The Handbooks have been divided into three sections. Part A presents data obtained from the field on land use patterns, civic amenities such as drinking water, post offices, primary schools etc. available in each village. Part B presents demographic data down to the village level. Part C presents official statistics gathered from sources other than the Census of, 1971 and also inclu des notes on various aspects of each district. Our attempt has been to present information concerning each district which is at once relevant and as detailed as possible, and we hope these volumes will prove useful to scholars, planners and those who are working to better the economic condition of the people in our State. Chapter-VII Conclusion - Future Directions - Suggestions ~-- VII.l. INTRODUCTION The present study has sought to make an analysis of the problems of urban development with a focus on urban habitat and levels of development in the district of Koch Bihar. Data and information collected for this purpose have been made available through interviews of the councilors and elected members, officials and the general people or citizens, on the basis of prepared questionnaires and also gathered from available primary documentary and secondary sources. The state of Koch Bihar, which once formed a part of ancient kingdom of Kamrupa, Khens, Koch has a great historical tradition. Even after the independence of India, Koch Bihar still remained a feudatory native state in political relation with the Govt. of India under Hindu King- the Maharaja of Koch Bihar. In January, 1950, Koch Bihar merged with the state of West Bengal is presently the farthest north-eastern border district of West Bengal adjacent to Assam and Bangladesh. The district forms six municipal towns and four census towns. Most of the towns situated along the rivers and the morphology of these towns are characterized by Government and public buildings, crossing roads, tanks or Dighis, parks, bus stop, shop and establishments, markets or bazaar, playground and temples etc .The urban population in different towns in the district has grown steadily. Except Mekhliganj, the district of urban population becomes high to very high (5001 - 9000 per 2 km ). This is due to the flock of the people from the country side to towns for inadequate . of job opportunities and other facilities like education, medical services, water supply, conservancy and the migrants come from Bangladesh for political disturbances.

  • 38 Chapter-Ii Geographical
CHAPTER-II GEOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY AREA 2.1. Introduction: Study Area is the prime concern of any research especially in a spatial science like Geography. It is the place, based on which, the researcher carries out in-depth study and data collection. A discussion on the study area is fundamental as it helps in understanding the contextual background of the area under investigation. Mead defined study area as “the geographical studies pursued in a well-defined area” (Mead, 1969). Generally, a research is conducted within or beyond an area delimited by political or physical boundaries. However, it is sometimes difficult to delineate a study area as it may stretch beyond either of the boundaries. The study area is the geographic framework within which the field work is conducted, and thus its exact areal extent must be determined to focus and further define the purposes of the research. As the present research is based on the Geo-environmental study of the wetlands of Tufanganj and Koch Bihar Sadar subdivisions within Koch Bihar District, the study area and subsequent data collection have been confined to four community development blocks, namely Tufanganj-I, Tufanganj-II, Koch Bihar-I and Koch Bihar-II. Thus the main focus of the present chapter is on the historical background, physical and socio-economic background as well as the administrative jurisdiction and geographic location of Koch Bihar District. 2.2. Historical Background: Etymologically, ‘Koch Bihar’ or ‘Cooch Behar’ has been derived from two words- ‘Cooch’ and ‘Behar’. While the word ‘Cooch’ is a corrupted form of the word ‘Koch’ that signifies an indigenous mongoloid tribe, the word ‘Behar’ is derived from Sanskrit word ‘Vihara’, which means ‘abode’, or ‘sport’.

  • Worship of Balarama in Coochbehar: a Historical Study
Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (Hum.), Vol. 60(1), 2015, pp. 79-90 WORSHIP OF BALARAMA IN COOCHBEHAR: A HISTORICAL STUDY Bijoy Kumar Sarkar* Abstract The worship of Balarama, the elder of Krishna was very popular in the Kamta- Koch Kingdom; he is still worshipped independently or along with Krishna in a number of temples in Coochbehar. However, he still remains utterly untouched historically and independently as he should have been. An attempt has been made here to study the background, nature and extent of Balarama’s worship in the Coochbehar State along with exploring out the causes of its immense popularity. The question of Balarama’s worship as one of the Vyuhas and/or of the Avataras or something else has also been addressed. Keeping in view the simultaneous worship of Balarama and Manasa on special occasions, their relationship in popular concept has also been investigated. We have consulted the original source materials complementing with relevant secondary sources and undertaken field trips to explore the issue. It is found that Balaram’s identity as a patron of agriculture and a deity of fertility - Hala (ploughshare) being his most distinctive weapon and Halayudha as his nomenclature – contributed considerably to his popularity among the pre-dominantly agricultural people of the Kamata-Koch Kingdom. The history of Vishnu-worship may be traced in Kamarupa from early times in light of erection of a cave temple for Balabhadrasvamin in the 5th century A.D. In Kamarupa and Kamata-Koch Kingdom, the Bhakti movement, known as Neo- Vaishnavism, was launched by Sankaradeva.
