News Focus Government Moves to Raise Tap Water Price the Government Is Planning to Raise Water Rates News Focus Government moves to raise tap water price The government is planning to raise water rates. The Ministry of Environment has instructed some 160 city and provincial governments to publicize details of deficits to explain the hike. "We hope that people will better appreciate the fact that clean water is an important resource that can run out without proper management," an official said. "Of course, along the way, we want to pass on the message that tap water is underpriced," he said. Government officials say tap water supplies have been kept at artificially low prices, forcing local governments to run up large deficits. Currently, the country has one of the lowest water charges, which the government says means consumers are not careful about conserving the natural resource. According to the ministry's 2012 data, one cubic meter of water costs 814.7 won to process but is sold for an average price nationwide of 649.1 won. Park Eun-kyung, appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the former president of Korea Water Forum, said the price increase is long overdue. "It should have happened a long time ago," Park said. Korea and the U.S. have said that Pyongyang must first show its sincerity toward denuclearization before the disarmament-for-aid talks can resume. But China, which has been a long-time ally to North Korea, has been urging Seoul and Washington to lower their bar for the talks.
