  • BFI Press Release: Missing Believed Wiped Bumper Christmas Stocking
For Immediate Release: Tuesday 7 November 2017, London. The BFI’s Missing Believed Wiped returns to BFI Southbank this December to present British television rediscoveries, not seen by audiences for decades, since their original transmission dates. The exciting, bespoke line-up of TV gems feature some of our most-loved television celebrities and iconic characters including Alf Garnett in Till Death Us Do Part: Sex Before Marriage, Cilla Black in her eponymous BBC show featuring Dudley Moore , Jimmy Edwards in Whack-O!, a rare interview with Peter Davison about playing Doctor Who and a significant screen debut from a young Pete Postlethwaite. Lost for 50 years and thought only to survive in part, Till Death Us Do: Sex Before Marriage, originally broadcast on 2 January, 1967 on BBC1, sees Warren Mitchell’s Alf Garnett rail against the permissive society, featuring guest star John Junkin alongside regular cast members Dandy Nichols, Anthony Booth and Una Stubbs. Although the existence of this missing episode from the 2nd series has been known for some years, previous attempts to screen the episode had been refused with the print in the hands of a private collector. Having recently changed hands, MBW is delighted that access has been granted for this special one off screening, for one of 1960s best known and controversial UK television characters. Following last year’s successful screening of a previously lost episode of Jimmy Edwards’s popular 1950s BBC school-themed comedy romp Whack-O!, this year’s MBW programme includes a 1959 episode entitled The Empty Cash Box. Written by Frank Muir and Dennis Norden and starring Jimmy Edwards as the cane-happy headmaster, this episode was originally broadcast on the BBC on 1st December 1959.

Many of Australia’s greatest radio serials were produced during the 1940s. Among those listed in this guide are the Sunday night one-hour plays - The Lux Radio Theatre and The Macquarie Radio Theatre (becoming the Caltex Theatre after 1947); the many Jack Davey Shows, and The Bob Dyer Show; the Colgate Palmolive variety extravaganzas, headed by Calling the Stars, The Youth Show and McCackie Mansion, which starred the outrageously funny Mo (Roy Rene). Fine drama programs produced in Sydney in the 1940s included The Library of the Air and Max Afford's serial Hagen's Circus. Among the comedy programs listed from this decade are the George Wallace Shows, and Mrs 'Obbs with its hilariously garbled language.

  • Keith Connolly
KEITH CONNOLLY (1897-1961) Keith Connolly performed with his parents' variety troupe from age seven and while in his teens was a member of the Young Australia League. In 1916 he enlisted with the A.I.F. and went on to serve with the Mining Corps. After returning home in 1919 he and his sister Gladys Shaw toured with such troupes as the Royal Strollers (1919) and Nat Phillips' Stiffy and Mo Company (1921-25) before forming Keith's Syncopating Jesters (1925-27). Connolly's career, which continued well into the 1950s, included engagements with George Wallace (1930), Nat Phillip's Whirligigs, Fullers All-American Revue Co (including New Zealand, 1939) and in companies featuring Roy Rene, Stud Foley, Nellie Kolle and his wife, Elsie Hosking. 1897-1918 Keith Connolly’s earliest engagements earned him enthusiastic reviews: ….absolutely the youngest character comedian on the vaudeville stage, 'Master Keith' (who is only 8 years of age)…gives remarkable imitations of the leading English and American character comedians such as Little Tich, Dan Leno etc.…1 The Sydney Daily Telegraph in speaking of this item says: - 'His songs and imitations, as well as his comic make-up, kept the audience in roars of laughter, and he was recalled again and again. We have listened to many adult comedians and have enjoyed their performances, but the extreme youth of this clever performer, coupled with his marvellous power of imitation, at once captivated all hearts.'2 Keith Warrington Connolly's father was Gerald Shaw (aka Harry Thomson) an enthusiastic basso and theatrical manager with an early interest in moving pictures.

Title. 327.41092 Editor: Julie Stokes Designer: Beverly Swifte Proofreader: Tony Twining Printed by Lamb Printers, Perth FOREWORD Autobiographies all too often conceal the true essence of their authors, instead depicting them as they see themselves or, perhaps worse, as they would wish to be seen. Collected letters are sometimes little better, concealing from the addressee, and consequently from other readers, as much or more than they reveal. John Mason's remarkable work is neither autobiography nor conventional collection of letters. From it there emerges a fascinating portrait of a man's development from 17-year-old soldier at the end of the Second World War to senior diplomat of some 40 years later; insights, too, into many of the events of the troubled second half of this century. The letters collected here are those John Mason wrote regularly, for over 40 years, to his mother and, after her death, to his sister; recounting his remarkable and very varied career over those years.

  • A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” August 2017
Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” August 2017 Track 1 Summertime Blues Summertime Blues is a song co-written and recorded by American rockabilly artist Eddie Cochran. Edward Raymond "Eddie" Cochran (October 3, 1938 – April 17, 1960) was an American musician. Cochran's rockabilly songs, such as "Summertime Blues", "C'mon Everybody", and "Somethin' Else", captured teenage frustration and desire in the mid-1950s and early 1960s. He was involved with music from an early age, playing in the school band and teaching himself to play blues guitar as well as piano, bass and drums. His image as a sharply dressed and good-looking young man with a rebellious attitude epitomized the stance of the 1950s rocker, and in death he achieved an iconic status. Cochran died at age 21 after a road accident, while travelling in a taxi in Chippenham, Wiltshire, during his British tour in April 1960, having just performed at Bristol's Hippodrome theatre. Though his best-known songs were released during his lifetime, more of his songs were released posthumously. Track 2 Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer is a song on the 1963 album of the same name by Nat King Cole, Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American musician who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist. He owes most of his popular musical fame to his soft baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres.

  • Artists, Managers and Employees
APPENDIX A HARRY CLAY'S VAUDEVILLE COMPANY SURVEY OF ARTISTS, MANAGERS, PARTNERS AND EMPLOYEES: 1901-1929 NB: An updated and revised version of this Appendix is presented in Clay Djubal's 2005 Ph D thesis "What Oh Tonight" (see Appendix H). That version includes several hundred new entries. The list is also regularly updated in the Australian Variety Theatre Archive. See: http://ozvta.com/research-lists/ (or at Pandora: http://nla.gov.au/nla.arc-143747) The following list has been compiled during the course of research undertaken for this dissertation. While every attempt has been made to locate the names and information regarding artists and employees engaged by Harry Clay’s organisation during the period 1901 to 1929, it must be conceded that the greater portion of this list has been compiled from available sources between the years 1914 and 1925. As discussed in Chapter Three of this thesis, there was little in the way of advertising or magazine reviews concerning Harry Clay’s operations during the years 1901-1913, other than in relation to the NSW/Qld tours reported in various country newspapers. While these sources have provided the survey with data concerning the tours, it is likely that many more artists were employed during those years. This situation, too, has caused some confusion as to whether several leading entertainers during this period, artists such as Jim Gerald and Clyde Cook,1 for example, were or were not associated with Clay's. Research for this thesis has so far failed to locate any definite primary evidence to support the claims that these two performers were engaged by Clay, and hence they have been left out of the survey.

  • Ealing Studios and the Ealing Comedies: the Tip of the Iceberg
Ealing Studios and the Ealing Comedies: the Tip of the Iceberg ROBERT WINTER* In lecture form this paper was illustrated with video clips from Ealing films. These are noted below in boxes in the text. My subject is the legendary Ealing Studios comedies. But the comedies were only the tip of the iceberg. To show this I will give a sketch of the film industry leading to Ealing' s success, and of the part played by Sir Michael Balcon over 25 years.! Today, by touching a button or flicking a switch, we can see our values, styles, misdemeanours, the romance of the past and present-and, with imagination, a vision of the" future. Now, there are new technologies, of morphing, foreground overlays, computerised sets, electronic models. These technologies affect enormously our ability to give currency to our creative impulses and credibility to what we do. They change the way films can be produced and, importantly, they change the level of costs for production. During the early 'talkie' period there many artistic and technical difficulties. For example, artists had to use deep pan make-up to' compensate for the high levels of carbon arc lighting required by lower film speeds. The camera had to be put into a soundproof booth when shooting back projection for car travelling sequences. * Robert Winter has been associated with the film and television industries since he appeared in three Gracie Fields films in the mid-1930s. He joined Ealing Studios as an associate editor in 1942 and worked there on more than twenty features. After working with other studios he became a founding member of Yorkshire Television in 1967.
