Communiqué De Presse Communiqué De Presse 09 NOVEMBRE 2011 Renault Sport F1 preview to the Abu Dhabi GP The 2011 FIA Formula One World Championship reaches its final furlong this weekend with the penultimate race on the calendar, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Held at the Yas Marina circuit built on an island in the Persian Gulf just outside the centre of Abu Dhabi, it’s a state of the art complex that dwarves anything else in the series. The circuit, designed by Hermann Tilke, skirts round the huge new Marina and ultra­modern hotels and leisure complexes in a 5.554km loop. A long straight runs parallel with the harbour before switching back in a series of right angled corners along its front before passing spectacularly underneath the Yas Marina hotel reception. These slow to medium turns make it a relatively undemanding circuit for the RS27 engine, but the proximity to the ocean and the desert can throw up some unusual challenges for Renault Sport F1 engineers. Abu Dhabi Grand Prix facts and figures Abu Dhabi is a typical modern track with very few fast corners. The quickest complex is between turns 2 and 5 where speeds will be between 240 and 290kph. The car and driver will be subject to high lateral forces through this flowing section, pulling between +/­5g whilst changing direction. During the Friday practice sessions, it’s possible to run two different engine maps to deal with the very different temperatures between FP1 and FP2. FP1 takes place during the afternoon when temperatures can be very hot while FP2 takes place after sunset. Since the grip levels, tyre warm up and air pressure will change, the engine also needs to respond to this new set of parameters. Sand and grit blown in from the desert can be ingested into the engine via the air intakes, causing damage to the internals but also creating potential blockage points that can affect the cooling of the engine. Special filters may be run to minimize the risks of taking in too much sand. The long straight between turns seven and eight is nearly 1.2km and the RS27 will be at full throttle for 14secs, reaching speeds of over 310kph. Calibration of gear ratios is crucial for this straight; seventh gear must be right to get the best power under acceleration whilst allowing a competitive end of straight speed with DRS active. But also the braking zone at the end of the straight will see the driver brake down to second gear, meaning the engine must be set up to give good rear stability under braking. The third part of the track from turn 11 through to the final turn 21 features mainly right hand corners that are taken in second or third gear. The average speed through this section is just 160kph so the RS27 will be set up to give good driveability through this slower section whilst being responsive for the short bursts of power between turns. The drivers’ view Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull Racing I have great memories from Abu Dhabi, for obvious reasons. It will be good to go back and really enjoy it. The Yas Marina circuit is a modern track with very few fast corners, but a combination of tight right­angle corners through the final sector and very long straights followed by hairpins in sector two. The engine needs to be good through all the rev ranges for this reason; we’ve got to have good top end power for the 1.2km back straight but driveability through the final corners. Renault Sport F1 has done a great job on this type of circuit configuration this year so I’m confident we’ll have the power and response when we need it. The engineers’ view Head of Renault Sport F1 track operations Rémi Taffin gives his thoughts on Abu Dhabi The Yas Marina circuit is a very modern style track; mainly slow to medium corners, long straights and tight hairpin bends. Only 55% of the track is spent at full throttle, with average speeds of 190kph, so it’s not massively demanding on the RS27 engines. Nevertheless it’s still a difficult track to get right from an engine engineer’s perspective due to the numerous external factors that need careful management. Fuel consumption for instance is one of the highest of the year. The point­squirt nature of the track, particularly in the final sector, means the rate of consumption is particularly high, but the high atmospheric pressure due to being at sea level further increases the rate, putting Yas Marina alongside Melbourne in terms of the fuel levels needed at the start of the race. Cooling is another major concern here. Ambient temperatures are high during the day (around 28°C) but cooler during the night (around 19°C), which potentially requires two different settings. However since the race starts in daylight but finishes after sunset, a compromised setting must be found. There are now only two Grands Prix left this season and we’re pretty happy with our engine management across clients this year. We go to the final races able to introduce new units with all our drivers, which gives our partners a bit more flexibility. There are still a few more points to be won yet! Did you know… Renault Sport F1 has used some engines up to 2,800km in Friday practice sessions, allowing newer units to be introduced in qualifying and the race where the additional power is of real benefit. Steps taken to improve reliability over the winter and during the season have allowed this unprecedented amount of running. Renault in the Gulf Red Bull Racing­Renault has a 100% victory record at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel has won both races held at the Yas Marina track, with his 2010 victory securing the 2010 world championship title. Renault GCC is the regional office of Renault in the region covering the GCC [KSA, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar] and Iraq markets. Its headquarters are in Dubai. Renault has been in the region since 2007, offering a comprehensive and affordable line­up of 12 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The Renault Brand is now ranks number four among all European Brands in the GCC and three Renault models [Logan, Fluence and Safrane] are within the top 15 of all European models in the region. Renault GCC will end the year 2011 close to 10,000 units sales, a sales record for the Brand in the region. At the end of September 2011, Renault is the fastest growing car brand in the GCC with a growth of +160% compared to the same period last year with a Market Share of 0.7% versus 0.3% one year ago. In July 2010, Renault restarted its full­fledged operation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia [50% of the regional TIV market in the region] with the appointment of a new distributor, Gulf Advantage Automobile. In just over 14 months of operation, Renault is already the No. 1 European Brand in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and has the same position in Oman where the Brand is still maintaining its position as the No. 1 European Brand with the help of its distributor Suhail Bahwan Automobiles. Renault is committed to succeed in the region on a long ­ term basis by introducing new vehicles to its line­up with the launch this November of the New Renault Koleos and next year with the introduction of the new Renault Duster, which will be unveiled at the Dubai International Motor Show on November 10th. In January 2011, Renault GCC and Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi [UAE] entered into a 3 year partnership. Mr C: It feels like we are underway, the season is go and it’s been non-stop from the first green flag of the year. This is the first break we’ve had, a little bit of downtime for Sidepodcast, but still we are recording a new show for you, that’s how hard we are working this year. Christine: But after two races in a row we’ve got three weeks off now and then there’s another two races and then there’s another three weeks off, it’s just weird scheduling this calendar. Mr C: It’s a crazy calendar, but it makes sense for the people who have to endure it. If you are a Formula 1 team who has to pay personnel to go off overseas, back-to-back races makes a lot of sense. You can cram in a lot of action, you can cram in a lot of racing in a fortnight, and then you can get back to base and save yourself a lot of money and in these troubled economic times, that is essential, so you can’t hold in against… you cannot hold the calendar against the people who have to go out there and live it. Christine: No. And having three weeks off gives us plenty of time to ponder everything that happened in Malaysia because my goodness that was a controversial race.

The penultimate lap was a very good lap but unfortunately it was taken away. I touched the kerb but it pulled me further. It didn't feel like I was going to be running wide but the car bottomed and kind of bounced just outside the line. A lot of pressure for that last lap. I was just sitting in the garage and I knew that I couldn't let the guys down as on the first lap I had.

The company is believed to have taken the decision after indications in Japan that the automotive markets are not getting any better, Honda having recently announced a 56% drop in earnings in the last quarter, compared to 2008. Prior to that the company was looking at other options, such as selling the team on to someone else. This has now been axed and the company will simply close things down and settle all the necessary contractual commitments as quickly as possible. The news, if confirmed, will be another blow to the manufacturer power in F1 as it will be the third withdrawal by a major car company in 11 months, following in the footsteps of Honda and BMW. There are also doubts about the future of Renault's factory team. The news will also be a blow to the Formula One Teams' Association, although the members have learned that working together produces much better results than trying to take on the authorities alone. It also means that there are now just three manufacturers left: Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault, and engine supply from Cosworth will become essential to ensure there are sufficient engines to go around.

    P ZERO YELLOW EXPERIMENTAL TYRE MAKES ITS DEBUT IN ABU DHABI Abu Dhabi, November 11th, 2011 – As part of its preparation for the 2012 season, Pirelli gave a new experimental version of the P Zero Yellow soft tyre its debut today, during the two free practice sessions at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. McLaren‟s Lewis Hamilton has emerged quickest with a time of 1m39.586s, set during the second session using Pirelli‟s current P Zero Yellow soft tyre. Hamilton‟s time is already close to last year‟s pole position: 1m39.394s set by Sebastian Vettel. Each driver was allocated an extra two sets of the experimental soft compound tyre, for today only. This new tyre, which sits in between the current soft and the current supersoft, set fastest time in free practice one with a benchmark of 1m40.263s thanks to McLaren driver Jenson Button. McLaren was on top for most of the session and seemed set for a one-two before Red Bull Racing‟s Mark Webber demoted Hamilton to third: all driving on the experimental tyre. This tyre was used during both sessions, meaning that the teams had a total of five sets available throughout the day. The experimental tyres will be returned tonight, with the usual tyre allocation for Saturday and Sunday applicable from now on. The teams concentrated on the two tyre compounds that will be used for the race for the last hour of free practice two on varying fuel loads, with the McLarens of Jenson Button and then Lewis Hamilton going fastest on the conventional P Zero Yellow.
