Kemp led the NL in home runs (39), RBI (126) and runs scored (115) while finishing third in batting average (.324). • Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko (1996 Sun Cities Solar Sox) became the 27th member of the Arizona Fall League Hall of Fame following his Oct. 22 induction at Salt River Fields. The Scottsdale resident and Chaparral High School alum owns seven 30-homer seasons and six 100-RBI seasons during his illustrious 15-year career. • A total of 99 Arizona Fall League alumni graced the rosters of the eight teams in the MLB playoffs, representing nearly 50% of the 200 players on post-season rosters. Leading the way were the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals, who had 14 former Fall Leaguers each on their 25-man rosters for the ALDS and NLDS. • Three of the last four no. 1 overall picks in the MLB First-Year Player Draft are playing in this year’s Arizona Fall League: RHP Gerrit Cole (Mesa) was drafted first by the Pirates in 2011, OF Bryce Harper (Scottsdale) was taken first by the Nationals in 2010 and IF Tim Beckham (Surprise) was made the first overall selection by the Rays in 2008. Additionally, RHP Stephen Strasburg, the no. 1 pick of the Nationals in 2009, played for Phoenix in 2009, meaning the last four no. 1 overall picks have played in the AFL. • Since 1992, the year the Arizona Fall League started, 13 of the 20 no. 1 overall picks in the MLB draft will have played in the AFL. The current streak of four straight no. 1 picks (2008-11) is the second-longest streak, following a five-year stretch (1997-2001) that saw Matt Anderson (1997), Pat Burrell (1998), Josh Hamilton (1999), Adrian Gonzalez (2000) and Joe Mauer (2001) all participate in the AFL. • The Arizona Fall League will have two games televised nationally on the MLB Network and online at MLB.TV this season: the Rising Stars Game on November 5 and the AFL Championship Game on November 19. • Get up-to-the-minute updates from the Arizona Fall League through the league’s social media efforts, on Twitter (@MLBazFallLeague) and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/arizonafallleague. • HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY the 2019 Season Signifies the 42Nd Season for the Nashville Sounds
HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY The 2019 season signifies the 42nd season for the Nashville Sounds. It’s the 22nd season as a member of the 16- team Pacific Coast League, and the first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Despite the 42nd season as the Nashville Sounds, baseball’s roots in Nashville go back to the 19th Century. In fact, baseball has been played in Middle Tennessee since at least 1860, when the Republican Banner newspaper published a July 25th report on the game’s popularity the previous fall. During the Civil War, Union soldiers temporarily based here helped spread the game in the local community. Home field was a place known as the Sulphur Springs Bottom, a half-mile north of today’s state capitol. When the original Southern League was organized in 1885, Nashville was a charter city and games were played at Nashville’s Athletic Park, as the Sulphur Springs Bottom location came to be known. The city fielded several entries in the league over the next ten years -- the Americans (1885-86), the Blues (1887), the Tigers (1893-94), and the Seraphs (1895) -- but was unable to claim a pennant. When the Southern Association was formed in 1901, Athletic Park – which was later given the name Sulphur Dell by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice -- became the permanent home to the Nashville Volun- teers (or Vols, for short), who played there for the next 61 years. Under the guidance of manager Newt Fisher, the Nashville club won the SA’s first two pennants. The team, which was not known as the Vols until a “name the team” contest conducted prior to the 1908 season, continued to build a solid, loyal fan base.

MLB.COM Leake goes five strong, Satin plays hero as Reds rally vs. A's Satin hits homer, adds game-winning single in 9th By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com / [email protected] / @m_sheldon GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- In a game that featured strong starting pitchers from both sides, the Reds emerged with a 4-3 comeback win over the A's on Sunday afternoon at Goodyear Ballpark. A's rotation candidate Kendall Graveman tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and five strikeouts. Oakland pitchers kept the Reds' bats mostly quiet until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Josh Satin, a non-roster invite, slugged a three-run homer off Brock Huntzinger to tie the game at 3-3. Satin added a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth off Fernando Rodriguez, scoring Kristopher Negron to cap his four-RBI day. Meanwhile, Reds starter Mike Leake gave up one earned run and four hits over his five innings with no walks and two strikeouts. It was the first run Leake surrendered in four starts during what's been a strong spring. Oakland reached Leake with three hits in the top of the fourth inning, including a double to right-center field by Mark Canha that scored Marcus Semien. A second run was prevented from crossing on a perfectly executed relay from center fielder Skip Schumaker to shortstop Zack Cozart to catcher Tucker Barnhart, who tagged out Ike Davis.
