Back to Ordinary Time; it might seem that we call this season “Ordinary” because there are no special feasts or celebrations that take place, for the most part, during this time of the year. But “Ordinary” has another meaning in the liturgical sense. Our context for “Ordinary Time” comes from the Latin, ordinalis which refers to the ordering or numbering of things in their progression or succession; in this case, the passage of days one after another. In Ordinary Time we mark the passing of time all of which is sanctified because the Son of God, Jesus Christ, has entered human history and consecrated our days through his saving death and Resurrection from the dead. Ordinary Time is one liturgical season lasting for thirty-three or thirty-four weeks depending upon when the movable feasts fall in a given year. Though one season of Ordinary Time is divided in two halves: one after Epiphany and one after Pentecost; the Feast of the of the Lord that we celebrated last week is at once the conclusion of the Christmas Season and the First Sunday in Ordinary Time.

We are at the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. In keeping with the manifestation of Jesus as God’s own Son through his baptism in the Jordan, today we find John the Baptist giving testimony to Jesus, God’s own Son and anointed Messiah, the Christ. The Baptist always points away from himself and toward Jesus: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me’” (John 1:29-30). The Baptist is a good model for us as we begin this liturgical season of Ordinary Time. Our whole vocation is to recognize the centrality of the person of Jesus Christ in our lives and order our days and way of living in keeping with the truth he preaches in the gospel.

Once we accept God’s saving action in our lives, and the initiative always begins with his saving promise of friendship with us, then we are able to give witness to the Lord to others. Even the Baptist’s eyes had to be gradually opened to the person of Jesus Christ and the meaning of his mission given him by the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit: “I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel” (1:31). We do not take in all of the implications of our faith all at once; it is a gradual process of the mystery of God’s presence daily unfolding in our lives. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: “The days come and go like muffled and veiled figures sent from a distant friendly party; but they say nothing, and if we do not use the gifts they bring, they carry them as silently away.” Every day we are given by God is sacred and filled with possibility to be his presence for others. We should not let those opportunities pass us by. We are doing more each day than simply marking off another day on the calendar, we are growing, we hope, in holiness and more what God intends us to be like. Thus, while we are now in a kind of dull period of the winter that is cold and gray, each day is still charged with the power of God. We pray for the grace to use each day to open our hearts more profoundly to the love of God which changes us and makes us grow ever more in the image of the Lord Jesus Christ, our source of , our hope.

Thank you for your great generosity in our Christmas collection. The total offered was $40,881. It is a great help to meeting our financial responsibilities. I am not ashamed to tell you that I was praying against a White Christmas – in fact all Bing Crosby songs were banned from the parish office! Thankfully despite the pandemic restrictions and rain on Christmas Eve the weather cleared and so many joined us to celebrate the mystery and joy of Christmas. But the support of our parish really falls to our parishioners who are always with us and who make great sacrifices to support our parish. I am grateful for your support that makes the good work of our parish continue and thrive with God’s help. It is a sacrifice to make the generous offerings that you do to our parish. I want you to know how grateful I am to you for your never failing generosity and for all of the many ways that you support our parish. Please know that every member of this parish and all those whom you love have a place in my prayers every day. I never fail to be humbled by your goodness and generosity of heart. Please pray for our parish in this new year of 2021. May Our Lady of the Holy Angels, the Blessed Mary, intercede for you and all those who commit themselves to the Gospel of her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.
