THE INDUSTRIAL DISTRICTS NOTICE 1954

C. W. M. NORRIE, Governor-General PURSUANT to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act 1954, His Excellency the Governor-General hereby gives the following notice.

NOTICE 1. This notice may be cited as the Industrial Districts Notice 1954. 2. New Zealand is hereby divided into eight industrial districts, being the districts named and described in the Schedule hereto. 3. The following notices are hereby revoked, namely: Ca) The notice dated the 2nd day of January 1895 constituting the Northern, Wellington, West land, Canterbury, and Otago and Southland Industrial Districts*: (b) The notice dated the 12th day of June 1899 constituting the Taranaki Industrial District and altering the boundaries of the Northern Industrial Districtt: (c) The notice dated the 9th dil-y of April 1903 constituting the Nelson and Marlborough Industrial Districts:j:.

SCHEDULE THE NORTHERN INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT ALL that area bounded by a line commencing at a point in the middle of the mouth of the Mokau River; thence proceeding northerly, north­ westerly, easterly, and south-easterly generally along the sea coast, crossing the mouths of all harbours and inlets, to the thirty-ninth parallel of south latitude; thence westerly along the -thirty-ninth parallel of south latitude to its intersection with the middle of the Wanganui River; thence north-easterly along a right line to the source of the Mokau River; thence down the middle of the Mokau River to its mouth, being the point of commencement; including all adjacent islands. THE T ARANAKI INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT All that area bounded by a line commencing at a point in the middle of the mouth of the Mokau River; thence proceeding up the middle of the Mokau River to its source; thence south-westerly along a right line to the intersection of the middle of the Wanganui River with the thirty-ninth parallel of south latitude; thence down the middle of the Wanganui River to its confluence with the Pakikau Stream (formerly known as Kowere or Kowhere) at the eastern boundary of Block VIII, Omara Survey District; thence south-westerly along a right line to the middle of the mouth of the Patea River; thence north-westerly and north-easterly generally along the sea coast to the middle of the mouth of the Mokau River, the point of commencement.

THE WELLINGTON INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT All that area bounded by a line commencing at the intersection of the middle of the Wanganui River with the thirty-ninth parallel of south latitude; thence proceeding easterly along that parallel of latitude to its intersection with the sea coast; thence south-westerly, westerly, and northerly generally along the sea coast, crossing the mouths of all harbours and inlets, to the middle of the mouth of the Patea River; thence north-easterly along a right line to the confluence of the Pakikau Stream (formerly known as Kowere or Kowhere) with the Wanganui River; thence up the middle of the Wanganui River to its intersection with the thirty-ninth parallel of south latitude, being the point of commencement; including all adjacent islands and the Chatham Islands.

THE NELSON INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT All that area bounded by a line commencing at Cape Farewell and proceeding south-easterly and north-easterly generally along the sea coast to Pe!orus Sound; thence along the generally north-western shore of Pelorus Sound and the shore of Elaine Bay in Tennyson Inlet to Red Point; thence south-westerly to and along the leading ridge to Boundary Trig, and along the summit of the range through Mount McLaren, McLaren Peak, Editor Hill, Elliot Peak, Castor Peaks, Mount Duppa, Saddle Hill, Maungatapu, Mount Stewart, Slaty Peak, Old Man Peak, Mount Rintoul, Bishops Cap, Ward Pass, Chrome Peak, and Top House Saddle to and along the summits of Saint Arnaud Range and to Mount Humboldt; thence north-westerly along a right line to the confluence of Eight Mile or Boundary Creek with the ; thence northerly to and along the leading ridge to Bald Hill; thence north-easterly generally along the summits of the Lyell, Marine, and Ranges through Wangapeka Saddle and Mount Luna to Mount Arthur; thence north-westerly along the summit of the Tasman Range through Pyramid and Gordon Peaks, Mount Peel, and Aorere Peak to Mount Domett and along the northern watershed of Kohaihai River to Mount Barr; thence south-westerly generally along the western watershed of Kohaihai River and a leading ridge to Kohaihai Bluff; thence north-easterly along the sea coast to Cape Farewell, being the point of commencement; including D'Urville Island and its adjacent islands, Stephens Island, Trio Islands, Maud Island, Tawhitinui Island, and all other adjacent islands. 1954/221] Industrial Districts Notice 1954 1403

THE MARLBOROUGH INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT All that area bounded by a line commencing at Red Point at the southern extremity of Elaine Bay in Tennyson Inlet; thence proceeding in a generally easterly and southerly direction along the sea coast to the mouth of the Clarence River; thence up the middle of the Clarence River to Lake Tennyson; thence north-westerly along a right line to Mount Humboldt, being a point on the boundary of the Nelson Industrial District hereinbefore described; thence north-easterly along the boundary of that district to Red Point, being the point of commence­ ment; including Tarakaipa Island, Chetwode Islands, Forsyth Island, Motuara, Long Island, Oruawairau Island, Arapawa Island, The Brothers, and all other adjacent islands.

THE WESTLAND INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT All that area bounded by a line commencing at Kohaihai Bluff in Block XIII, Whakapo Survey District, being a point on the boundary of the Nelson Industrial District, hereinbcfore described; thence proceeding generally easterly and southerly along the boundary of that district to Mount Humboldt; then south-westerly along the summits of the Spenser Mountains and the Southern Alps to Mount Aspiring; thence westerly along a right line to the mouth of the Awarua River; thence north-easterly along the sea coast to Kohaihai Bluff, being the point of commencement.

THE CANTERBURY INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT All that area bounded by a line commencing at the summit of Mount Humboldt in the Spenser Mountains; thence proceeding south­ easterly along a right line to the middle of the outlet of Lake Tennyson; thence down the middle of the Clarence River to its mouth; thence south-westerly generally along the sea coast, crossing the mouths of all harbours and inlets, to the mouth of the Waitaki River; thence up the middle of the Waitaki River to its source at Lake Ohau; thence westerly along a right line to the summit of Mount Aspiring; thence north-easterly generally along the summits of the Southern Alps and Spenser Mountains to Mount Humboldt, being the point of commence­ ment; including all adjacent islands.

THE OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT All that area bounded by a line commencing at the mouth of the Awarua River; thence proceeding easterly along a right line to the summit of Mount Aspiring and a right line to the outlet of Lake Ohau; thence down the middle of the Waitaki River to its mouth; thence south-westerly, westerly, and north-easterly generally along the sea coast, crossing the mouths of all harbours and inlets, to the mouth of the Awarua River, the point of commencement; including all adjacent and outlying islands and Stewart Island. EXPLANATORY NOTE [This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.] This notice consolidates the existing notices under which the eight industrial districts are constituted for the purposes of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act 1954. The districts cover the same areas as before, but the boundaries are defined in the Schedule more accurately and in greater detail. Also, the Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, and Otago and Southland districts now include adjacent and outlying islands mentioned in the Schedule.
