Doors Open Day is a chance to take a peek behind doors that are often closed to the public. Opening times and arrangements differ from venue to venue so please check the information provided for each venue in advance to make the most of your visits on the day. Moray Council are organising the day in Moray with the event being organised nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust. Thanks to all of the owners and volunteers for their assistance.

Built in 1905-06, the church, which is regularly used as a wedding venue, contains many attractive stained glass windows, including a World War i window and several memorial windows. The fine hexagonal pulpit dates from 1684 from the old St giles Church in Elgin. www.elginstgileschurch.co.uk p

Elgin High Church was built in the 1840s as a Free Church – it then joined with the Church of Scotland in 1929. The interior is largely unchanged since it opened with original pews. There will be historical displays on the day and toys for smaller children. Designed in 1842 by Elgin architect Thomas Mackenzie in the italianate style - visit the campanile-like tower where the custodian once lived. From 11 am -1pm, join us to recreate the Museum in miniature and other paper crafts. All ages, but children accompanied by adult. Free. Pick up a leaflet at the Visitors’ Centre (open 1 til 4) for a self-guided tour of the Ecovillage and spiritual community, which was founded in 1962. guided tours start at 2pm and 3pm and last 1.5 hours. See the Universal Hall, the whisky barrel houses, the nature sanctuary and the lovely gardens. There is a children’s play area on site and a café and shop. www.findhorn.org p

The Heritage Centre tells the story of Findhorn from prehistoric times to the present day, including the secrets of the sands. The icehouse has underground chambers to store ice for salmon. A large Victorian building just south-east of Forres, set in extensive gardens and woods. Originally a hydropathic establishment with a lovely ballroom and dining room and is now an Education Centre. Built in 1838/39 on the site of the existing Tollbooth which has been in existence for over 800 years. Main features include historic paintings, a court room and 6 prisoner cells. Birnie Kirk, believed to be built in 1140 or possibly earlier, is one of the oldest churches in Scotland still in use for Sunday p services. in the 12th Century it was the Cathedral for the of Moray. Built in 1898, this is the Church of Scotland church near to . Some building features are modelled on the nearby Abbey. Special display on “130 years of the guild”. p

Dated 1781. The interior is dominated by an unusual three decker pulpit, which was built to accommodate minister, p precentor and beadle. Some believe the lowest deck was designed for sinners made to sit in front of the congregation in shame. Set in a rural location, next to the A940, surrounded by mature trees. The large former manse lies to the east and the sizeable graveyard surrounds the church on three sides. The church was built in 1741 and renovated in the early 19th century. p Exhibition of bibles.

A ‘Parliamentary church’ built to standard design by Thomas Telford in 1826 of which the bellcote survives. Remodelled in gothic Revival manner in 1900. A simple harled church built in 1806 as replacement for a medieval church which stood a little to the south. The porch houses the inveravon Pictish Stones. Refreshments available and a children’s quiz. p

This gothic church was designed by Alexander Ross, 1882 replacing the ‘small, plain building’ (1808) behind Land Street. Amongst the fittings is the ‘Seabury Chair’ - discover why the first American Anglican Bishop was ordained on that chair in p Aberdeen in 1784. Built in 1876, the Church and the elaborately carved freestone font were designed by Alexander Ross of inverness. Stained glass windows including a Rose window at the west end. The East end of the church was remodelled in 1951 when the present marble p altar was installed.

Can you spot the Moray Firth dolphins from the visitor centre, which is within the old Coastguard lookout building? The building is on top of what was the biggest Pictish fort.
