Peoria LHP Danny Hultzen (SEA) tossed four innings of two-hit, shutout baseball and struck out five before four relievers completed the combined 8-0 shutout win over Salt River Monday. Hultzen lowered his ERA to 1.62 and ranks fifth in the category; he will make his next start in Saturday’s AFL Rising Stars Game. 2. Phoenix RHP David Phelps (NYY) held Mesa to one hit and one walk over five shutout frames Monday while striking out three in the no- decision. 3. Peoria 3B Jedd Gyorko (SD) went 3-for-4 with 1 double, 1 home run, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored Monday, claiming a 20-point lead in the AFL batting race with a .415 average. It was Gyorko’s first multi-hit game since his AFL season-high 5-for-5 day Oct. 20. 4. Peoria 1B Matt Adams (STL) belted a three-run homer on his way to a five-RBI day in Peoria’s 8-0 win Monday. 5. At 17-6 (.738), the Surprise Saguaros are on pace to break the AFL win percentage record (.705, 1999 Mesa Solar Sox). The Sags need to go 10-4 or better in their final 14 games to accomplish the feat. 2011 Arizona Fall League Tidbits • The official rosters for the sixth-annual AFL Rising Stars Game will be released today via the AFL Twitter account (@MLBazFallLeague). • Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp (2005 Phoenix Desert Dogs) was given the 2011 Hank Aaron Award last week, being recognized as the most outstanding offensive performer in the National League. Kemp led the NL in home runs (39), RBI (126) and runs scored (115) while finishing third in batting average (.324). • Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko (1996 Sun Cities Solar Sox) became the 27th member of the Arizona Fall League Hall of Fame following his Oct. 22 induction at Salt River Fields. The Scottsdale resident and Chaparral High School alum owns seven 30-homer seasons and six 100-RBI seasons during his illustrious 15-year career. • A total of 99 Arizona Fall League alumni graced the rosters of the eight teams in the MLB playoffs, representing nearly 50% of the 200 players on post-season rosters. • Three of the last four no. 1 overall picks in the MLB First-Year Player Draft are playing in this year’s Arizona Fall League: RHP Gerrit Cole (Mesa) was drafted first by the Pirates in 2011, OF Bryce Harper (Scottsdale) was taken first by the Nationals in 2010 and IF Tim Beckham (Surprise) was made the first overall selection by the Rays in 2008. Additionally, RHP Stephen Strasburg, the no. 1 pick of the Nationals in 2009, played for Phoenix in 2009, meaning the last four no. 1 overall picks have played in the AFL. Since 1992, the year the Arizona Fall League started, 13 of the 20 no. 1 overall picks in the MLB draft will have played in the AFL. The same, wide smile that endeared him to teammates, coaches and fans across two continents was more obvious. “This is for my growth and experience,” Otsuka said Tuesday. “This is my challenge, to become a major league coach. And I want to help the players. Everybody helped me a lot when I was a player, so now I want to give back.” Otsuka, who pitched for the Padres from 2004-05, has returned to the organization with an unprecedented title: Triple-A El Paso’s bullpen coach. It definitely lived up to its billing. Several of the top prospects in the game shone bright Saturday as the West Division powered past the East Division, 11-2, in the sixth annual Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game at Surprise Stadium. It was a night of hits, misses, strikes and surprises. And stars, of course. The highly anticipated showdown on the mound between the East's Gerrit Cole (Pittsburgh), the first overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, and the West's Danny Hultzen (Seattle), the second overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, was overshadowed by the West's offensive onslaught, led by Seattle shortstop prospect Nick Franklin. Franklin, selected in the first round in 2009 by Seattle, finished 4-for-5 with a home run on a memorable night in Arizona. Franklin's four hits, two doubles, four RBIs and three extra-base hits all set new Rising Stars Game records. His team finished with 16 hits in the game. "It was really fun," Franklin said. "We had some fans and were enjoying the experience beforehand. We went out there to have a good time and started to put some runs on the board. We started having some fun in the dugout, and it carried over." Hultzen did his part, and there's no doubt that the front office in Seattle is feeling content right about now.
