  • Journalism, Truth and Healthy Communities
Journalism, Truth and Healthy Communities Healthy people, healthy businesses, healthy governments — healthy communities — are all best informed and engaged by independent community journalists who examine school budgets, expose scandals, question practices and politics, scrutinize environmental practices, who champion good and who dare to challenge fear and falsehoods. The work we do in our newsrooms enhances community life, it exposes mental and social health care problems and brings solutions forward, it relentlessly exposes overspending in our governments, and highlights the great people who live and work all around us. Communities are healthier, more engaged, more resilient and better able to thrive when informed by truth. EIN 13−1038730 Name United States Bankruptcy Court Southern District of New York Date case filed for chapter 11 3/27/17 Case number: 17−22445−rdd Official Form 309F (For Corporations or Partnerships) Notice of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case 12/15 For the debtor listed above, a case has been filed under chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. An order for relief has been entered. This notice has important information about the case for creditors, debtors, and trustees, including information about the meeting of creditors and deadlines. Read both pages carefully. The filing of the case imposed an automatic stay against most collection activities. This means that creditors generally may not take action to collect debts from the debtor or the debtor's property. For example, while the stay is in effect, creditors cannot sue, assert a deficiency, repossess property, or otherwise try to collect from the debtor. Creditors cannot demand repayment from the debtor by mail, phone, or otherwise. Creditors who violate the stay can be required to pay actual and punitive damages and attorney's fees. Confirmation of a chapter 11 plan may result in a discharge of debt. A creditor who wants to have a particular debt excepted from discharge may be required to file a complaint in the bankruptcy clerk's office within the deadline specified in this notice.

Knight News Challenge Casting the Net Wide for Innovation A quest for fresh ideas and a dose of humility drive the Knight News Challenge BY CHRISTOPHER CONNELL THE KNIGHT NEWS CHALLENGE reviewers, meeting at the foundation’s headquarters in a Miami skyscraper overlooking Biscayne Bay, were divided over one intriguing entry. A 25-year-old freelance tech reporter and blogger wanted to pioneer a new, public subscription model for investigative journalism. David Cohn wanted to launch a website in San Francisco where reporters could pitch ideas for stories and invite the public to contribute small amounts, on the order of $10 to $50, to underwrite the investigations. The public – the crowd – would decide which stories to go after. When enough money came in – as little as a few hundred – as much as several thousand dollars, the reporter would go out and do the job. Spot.Us, as Cohn dubbed his brainchild, would publish the results on its website, but also look for other media outlets for the work. It wasn’t that people didn’t think it was a good idea. But there That the lean, scruffy Cohn could go from graduate were a lot of questions and much student at the Columbia School of Journalism to media discussion about special interests innovator capable of placing stories in The New York Times seemed, at the time, a pipedream. But this was and the co-opting of the process: if a new digital age, with mainstream newsroom you paid for a story, did you expect staffs and budgets in freefall and millions of people, certain kinds of outcomes? young and old, getting their news online.
