222 Milan, October 11th-November 3rd 1816 Milan October 11th-November 3rd 1816 Edited from B.L.Add.Mss. 56537 Their twenty-three days in Milan are formative for Byron and Hobhouse in a number of ways. Firstly, they meet nearly every man of literary note in North Italy – exceptions being the absent Ugo Foscolo, and Alessandro Manzoni; secondly, they find themselves – Hobhouse especially – taken seriously as political writers in a way to which they’re unused; thirdly, they come to know at first hand what it’s like for intellectuals to live under a whole-heartedly totalitarian regime, as opposed to a half-hearted one of the kind they know in England. Byron’s interest in the Italian struggle for freedom, expressed the following year in Childe Harold IV, and in his Carbonari activities at Ravenna in the years following, surely has its roots in these three weeks. Hobhouse’s admiration for the classical learning displayed by common Italian people at puppet-shows is offset by what he learns about their capacity to be led into mindless mob violence (see October 26 for both these things) and help lay the foundations of his future qualified Westminster radicalism. His need above all is to work out how Italy’s freedom came to be mislaid for her at the Congress of Vienna. The description, on October 25, of the evening spent watching the improvvisatore Sgricci, is one of his droll masterpieces: but Stendhal’s (Henri Beyle’s) anecdotes, on October 23 and 28, of the Russian campaign and the retreat from Moscow, have some memorable details too. -

Gdbrielli portrait ofNapoleon, executed by Vigneucc, and here presented as a frontispiece. This portrait was emphatically declared by the relatives of the Corsican—including the Emperor's mother, his sisters, and his uncle, Cardinal Fesch—to have been the only one which bore anything like a truthful resemblance to their august kinsman. Prince Gabrielli, its original owner, and a distinguished contemporary and visitor of Napoleon, attached great value to the work on this account. As will be seen, it bears small resemblance to accepted portraits of the Emperor. The majority of the artists who have transmitted to us the traditional face of the Conqueror—ascetic, severe and somewhat scowling—sought, it would seem, to flatter Napoleon, regarding whose early Classical obsession they were fully informed, by giving to portraits of their illustrious sitter those attributes of feature and expression with which sculptors represent Romans of the heroic age. The portrait by Vigneux datesfrom 1807, ivhen Napoleon had well outgrown his worship of Antiquity. Genius, we may be certain, in any case, has no specific facial type. H. G. The judges composing the Tribunal which condemned Moreau were not all like Thuriot and Hemart. History has recorded an honourable contrast to the general meanness of the period in the reply given by M. Clavier, when urged by Hemart to vote for the condemnation of Moreau. "Ah, Monsieur, if we condemn him, how shall we be able to acquit ourselves?" I have, besides, the best reason for asserting that the judges were tampered with, from, a circumstance which occurred to myself. Bonaparte knew that I was intimately connected with M. Desmaisons, one of the members of the Tribunal, and brother in-law to Corvisart; he also knew that Desmaisons was inclined to believe in Moreau's innocence, and favourable to his acquittal. During the progress of the trial Corvisart arrived at my house one morning at a very early hour, in a state of such evident embarrassment that, before he had time to utter a word, I said to him, "What is the matter? Have you heard any bad news?" "No," replied Corvisart, "but I came by the Emperor's order. -

EN Spitzmaus Mummy in a Coffin and other Treasures WES ANDERSON & JUMAN MALOUF THE EXHIBITION At the invitation of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the film- maker Wes Anderson and his partner, writer and illustrator Juman Malouf, have spent two years combing through the 1400 museum’s historical collections. More than 400 remarkable objects are presented, many of which come directly from the museum’s storage rooms and have never before been shown in public. Among them are Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities, Old Master paintings, selections from the Kunstkammer and the Imperial Treasury, items from the Imperial Armoury, Coin Collection, and Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, as well as pieces from the Theatermuseum, the Weltmuseum, the Imperial Carriage Museum, and Schloss Ambras Innsbruck. A handful of special guests from the Natural History Museum have also found a place in the exhibition. The gathering and arrangement of these treasures – from the earliest, a necklace of ceramic beads strung together in Ancient Egypt, to the most recent, a wooden monkey carved in Indonesia almost 5,000 years later – suggest the spectacular breadth, depth, history, and complexity of the Kunsthistor- isches Museum’s collections. THE CURATORS Wes Anderson was born in Houston, Texas. His films include The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Grand Budapest Hotel. His latest film, Isle of Dogs, came out in 2018. Juman Malouf was born in Beirut, Lebanon and grew up in London. She has designed and illustrated for theatre, film, and fashion in the US and Europe. Her first novel, The Trilogy of Two, was published in 2015. -
