The Romanian-Hungarian border, drawn at the end of the peace process that followed the First World War, was from the beginning, and continues today, a controversial topic in historical research of the two neighboring countries. The intensity whereby each of the two dialogue partners have sustained more or less argued over time their thesis, that were launched on the internal and external market of the history books, has fluctuated, being influenced by a complexity of political, ideological or economical factors. In this study I want to present a brief image of the themes and topics that dominate the Hungarian and Romanian research, namely the causality relationships that are tied in the argumentations of their studies. Keywords : Trianon, treaty, interwar, Hungary, perception The British historian Edward Augustus Freeman (1823-1892) defined history as a mere “historical past” (Stephens, 1895: 19), even if we are tempted to say it is more than that. Yet, we should also be aware of the role played by politics or political trends in writing history. We should not ignore that certain schools and historical trends are connected to politics. Therefore, it would be best to detach history from political parties and ideological influences. Yet reality shows us that things are different and this science is influenced by several elements that are sometimes hidden by historians themselves. The same history differs from one region to another, from one period to another. Historical research may obey totalitarian power, external pressure and often national revival periods throughout political crises. There are moments when nations break from their obscure past and need psychological stimuli, thus resorting to their glorious past, or when nations are hit by national catastrophes and seek for reasons to survive. The Hungarian historiographer Stephen Bela Vardy considered that the Hungarian and Polish peoples were amongst the first in Central Europe to reach a certain maturity of self-awareness in the decades at the end of the 18 th century and the 19 th century materialised in the following years in a complex process of cultural and political revival of their nations passing through different means of writing history, from the Romantic to political-ideological historiography (Vardy, 1982: 361). Out of the pioneers of the Romantic trend also known as “delusion hunters”, he reminded Adam Paloczi-Horvath (1760-1820) and Istvan Horvat (1784-1846) whose writings had become the bases of the Hungarian nationalist historiography. * PhD., Lecturer, Department of International

The analysis is focused on the role of lustration and the opening of communist secret police files in encouraging accountability and promoting the rule of law. An overview of these developments in the countries of the region – including Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia – emphasizes the different approaches undertaken in dealing with the abuses and crimes committed by previous non-democratic governments. These differences are examined in relationship to three interrelated variables: (1) the exit mode from communism; (2) the nature of the communist regime; and (3) the politics of the present.

  • Microsoft the Guardian Angel Vol 2
PREFACE There is no way I can begin my second volume of the trilogy “MICROSOFT – the Guardian Angel” without firstly focusing on one of the most serious allegations in my first book, issued in June, an allegation that was also printed on cover IV of the volume. I quote accurately: As a result of five years of reporter investigations, I have the feeling that the IT giant was imposed on the market using heavy political police instruments. Even if no blame can be brought – for now – on Bill Gates’ company, the mega-business has only one beneficiary: the MICROSOFT COMPANY. Consequently we will have to shed some light on my legitimate interest in this trilogy. I have also taken to make the case public to meet the directions and recommendations of the European Union, which call for such situations be made public, throughout the entire community territory, precisely for a broader acknowledgement of the criminal phenomenon and of high level corruption. In other words, to quote Monica Macovei a Romanian EP: “let’s not pretend we’re unaware” of what this is about and how we should go about the generalized corruption in Romania. This is because Europe considers software and IT&C development as a strategic field, 8 MICROSOFT THE GUARDIAN ANGEL - UM 0666 9 of major importance for innovations in information categories as “ok”, “uncertain” and “action needed” technology, so that the old continent should be in the (see Appendix 1). position to enter an equal competition with the USA, Likewise, the ECIS Report speaks about on legal grounds, mutually agreed by the two parties.

The emphasis on its popular and national character transformed the Resistance into the struggle of the whole country to rid Italy of the German invaders and the small number of Italian fascists who remained their allies, but in ways that took no account of the complexity of people’s reactions and the different ways in which Italians experienced the years immediately after the fall of fascism. In the last decade, however, numerous accounts have been published that contradict the images of the Resistance that for 30 years have constituted the ‘official’ memory of the Italian Republic. As a result, the Resistance offers a classic example of the ‘public use of history’, in which historical interpretation has served primarily to justify party political, instutitional and idelogical ends.

COMPETING IDENTITIES THE CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA Valentin Florin Ion “A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Russian and East European Studies.” Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Robert M. Jenkins Graeme Robertson Peter Sherwood ©2013 Valentin Florin Ion ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract VALENTIN FLORIN ION: Competing Identities The Construction of National Identity in the Borderland Moldova (Under the direction of Robert M. Jenkins) This paper discusses the competing processes for national identity construction in the Republic of Moldova between a Moldovan national identity and a Romanian national identity. The paper follows three main theories of national identity construction coined by Keith Darden, David Laitin and Rogers Brubaker and surveys the implementation of mass schooling in interwar Romania, the shift in national identity of Moldova during the Soviet Union and the process of national identity building in independent Moldova. I argue that the group who controls institutions also controls the future identity of the country. The education system is the main creator of national identity and after the collapse of the Soviet Union the Moldovan education system was controlled by the pro-Romanian identity groups. I conclude that the number of Moldovans who self-identify with Romanian language has increased significantly in the last two decades. iii Acknowledgement I would like to thank my advisor Robert M. Jenkins for guidance and patience in the process of writing this paper. He supported me throughout both academic years of a growth process at the UNC Chapel Hill.

  • The Anti-Humans: Student Re-Education in Romanian Prisons: a Review of the Historical Evidence and Psychological Theory
The Anti-Humans: Student Re-Education in Romanian Prisons: A Review of the Historical Evidence and Psychological Theory Matthew Raphael Johnson Johnstown, PA “When you suffer a little, you become hateful. When you suffer a lot, you forgive” Fr. Roman Braga, survivor of the Pitesti GULag The communist regime in Romania was established between 1944 and 1948 by the force of the Red Army. What followed was typical of the USSR and China, that is, a massive program of purges, prisons and economic collapse that signaled total control by Soviet bureaucrats over a nation. Anyone attached to the former governments, any nationalist or supporter of Orthodox Romania was destroyed in a few years (Dragomir and Stanescu, 2015). While estimates vary, from the end of the war to the mid 1960s, almost 150 prison camps operated for political crimes housing almost a million unfortunates. Several million were kicked out of the country from 1945 to the end of the Ceausescu era. All told, about two million were victimized by the regime. The most outrageous of the camps were Mislea, Suceava, Jilava, Pitesti, Cernavoda, Sighet, Aiud, Periprava and Gherla. There were many, many others. These were the core of the Romanian GULag system. For this Hitler was defeated and it received little coverage in the west. The number of deaths were high and, though records exist from the old Ministry of the Interior, these shouldn't be taken seriously. This occurred all over eastern Europe and soon, the orgy of death would be spread to China. Stalin then set his sights on Greece, Italy and Turkey.
