Chimps, Obama and Racial Stereotype We are decidedly not in a ‘post-racial’ America, whatever that may look like; indeed, many have been made more uneasy by the election of a black president and the accompanying euphoria, evoking a concomitant racial backlash in the form of allegedly satirical visual imagery. Such imagery attempts to dispel anxieties about race and ‘blackness’ by reifying the old racial stereotypes that suggest African Americans are really culturally and intellectually inferior and therefore not to be feared, that the threat of blackness can be neutralized or subverted through caricature and mockery. When the perpetrators and promulgators of such imagery are caught in the light of national media and accused of racial bias, whether blatant or implied, they always resort to the same ideological escape hatch: it was only ‘a joke’. -

The social-emotional screener for 4th graders was completed by the students and their teachers and parents. Once again, students scored themselves as more anxious and stressed than their parents and teachers thought. Students with scores that might warrant follow up, however, were not really surprising. 2. The Scott County Catholic elementary school counselors sponsored an evening on Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. JFK typically works with the families of about 2-4 students per year who have discussed harming themselves. 3. We worked with the Health Department regarding students who were exposed to bed bugs in their home or while traveling. According to Orkin, the Quad Cities has moved into the top 50 cities with bed bug infestations. Cedar Rapids is ranked in the mid-30s. Visional Leadership: 1. Underwood New Music Readings American Composers Orchestra PARTICIPATING COMPOSERS Andy Akiho Andy Akiho is a contemporary composer whose interests run from steel pan to traditional classical music. Recent engagements include commissioned premieres by the New York Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble ACJW, a performance with the LA Philharmonic, and three shows at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC featuring original works. His rhythmic compositions continue to increase in recognition with recent awards including the 2014-15 Luciano Berio Rome Prize, a 2012 Chamber Music America Grant with Sybarite5, the 2011 Finale & ensemble eighth blackbird National Composition Competition Grand Prize, the 2012 Carlsbad Composer Competition Commission for Calder Quartet, the 2011 Woods Chandler Memorial Prize (Yale School of Music), a 2011 Music Alumni Award (YSM), the 2010 Horatio Parker Award (YSM), three ASCAP Plus Awards, an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award, and a 2008 Brian M. Israel Prize. His compositions have been featured on PBS’s “News Hour with Jim Lehrer” and by organizations such as Bang on a Can, American Composers Forum, and The Society for New Music. A graduate of the University of South Carolina (BM, performance), the Manhattan School of Music (MM, contemporary performance), and the Yale School of Music (MM, composition), Akiho is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Princeton University. In addition to attending the 2013 International Heidelberger Frühling, the 2011 Aspen Summer Music Festival, and the 2008 Bang on a Can Summer Festival as a composition fellow, Akiho was the composer in residence for the 2013 Chamber Music Northwest Festival and the 2012 Silicon Valley Music Festival. -

Unbecoming Adults: Adolescence and the Technologies of Difference in Post-1960s US Ethnic Literature and Culture DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By James K. Harris 2017 Abstract Adolescence has always been a cultural construction. The designation of a separate space apart from the presumed innocence of childhood and the myths of autonomy and responsibility that come to define adulthood is a surprisingly modern phenomenon. As such, adolescence bears the traces of the ideologies of race, gender, sexuality, and nation that attend so much of the period that calls itself “modernity.” My dissertation asks how writers and artists of color imagine themselves into the archive of coming of age narratives in post-1960s US literature and culture. In thinking about the importance of identity in the period following the advent of nominal civil rights, I offer the “long(er) civil rights movement” as a way of resisting the move to periodize the struggles through which difference has historically accrued meaning in the US nation- state. Each chapter centers around a “technology,” the academy, the body, the entertainment industry, and the internet, which is essential to the formation of adolescent identity in the post-war era, alongside a key term in the lexicon of American culture that accrues added meanings when filtered through the experience of difference.
