Le monde de la culture dans son ensemble, et le cinéma en particulier, ont énormément souffert de la crise sanitaire. Salles fermées durant deux mois, tournages arrêtés ou interrompus, auteurs, artistes et intermittents au chômage, 2020 est une année noire pour le cinéma. On s’est aperçu combien ce qui nous paraissait banal, entrer dans une salle de cinéma, pouvait nous manquer. Peu à peu, les cinémas ont rouvert leurs portes, mais dans des conditions telles que certains auront des diffi cultés à surmonter la très forte baisse de fréquentation. C’est donc à vous, public, d’aider nos exploitants en revenant voir des fi lms et en venant partager des émotions. Et à Saint-Jean-de-Luz, nous devons d’autant plus le faire que le Sélect, ce n’est pas que du cinéma. C’est aussi un accueil, une convivialité, une proximité que l’on ne trouve nulle part ailleurs. Le Festival du fi lm s’inscrit cette année dans cette perspective. Le taux de remplissage ne sera pas le même en raison des contraintes sanitaires, mais la qualité sera au rendez-vous, avec un jury présidé par le réalisateur Xavier Legrand. Une exposition des photos de Manuel Moutier des artistes ayant participé aux précédentes éditions sera proposée aux Halles. Venez nombreux pour encourager celles et ceux qui se sont attelés à organiser une nouvelle édition d’un Festival qui mise sur l’avenir avec des premiers ou deuxièmes fi lms de jeunes réalisateurs.

Porteurs d’un souffle audacieux, ces visages de demain enrichissent déjà de manière brillante l’art cinématographique d’aujourd’hui. Le projet Révélations réunit les comédiennes et comédiens sélectionnés par le Comité Révélations de l’Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma. Il met en lumière et en images ces nouveaux talents incandescents qui s’apprêtent à briller sur nos écrans pour de nombreuses années. Pour sa douzième édition, le projet Révélations a fait appel à Deniz Gamze Ergüven dont la caméra dans Mustang, son premier film récompensé aux César en 2016 et nommé aux Oscars la même année, a su mettre en lumière la liberté et l’audace d’une jeunesse indocile. En filmant aujourd’hui ces 36 Révélations, elle s’applique à capter la poésie d’un groupe mué par la liberté de s’exprimer et de créer. Le film qu’elle nous propose souligne l’unité et l’harmonie émanant avec force de ces acteurs en devenir…. Les Révélations 2018 se placent également sous le signe de la nouveauté en élaborant un partenariat inédit avec la Maison CHANEL. Tout comme l’Académie des César, CHANEL s’implique depuis de nombreuses années dans la reconnaissance et la mise en avant de jeunes talents, et trouve une place de choix au sein de ce projet ambitieux.

Il a choisi de mettre en scène cette nouvelle génération de talents au sein d’un « marathon de danse », ces compétitions épuisantes qui se déroulaient aux États-Unis pendant la Grande Dépression, magnifiquement immortalisé par Jane Fonda dans un film de Sydney Pollack dans les années 60. À travers la vision artistique de Lukas Dhont, il n’est plus question d’affrontement, mais au contraire, de solidarité et de cohésion. Ce sont 24 comédiennes et comédiens, inspirants et enivrants, qui ont été choisis cette année par le Comité Révélations de l’Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma pour composer les Révélations 2021. Récompensée par le César du Meilleur Film Documentaire en 2020 pour «M», témoignage puissant de la fureur de vivre d’un homme brutalisé dès l’enfance, c’est avec tendresse que la réalisatrice Yolande Zauberman pose aujourd’hui son regard sur ce millésime. Au travers d’un court métrage réunissant celles et ceux qui incarneront le cinéma de demain, Yolande Zauberman capte la joie, la beauté et la pluralité de cette jeunesse bouillonnante, désireuse de jouer, de danser, de vivre, alors que nos quotidiens sont durement bousculés.
