An elegant oasis in the arid lands of Samburu; Joy’s Camp is built on the site of ’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book. The 10 chic canvas bedrooms have breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. The camp overlooks a large natural spring where elephant and jostle for watering rights with herds of buffalo and the rare desert species of Beisa Oryx, and Grevy’s . Working towards holistic wildlife conservation between Shaba National Reserve and the new surrounding Nakuprat-Gotu Wildlife (Community) Conservancy, Joy's Camp and the C&P Community Trust raised enough funds to build an outpost for the Conservancy rangers. Our goal with this project is to reinstate an effective ranger presence so that Shaba's wildlife is properly protected through poaching & cattle encroachment patrols. . Joy’s Camp is supporting several local schools around Shaba and clients are encouraged to donate towards text books, bursaries and class furniture. . 70% of Joy’s Camp staff have been recruited from local communities and trained on site. . An Environmental Impact Study was carried out prior to the construction of Joy’s Camp. Before the first stone was laid anywhere in the camp, the delicate environment of Shaba was taken into account. . Any timber used by the camp is from renewable sources, or deadwood, and every care is taken that the impact of the camp on the reserve is a positive one. . Joy’s Camp prides itself on using solar energy for both lighting and heating water in all its rooms. Resource use is minimized wherever possible. . Joy’s Camp was awarded “GOLD Level” by Ecotourism Kenya in recognition of its high level of environmental responsibility. There are only 8 Gold-rates properties in Kenya.

. The spring in front of camp has constant wildlife; clients can view game from their tents. . Shaba is still very much "untouched wilderness". There is only one other lodge & very few vehicles in the reserve. . Shaba is leopard country, with several leopard territories around the camp. . Joy’s Camp is surrounded by beautiful landscape features: the rocky gorge of Ewaso Nyiro River, a number of dotted springs, chilly crystal clear waterfall at Sharinki Falls (depending on rainfall) and volcanic peaks. . There are many Northern species of wildlife unique to Shaba and the drier north of Kenya: Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, gerenuk, striped hyena, Somali ostrich, and reticulated giraffe. As well as the northern species, Shaba has a healthy population of lion, leopard, and cheetah. Elephant and buffalo are plentiful in season. . Shaba is a birdwatchers paradise with hundreds of species seen from the comfort of the camp.
