    6 Marine Fisheries Information Service T&E Ser., No. 207, 2011 Role of co-operative societies in black clam fishery and trade in Vembanad Lake N. Suja and K. S. Mohamed Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi Lime shells and live clams are distributed in large quantities in the backwaters and estuaries of Kerala. Vembanad, the largest lake of Kerala, also holds a vast resource of lime shells and live clam, comprising several species. The major species that account for the clam fishery of Vembanad Lake is the black clam Villorita cyprinoides. The lime shells that contribute to the fishery are broadly classified as the ‘white shells’ and the ‘black shells’. The so-called ‘white shells’ are sub-soil deposits of fossilized shells and are known to extend upto 7 feet below the lake bottom. The black shells are obtained from the living population of V. cyprinoides, which contribute more than 90% of the clams from this lake. The lime shell is mainly used for the manufacture of cement, calcium carbide and sand lime bricks. They are also used for lime burning, for construction, in paddy field / fish farms for neutralizing acid soil and as slaked lime. This is used as a raw material for the manufacture of distemper, glass, rayon, paper and sugar.     Final Report Investment Proposal - Ferry Services RETA 6293: Cities Development Initiative for Asia June 2010 Pre-Feasibility Study Urban Transport, Cochin, India Cities Development Initiative for Asia RETA 6293 Pre-Feasibility Study Urban Transport, Cochin, India Final Report Investment Proposal - Ferry Services GlobalWorks Forward This investment proposal is one of three investment proposals developed under a transport sector pre- feasibility assessment (PFS) for Cochin, India. The PFS was jointly funded by the Cochin Corporation and the Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA), and conducted between December 2009 and June 2010. The outputs of the PFS include an innovative transport sector strategy for Cochin, together with three high-priority transport sector investment proposals for immediate implementation. These proposals include ferry services, priority bus lanes, park and pay and pedestrian over bridges, and pedestrian precincts with supporting park and pay facilities. This report addresses the investment proposal for the ferry services. The proposal firstly summarizes the status, constraints and challenges facing Cochin‟s transport sector, leading to a summary of the innovative transport sector strategy which has been developed for the city to meet these challenges. This then leads into a presentation of the proposed ferry service investment proposal, providing technical, financial, economic, and social and environmental safeguard analysis for pre-feasibility due diligence. The proposal also provides a preferred implementation schedule for the initiative, and recommends institutional restructuring and strengthening activities necessary to assure long term viability of the investments. There is considerable public private partnership (PPP) opportunity in the ferry services proposal. The PPP potential is also therefore addressed. Formulation of this PFS has only been possible due to the vision and leadership provided by the Corporation through the Mayor Professor Mercy Williams.

Travel aboard a traditional nine-cabin wooden rice barge on what promises be an enlightening as well as an extremely relaxing holiday. Kerala has an extensive network of water ways that lace its interior coastline, stretching along almost its entire length of around 600kms. It is a land of copious rainfall which flows from the hills and mountain passes in freshwater canals and streams to join the 40 odd rivers in the state. This labyrinthine network of canals, streams and rivers, which converge to form lagoons, make up the Backwaters and give rise to an unique eco system which is a haven for nature. The area has been named by National Geographic as the ‘Green Venice of the East’ due to the green coconut trees which turn the backwaters a vibrant emerald green, with the setting sun adding splashes of red, all contributing to the serenity of this tropical destination. The water-ways teem with life as wooden boats are the only way of travelling between villages. Along the way we will visit temples, churches, marketplaces, paddy fields, beaches and boat building yards. We will learn about and experience the vibrant culture of the region including coir handloom weaving, snake boat regattas, traditional toddy tapping, local dances, martial arts and festivals.
