  • The Age of Television Innovative TV and Radio Formats
1950s The age of television In 1950 there were 12 million radio-only licences and only 350,000 combined radio and TV licences. The budget for BBC Television was a fraction of the Radio budget. But a single event transformed the popularity of television. This was the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953 in Westminster Abbey. Permission had never been given before for television cameras in the Abbey. Some even felt it was wrong for people to watch such a solemn occasion while drinking tea in their front rooms. An estimated 20 million TV viewers saw the young Queen crowned, most of them outside their own homes. This was a turning point and the first time that a television audience exceeded the size of a radio audience. So today The Queen will ascend the steps of her throne… in the sight today of a great multitude of people. Richard Dimbleby, Coronation commentary By 1954 there were well over three million combined sound and vision licences. The television age had arrived and in 1955 the Queen broadcast her Christmas Message on television for the first time. The mid-Fifties introduced some major TV names of the future, including David Attenborough (Zoo Quest 1954), Eamonn Andrews (This Is Your Life 1955) and Jack Warner (Dixon of Dock Green 1955). Drama successes such as The Quatermass Experiment and the controversial adaptation of Nineteen Eighty Four became talking points all over the country. In September 1955 the BBC’s broadcasting monopoly came to an end when ITV was launched. The impact of competition had an instant impact on BBC Television and its share of the audience fell as low as 28% in 1957.

McIntosh, H.G. Musgrove, Connors & Paul, Frank Neil, Wallace R. Parnell, Bruce Carroll and David N. Martin. The Tivoli Circuit grew to include Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth by the turn of the century, promoting a broad spectrum of both local and international vaudeville acts including comedians, dancers, acrobats, ventriloquists, and scantily-clad chorus girls who where colloquially known as the “Tivoli Tappers”. HANCOCK’S HALF HOUR COLLECTIBLES Notes to Accompany Volume 4 All photographs copyright (C) BBC The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society is delighted to have given its support to the production of this new and unique series concerning the lost work of Tony Hancock. Undated publicity shot of Tony Hancock. The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society The THAS was formed in 1976 just 8 years after Tony had died at the young age of 44. The Society was formed with the aim of promoting and preserving the work of Hancock and, whilst this remains the aim of the Society today, the environment in which the Society now operates is very different from that of 1976, with all surviving radio and TV episodes of Hancock’s Half Hour 1 now commercially available to purchase. If we turn the clock back to 1976, we find a very different scenario. At the time, the BBC outsourced commercial releases to mainstream record labels such as Pye Records for Hancock’s Half Hour and Parlophone for The Goon Show. It wasn’t until 1967 that BBC records were created with the purpose of undertaking commercial releases of BBC programmes. At the time of the formation of the THAS in 1976, just two relatively complete radio episodes were available on the This is Hancock Long Player (LP) record released in 1960 (The Wild Man of the Woods (4/16 27 January 1957) and A Sunday Afternoon at Home (5/14 22 April 1958)). In addition, extracts from four radio shows were available on the LP Pieces of Hancock released in 1960 and a further nine extracts were included on the BBC records 1973 release Unique Hancock.

In 2013, Christine Fernon and I edited a history of the dictionary, The ADB’s Story, which covered its first six decades.2 The ADB going online in 2006 then seemed to be the major turning point. At the time, it was the book reproduced online with a search function. The pace of change has quickened, however, since Volume 18 was published in 2012. Above all, the ADB Online now leads the process, with the hardcopy volume being published in its wake, rather than the other way around.

50 Years of the Stables Griffin Theatre Podcast Series Episode One: In the Beginning With Ron Blair, Lillian Horler and Anna Volska In 1970, a passionate group of indie theatre-makers got hold of a run-down Kings Cross building and turned it into a theatre. Hear about how the legendary founders of the space made the Stables Theatre the nexus of Australian plays. Speakers: AC – Angela Catterns LH – Lilian Horler AV – Anna Volska RB – Ron Blair Angela Catterns (AC): 2020 marks the 50th birthday of Griffin Theatre Company’s home, the Stables Theatre. I’m Angela Catterns. Join us as we celebrate the anniversary in this special series of podcasts, where we will hear about the theatre’s history, and talk to some of the country’s most celebrated artists. AC: Lillian Horler, Anna Volska and Ron Blair were all there at the very beginning. Ron how did you get involved? What was your role? Ron Blair (RB): Well, role is a grand word for ah [laughs]. What happened was, John went away with Anna (AV) to England to work in the Royal Shakespeare company. AC: John Bell? RB: John Bell did. AC: Who I think you went to university with? RB: I did, indeed and we kept in touch. Occasionally he would write a letter, describing life at the Royal Shakespeare company. He then one day said that I would really like to come home, and work in the Australian theatre. I remember I would see Ken Horler fairly regularly, who by this stage was certainly married to Lillian who is sitting next to me here.
