Hale, the New York Mets’ third base and infield coach the past two seasons, replaces Joel Skinner, whose contract was not renewed. A San Jose, Calif. native who attended Campolindo High School in Moraga, Hale previously served under Melvin as third base and infield coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2007-09. During that stint, he played a prominent role on Arizona’s 2007 club which posted a 90-72 record and captured the National League West Division championship. A former Major League player, William (Chip) Hale III enjoyed seven seasons as a minor league manager in the Arizona organization before joining Melvin. He steered the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders to the Pacific Coast League and Triple-A titles in 2006 with a franchise- record 91-53 mark. His 220 wins and .542 winning percentage as Tucson’s manager from 2004-06 is also a franchise all- time record. He led Rookie-League Missoula to the Pioneer League’s best overall mark (44-32) in 2000 and to the Northern Division’s second-half championship in 2001. Hale was named the Pioneer League and Baseball America’s Rookie-Level Manager of the Year in 2001.

Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. Berkman hit just .248 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs last season, which he began with the Houston Astros before being traded to the New York Yankees. But Berkman, who turns 35 in February, told Fox Sports last week that he's fully recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery that bothered him much of last season. He hit 25 homers as recently as 2009 for Houston. Adding power is the A's most pressing need. They would have a hole at DH if they decide not to tender a contract to Jack Cust, which is a strong possibility. The A's must decide by 9 p.m. Thursday (PT) whether to tender contracts to their 10 arbitration-eligible players, including Cust. Other logical non-tender candidates: outfielder Travis Buck, reliever Brad Ziegler and either of two third basemen -- Kevin Kouzmanoff or Edwin Encarnacion. It's believed the A's would consider signing Berkman to a one- or two-year deal, though the team doesn't comment on free- agent negotiations.
