Every yea:r one is moved by the promi se of new and vital life in this Spring and Easter season. I send you alJ my warm Easter greetings, and I hope you will like the seasonable Teddy Tail pictures which a C.D. reader sent to me. Like 1LheSpring season, our ever-resilient C.D. constantly renews itself. As I have so often said before, there is no shortage of interesting contributions , and new facts and comments are constantly coming up about the old books and papers which we so much relish. Happily too I am now receiving more articles on Sexton Blake and on E.S.. Brooks than in the past, and of course the Hamiltonian section of the C.D. remains vigorous, so that a good balance of articles can be published . It would be good to receive more items on the D.C. Thomson papers: whenever we are able to print one, I receive letters asking for more. There is also a strongly growing interest in the girls' papers. I look forward to a brimming-ov er ma.iJ-bag of contributions! Hmppy reading - and writing. MARY CADOGAN ************************************************************** 3 ************************************************************** A GREYFRIARS STALWART by Ted Baldock Mr Prout stood staring after him, purple with indignation. It was not easy for him to believe his portly ears. He , Prout, master of the Fifth-form had been told to mind his own business , by the master of a junior form. Prout did not know how often other members of the staff had been tempted to tell him that very thing. Quelch , at long last, had fallen to the temptation , that was all. But to Prout it really seemed that it was time for the skies to fall. F. Richards. Banishing of Billy Bunter. PauJ Pontifex Prout, M.A., master of the Fifth-form at Greyfriars school. Disciplinarian extraordinary. One-time big game hunter (according to unimpeachable authority - himself). Epitome of rotundity and pomposity. To some a figure of fun, to many more a bore of the first water - brutum fa/men - but to the greater number of masters and boys at the school a decent, well meaning old boy. Rather given to the shooting of 'tall staries' perhaps. but at bonom a stalwart, dependable champion not only of his own boys in the Fifth form, but also of the traditions of the school at Large. A gentleman mellowed by long experience of endeavouring to direct boys in the right direction. Of impaning crumbs of knowledge to receptive minds (a pleasure this) and unreceptive ones (a tedious task). Expert in the practice of observing the changing shades of character in fellows as they pass through his hands and rub shoulders with a 4 wide spectrum of 'types ' in the form-room and on the playing field. With a sure ·feel' of the preci se moment to encourage or chide. or, in tbe case of fellows of Horace Coker 's calibre, when to cry halt and, if need be, administer corporal punishment. When to deflate. and wben, and to what degree, to praise. Mr Prout, in common with his colleagues, has to be - as indeed he is - a master of all the arts of discriminati on and tact, and possessed of Job-like patience (especially i.nd ealing \\dth Coke,r). lf ever a master at a public school had the great misfortune of having an albatross firmly affixed round his neck- that gentleman's name is Paul Pontifex Prout. In his yo•un,gerday s. so it is alleged, chiefly by Mr Prout himself, he was entitled to the sobriquet of ·Mighty Hunter' and cunning tracker, having hunted ' big game' in appropriate parts of the 1globe. Tigers in the jungles of Bengal, Jaguar in the upper reaches of the mjghty Amazon river, great apes in the remote recesses of the African Congo. Prout, however , had a distinct penchant for U1e Canadian Rockies, those mountains where the intrepid seek.er can find the grizzly bear. Mr Prout is only too willing, given the opportunity , of expounding to an intenninabl.e length on such encounters. In the now far distant days of his youth it would seem that nothing, .however feroc ious, in the animal kingdom was safe from the attentions of the mighty hunter Prout. • What Happens in Vegas
Chapter 1: What Happens in Vegas Thirteen startled Las Vegas shoppers halted when Ashley and Danny Dillon came waltzing across the marble floor of Soignee: a Boutique. Danny, muscular and golden-haired at 46, still moved with the agility of a tennis coach. Ashley, tanned and blonded by a month in a thong bikini, mirrored her father’s steps as if they’d rehearsed. The Dress—a Justina Malo confection in blue-green silk— clung when they clung, and billowed when they twirled. Gamblers paused on their way to the casino. Tourists clapped and held up cell phones. They Tweeted, e-mailed, posted on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Of the 3,437 people who would eventually watch this ad hoc floor show, not one linked it to the near-disaster two nights ago at the Bellagio pool. Who'd recognize the dazzling girl in swirling chiffon as the limp body that had been dragged out of the water, strapped to a stretcher, and rushed away in an ambulance? Who'd recognize her partner as the frantic father who’d sneaked her back into the hotel yesterday in scarves and sunglasses? She's alive. That was the spar Danny clung to. We made it. What if that waiter hadn’t spotted her? What if the ER doctor simply turned it over to the cops instead of phoning her dad in Florida? What if her bottle of Elevane had been full instead of half empty? Danny had broken the news to his ex-wife from Palm Beach Airport. Easier on everybody: he could deflect Pam’s panicky questions, and she could insist on paying his expenses instead of drop-ping everything to fly out from Cape Cod.

  • Gangnam Style” Go Viral in Japan?: Gender Divide and Subcultural Heterogeneity in Contemporary Japan
Why Didn’t “Gangnam Style” Go Viral in Japan?: Gender Divide and Subcultural Heterogeneity in Contemporary Japan John Lie, University of California, Berkeley Abstract Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was the global pop music and video sensation of 2012, but it failed to go viral in Japan. The involuted nature of the Japanese popular music industry—especially the imperative of indigenization—stunted the song’s dissemination. Simultaneously, the song failed to resonate with its potential base of Japanese K-pop fans, who valorized beauty and romance. In making sense of the Japanese reception of “Gangnam Style,” the author also analyzes the sources of both the Korean Wave and the anti–Korean Wave in Japan. Keywords: Japan, South Korea, popular culture, Korean Wave, K-pop, J-pop, anti–Korean Wave, gender, subculture, popular music, soap opera, Internet, virality, cultural globalization Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was the greatest global pop sensation of 2012.1 It not only registered over a billion hits on YouTube by the end of the year but also became the best-selling single in over thirty countries, including Austria and Australia, Belgium and Bulgaria.2 The singer’s pony- gallop dance could be seen nearly everywhere, as imitations and parodies proliferated. As a wag put it: “Gangnam Style parodies are the new Gangnam Style.”3 However, one OECD country that remained relatively immune to the viral video’s snare was Japan.4 As Erica Ho speculated in 2012 in Time magazine, The recent political climate in northeast Asia might have cooled the Japanese fever for Korean pop songs. In late August … a dispute erupted over the Takeshima and Dokdo islets between Japan and Korea, with both countries claiming ownership.

download triple h full album Arenataping. The #1 Source for Pro-Wrestling Music News & Insight. ‘Triple H: The Evolution of The Game’ vinyl album confirmed for August release. WWE have announced today that the 25th year anniversary of Triple H’s career will be celebrated with the release of special LP album of “The Game”‘s entrance music over the years, in collaboration with Motörhead. Alongside the release of limited-run vinyls, WWE also revealed “Motörhead x Triple H Collection” merchandise, from clothing to a poster of the artwork made for the album. The album was first revealed by Triple H in April, talking with Corey Graves on his podcast After the Bell , explaining that the plan was to drop the LP alongside an exclusive interview with Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, which was instead launched around the time of the podcast episode. “WWE Presents Triple H: The Evolution of The Game” is the name of the album, pressed by SPACELAB9, and it’s the first-ever vinyl release by WWE Music Group and the first physical music release since “The Music Vol. 10 – It’s A New Day” in 2010. The tracklist includes 11 of Triple H’s entrance themes made by Jim Johnston, Chris Warren, Motörhead and Lemmy Kilmister, leaving unreleased cuts from other artists still caged on WWE Music’s library. Two versions are available for pre-order, the gold vinyl is exclusive to the WWE Shop, while the silver vinyl is exclusive to FYE. A numbered autographed vinyl quickly sold out on WWE Shop, limited to 24 copies.

  • The Kinks: Preservation Alex Diblasi Prelude
The Kinks: Preservation Alex DiBlasi Prelude: In submitting this for Dave’s site, I felt the need to pre-empt my essay with a few things. My senior thesis from Indiana University is also on the Kinda Kinks site, complete with neatly-formatted citations and footnotes throughout. This piece has none of those, with most footnotes included in the text as parenthetical asides. What follows is my entire lecture on the Preservation rock opera, which I used as a script of sorts during my presentation. That said, there is no real formatting, quotes are uncited, and as this is the transcript of a speech rather than a proper essay, it makes for a much more informal read. I do currently have several other projects in the foreground (including a cross- country road-trip that my fiancée and I are using as the impetus for a book), but I certainly plan on returning to this subject, whether it is for a music journal, a book chapter, or even a book in and of itself. I also want to give a few quick precursory shout-outs: Dave Emlen, for running the greatest Kinks website in the world; Ray Davies biographer Tom Kitts, to whom I am forever indebted as both a friend and an academic; Nick Triano, for being an all- round swell guy; and lastly, Jim Mello, whose essay on “The Two Walters” can also be found on Kinda Kinks, someone with whom I have recently reconnected after first meeting in 2009. I hope you like what you read, and I encourage you to contact me via Facebook with any questions, comments, or vicious attacks.

  • Necessary People
CHAPTER ONE i was nineteen years old the first time I saved Stella Bradley’s life. One of the older boys who lived in a shabby off-campus house had managed to capture Stella’s attention. When Stella needed rescuing from these situations, from these men who couldn’t re- sist monopolizing her, she would signal to me. Tuck her hair behind her ear, tap a finger against her chin. But for the better part of an hour, she’d ignored me entirely. Ascending the stairs, she caught my eye. He’s cute, right? her shrugging look said. This one is worth it. Earlier that year, Stella had declared that she was finished with men. Immaturity and frattish antics aside, thePublishing men at our college were simply boring, and Stella couldn’t stand that. “You know what I mean, don’t you?” she had said. “It’s just not worth it.” “Totally,” I had replied. Which was a lie, and wasn’t. Stella’s intelligence often surprised me. Her categorical statements seemed silly but were in fact insightful. Are the men you meet when you’re eighteen really worth the effort? Well, I had no ex- perience with boys, so what did I know? But I could also see the truth she was getting at.
