International Concrete Repair Institute www.icricarolinas.org Carolinas Chapter President’s Message March 2015 Tara Cavalline UNC Charlotte Hello everyone! As we move into 2015, the ICRI Carolinas Chapter has big things planned. But first, I’d like to take a minute to reflect on 2014. We held a highly successful MegaDemo at NCSU in May. This two-day event featured a wide array of presentations and demonstrations, and was attended by a diverse spectrum of members and guests. The Fall 2014 Conference in Charleston, SC included a boat and walking tour of the Ravenel Bridge in addition to a great lineup of speakers. The very popular WCA/ICRI golf and sporting clay events helped secure funds to support another student scholarship. Due to the leadership of Board Members Bruce Stoerkel and Ben Smith, a service project was completed at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh, NC. And last but not least, a new year brings personnel changes… Please take a minute to thank our Immediate Past President, Doug Saunders, and our out-going Board Member Bill Fortuna for their service, and welcome our newest board members, Bob Crosser and Jim Hadley.

Our Board of Directors strives to put together events that are both educational and enjoyable. Based on our planned 2015 events, this year should be another great one for our Chapter. Our Spring 2015 Conference in Charlotte will include a pre- conference social event at a Charlotte Knights game, several outstanding speakers (see agenda included in this newsletter), and a Hardhat Tour of Bank of America Stadium to observe and learn about the stadium renovations. Additionally, we have laid the groundwork for the Fall 2015 Convention in Wilmington, NC, which is a great venue for our fall event. As usual, the annual golf and sporting clay events are planned, and we look forward to “good times for a good cause” at these outings that support the scholarship fund.

As we move forward in 2015, one of the focuses of our Chapter will be striving to recruit and retain new members. We encourage you to reach out to others in our trade/industry, as well as others in your own organization, that could benefit from our educational and networking events. Please encourage junior professionals and staff to become involved in this organization, as this year’s new members could become our future leadership.

Our Board strives to be accessible to our membership – please contact us if you have questions, suggestions, or other feedback. Without input from our membership, efforts to improve and enhance our events and programs are not as effective. If you have a proposed event topic, a speaker suggestion, or an excursion idea, please let us know. Thank you for your support. I look forward to a great 2015 with the ICRI Carolinas Chapter! Tara

Lead off your 2015 ICRI Spring Conference at Miller Lite Rooftop Party Zone at BB&T Ballpark with a pre- game all-you-can eat buffet + 2 beer tickets. Sponsored by:

Conference attendees earn 5 PDH’s 2015 SPRING CONFERENCE IN CHARLOTTE Our chance to hit a home run and score a touchdown.

We are all very excited about the 2015 Carolinas Chapter Spring Conference, May 14-15 at the Residence Inn – Downtown in Charlotte, conveniently located across the street on one side by the new BB&T Ballpark (home of the Charlotte Knights) and on the other side is the recently renovated Panthers Stadium and we will be going to both fields. How good is this gonna be? The WCA Board has scheduled its Board meeting Thursday morning so they will be in town and have a chance to attend the ICRI Conference; you don’t want to miss it.

Things start BIG courtesy of Kenseal Construction Products and BASF who are sponsoring Thursday night hospitality AT THE BALLPARK. The fun starts at the Miller Lite Rooftop Party Zone, BB&T Ballpark at 600pm with a pre-game all-you-can eat buffet + 2 beer tickets. You’ll be chowing down on Buffalo chicken wings, hot dog sliders, all beef meatballs, soft pretzels and mustard, grilled asparagus, fresh vegetables & ranch dressing, slow cooked pulled pork and humus/ bruschetta dipping station.

Then at 700pm the Charlotte Knights take the field against the Louisville Bats, and by the way, it is a $3 Thirsty Thursday Promo Night presented by Hickory Tavern. Fans 21 and over can enjoy $3 small draft beers until the end of the 7th inning. NOTE: this will replace the traditional hotel hospitality suite.

The next morning we return to the skybox Luxury Suite Lounge at BB&T Ball Park for tabletops and morning technical sessions on “MEETING THE CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES OF DESIGN OF TODAY’S CIVIL STRUCTURES” along with a presentation from Stone Restoration on their winning 2014 Project of the Year submission. We have an awesome group of speakers, see the full agenda and their bios in this newsletter.

Then we leave the baseball stadium, have buffet lunch in the hotel and then go on a renovation tour of Panthers Stadium. While that will conclude the formal agenda, if you want more of a sports fix, stay over an extra night and take in NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway (Night Race for $1 million purse).

2015 CHAPTER SERVICE PROJECT ANNOUNCED: VOLUNTEER NOW FOConferenceR MAY 14 Attendees earn 5 PDH’s

ICRI-CC is pleased to announce it has chosen a service project for 2015. The completion of an annual service project is an integral part of our chapter’s rating from ICRI National, but more importantly is a way we can provide a service to people in need. If you are interested in seeing last year’s, it is on the chapter website.

This year we will be providing labor and material to repair the brick facing on a concrete retaining wall for the Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region (HPCCR) in Charlotte, NC. The Mission of HPCCR is to relieve suffering and improve the quality and dignity of life through compassionate hospice care for those at the end of life, palliative care for those with advanced illness, and through community education. As they are a non-profit organization, they rely heavily on volunteers and donations to provide vital services to people in need. We will perform the project on Thursday, May 14, 2015 – just prior to the ICRI-CC Spring Convention in Charlotte. Please put this date on your calendar and take one day to volunteer or help by donating some materials. We will need some brick, mortar, and wall ties as well as some volunteer labor. We’ll start at 9:00am and hope to finish by 3:00 pm. We’ll send out an email soon to provide additional information. Please contact Bruce Stoerkel (bstoerkel@ statesvilleroofing.com) or Benjamin Smith ([email protected]) to help.
