. At the societal level, these years were saturated with changes that challenged normative ideas of sex roles and gender. The goal of this study is two-fold: it documents the specific contributions to the comic book industry made by the women interviewed, and it addresses research questions that focus on gender, change, and comic books.

By utilizing moderately scheduled, in- depth interviews with women working in the comic book industry during this period, this study explores their experiences and treatment while working in an insular, male- dominated field.

Per le case editrici minori citiamo la sfortunata Abadazad, The Stardust Kid, Hero Squared e The Life And Times Of Savior 28. Difficile poi dimenticare i progetti più personali dell'autore come l'evocativo Moonshadow, Blood: A Tale, Mercy, Seekers Into The Mystery e l'autobiografico Brooklyn Dreams.

  • Wonder Woman Unbound
COMICS/LITERARY CRITICISM/POPULAR CULTURE WONDER WOMAN UNBOUND “I’ve never seen more information about Wonder Woman than in Wonder Woman Unbound. Tim Hanley tells us everything we’ve never asked about Wonder Woman because it simply never occurred to us: from her mythic Golden Age origins through her dismal Silver Age years as a lovesick romance comic character, and worse yet, when she lost her costume and powers in the late 1960s. Our favorite Amazon’s saga be- comes upbeat again with the 1970s advent of Gloria Steinem and Ms. magazine, and Lynda Carter’s unforgettable portrayal of her on television. And it’s all told with a dollop of humor!” —Trina Robbins, author of Pretty in Ink: North American Women Cartoonists, 1896–2013 ith her golden lasso and her bullet-deflecting bracelets, WWonder Woman is a beloved icon of female strength in a world of male superheroes. But this close look at her history por- trays a complicated heroine who is more than just a female Super- man. When they debuted in the 1940s, Wonder Woman comics advocated female superiority and the benefits of matriarchy; her adventures were also colored by bondage imagery and hidden les- bian leanings. In the decades that followed, Wonder Woman fell backward as American women began to step forward. Ultimate- ly, Wonder Woman became a feminist symbol in the 1970s, and the curious details of her past were quickly forgotten. Exploring this lost history adds new dimensions to the world’s most beloved female character, and Wonder Woman Unbound delves into her comic book and its spin-offs as well as the motivations of her cre- ators to showcase the peculiar journey of a twentieth-century icon.

  • Representations of Hiv/Aids in Popular American Comic Books, 1981- 1996
REPRESENTATIONS OF HIV/AIDS IN POPULAR AMERICAN COMIC BOOKS, 1981- 1996 William Richard Avila A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2021 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Michael Decker Graduate Faculty Representative William Albertini Timothy Messer-Kruse © 2021 William Richard Avila All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeffery Brown, Advisor From 1981-1996, the United States experienced an epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) that held profound implications for issues ranging from civil rights, public education, and sexual mores, to government accountability, public health, and expressions of heterosexism. Popular comic books that broached the subject of HIV/AIDS during the U.S. epidemic elucidate how America’s discourse on the disease evolved in an era when elected officials, religious leaders, legal professionals, medical specialists, and average citizens all struggled to negotiate their way through a period of national crisis. The manner whereby comic book authors, illustrators, and publishers engaged the topic of HIV/AIDS changed over time but, because comic books are an item of popular culture primarily produced for a heterosexual male audience, such changes habitually mirrored the evolution of the nation’s mainstream, heteronormative debates regarding the epidemic and its sociocultural and political implications. Through studying depictions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in popular comic books, alterations in the heterocentric, national discourse emerge revealing how homophobic dismissals of the “gay plague” in the early 1980s gave way to heterosexual panic in the mid-1980s, followed by the epidemic’s reinterpretation as a national tragedy in the late-1980s.
