How does Trief work? 1. The Brett Trief Kerb has been designed and proven to work in three ways to prevent vehicles leaving the carriageway: 1. The Trief Kerb is designed to present a clear visual signal to road users that prevents vehicles trying to leave the carriageway, its height also discourages pedestrians from crossing the highway. The result is that the separate streams of road users are effectively segregated which is a key contributor to enhancing road safety. 2. The Trief Kerb should be installed with a 25mm upstand from the highway surface leading onto an inclined . This is essential 2. Paving Haunching Toe to give road users an initial physical warning that their vehicle is 25 min Road leaving the carriageway and that they need to take action to bring level their vehicle back onto the carriageway. The inclined shoulder will help the driver bring the vehicle back on to the carriageway. 3. Finally, the Trief Kerb is designed to capture the sidewall bulge of 200 a vehicle tyre within its concave section thereby containing the vehicle within the highway boundary. 230 610 Taken together, these three steps have been proven to 3. contribute to British road safety for almost 50 years by providing a reliable, passive safety feature for use on our highways.

27 BRETT LANDSCAPING Commercial Support 0845 60 80 579 www.brett.co.uk/landscaping BRETT PERMEABLE PAVING PERMEABLE PAVING PRODUCTS FOR SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE SYTEMS (SUDS)

Sustainability is today a major factor within the construction industry, influenced by both planning guidance and legislation. In most cases, we can see that the key drivers behind this change are the conservation and management of two of our most precious resources – energy and water.

PERMEABLE PAVEMENT PAVING BENEFITS Runoff control Conventional paving systems are designed to simply shed water from their surface, whereas permeable paving allows the water to pass between each block and into the underlying sub-base, where it can be stored, channelled or slowly released. This release can be into the ground, passed on to a further stage of SUDS management or passed into the drainage system, but it is the controlled passage of water that is important. Good design enables permeable paving systems to reduce first flush, control peak rates and to attenuate total volume and frequency of run off by employing the principle of source control.

Pollution control The second key benefit of permeable paving is its ability to reduce pollutants, again at or close to source. Pollutants can be retained on the surface of the paving (especially where there is little or no fall), before being carried through to bedding and sub-base areas where they can be trapped and degraded over time. CIRIA*, the leading body in the research for SUDS, states that 60-95% of suspended solids and 70-90% of hydrocarbons can be removed by permeable paving. This often means that not only is an oil interceptor not required, but that water leaving the site is of a higher quality due to the efficiency of permeable paving systems at Control and Improve trapping and removing a wide range of pollutants. minimise water quantity quality Space efficiency Permeable pavements are a very space-efficient solution and ideal SUDS for high density housing and construction projects. As well as the above, permeable pavements offer: • Stand-alone solutions • Integration into management train Enhance • Optimum use of space amenity • Spare hydraulic capacity and wildlife • Potential to mix permeable and impermeable surfaces to optimise design

*Construction Industry Research and Information Association The best outcomes in SUDS design

28 As a long established manufacturer and supplier to the built environment, Brett recognises its responsibility to develop, promote and support products, including permeable paving, which can be used within SUDS design or as a stand-alone SUDS solution. These must be capable of seamless integration into all forms of the hard landscaped environment to enhance water quality, minimise flood risk and improve the management of our most valuable natural resource - water. The effective use of SUDS can therefore help to mitigate the impact of the more extreme weather events that we are seeing as a result of changing climate patterns and of our ever increasing demands on land usage.

Permeable pavements must be designed to deliver two objectives: 1. Supporting the planned traffic loading 2. Managing surface water effectively Two sets of calculations are therefore required when designing permeable pavements.

Structural design Hydraulic design G Assessment of traffic loading pre and post-construction G Assessment of sub-grade permeability G Assessment of sub-grade California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value G Selection of System A, B or C dependent upon sub-grade G Determination of sub-base thickness permeability, existing or ground pollution (especially on brownfield site developments), water table levels and proximity to Source G A temporary dense bitumen (DBM) layer can be used Protection Zones during site construction to prevent damage to the sub-base. G Determine design return period and rainfall data. The return Prior to commencing construction of the block layer, the DBM period is an event occurring on average once over a defined should be cored or punched with 75mm holes on a 750mm period, typically this is 1 year in 30, 1 year in 100 or 1 year in orthogonal grid. 100 plus 20% However, this method may reduce the storage capacity of the G Allow for additional drainage for adjacent areas which can include pavement and require a deeper sub-base to compensate. drainage from roofs. As a guide, a ratio of impermeable to permeable paving should be approximately 2:1 G Determine sub-base thickness required for water storage. 32 CASE STUDY BRETT PAVING IS SPECIFIED FOR THE UK’S LARGEST PERMEABLE PAVING SCHEME

Background Because of the benefits of permeable paving there was no need for The Sixfields development sits on the bank of the River Nene and is catch pits or oil interceptors on the site, as any hydrocarbons would part of Northampton Brownfield Initiative - a mixed urban be broken down naturally within the permeable pavement regeneration containing new housing, a rugby club, football pitch construction layers. This helped to reduce the overall project cost to and large car parks, as well as a nature reserve. the client as well as maximise the available space. This location boasts the UK's largest permeable concrete block This site can therefore be seen to have met all the criteria of a paving scheme, covering 52,000m² and was constructed using SUDS project in terms of attenuating water run off from the site, Brett's Omega Flow permeable paving to provide a flooding and improving the quality of water leaving the site and enhancing the drainage solution on this environmentally sensitive site adjacent to amenity of the surrounding area. the River Nene floodplain.

Sixfields had been derelict since the 1970’s when it was used as a landfill site after previous use for gravel extraction. The site also encompassed a sensitive nature reserve containing a unique habitat for wildlife. The old landfill site was first sealed off with a clay capping layer half a metre thick. This was then compacted using high-energy ground compaction techniques in order to minimise future settlement. The use of Omega Flow block paving was specifically chosen to accommodate any future differential settlement. Northampton Borough Council specified traditional asphalt designs and conventional drainage for roads linking car parks on the development. Culverts were constructed under these roads and discharged via interceptors at controlled outfalls. Storm conditions still allowed first flush contaminants to be discharged. A concrete block permeable paving SUDS solution was sought for the construction of the two large car parks.

The solution Brett Landscaping advised the client on the advantages of a sustainable drainage solution: Omega Flow. The two main car parks were constructed of 19,000m² and 16,000m² respectively of Omega Flow permeable paving. This would allow rainwater to be attenuated and released at a constant rate through five outfalls into a brook. Finally, 17,000 m 2 of roadway linking the car parks was also constructed using Omega Flow.

An increasing number of Brett block paving products can be palletised for machine lay. Brett Landscaping has worked to ensure that cluster sizes are optimised according to block dimensions to maximise laying efficiency. Using machine lay to install concrete block paving offers a number of advantages during the installation process, in particular, laying speeds are significantly increased whilst the pre-set cluster patterns provide excellent levels of consistency, this being particularly relevant on larger sites.
