Dear Friends,

We’re 25! And we’re just getting started!

As we express that enthusiasm, we would be remiss not to acknowledge the work and unremitting devotion of the last twenty-five years. After all, it’s that work that makes us feel so passionate about belonging to this organization.

PACTT began as a place of true innovation - the kind of innovation that must have left our founders breathless with the sheer scope of the work – yet clearly there was an unbridled energy poured into the organization that reflects their creativity, enthusiasm, knowledge, and commitment.

Their vision built a structure that was able to withstand the forces that often bar the way of a new venture. Thus, what began as a dream became a future of which we’re proudly a part. The gratitude we have for the founders of PACTT and their willingness to take on the task of transforming the way society views people with autism is immeasurable.

How do we honor the work done and carry the spirit of innovation, creativity, and commitment forward into the next quarter century? What is our role in helping the 150,000 people living with autism in the Chicagoland area find their rightful place? While we don’t have all the answers, we know that an organization like PACTT, one that is limitless in potential and opportunity, will focus on improving the daily endeavors of our participants while building the connections that grow the organization, its voice, and its commitment to adults and children with autism.

Futures can be daunting and they can be exciting. This is a time in the state of where we are talking about “what’s next” in very real ways. But rest assured: PACTT is there, leading the call for inclusive living and support for the people we serve.

Perhaps one of the greatest fruits of all of the labor of these past 25 years is the bearing of the knowledge required to support a person with autism in their home community. We know what it takes to make sure our participants can prepare, choose, work and dream. We also know what purpose-filled lives they experience and what they contribute to their communities. We know this because the support you provide helps us to realize with great clarity the real significance of what we do today and into the next twenty-five years and beyond. We are excited by the future of this organization and cannot thank you enough for the ways in which you make this success possible.

2018_PACTTAnnualReportV2.indd 3 11/7/18 10:50 AM A t isQuarter impossible to talkCentury about the years of to comeProgress without thinking about the past 25 years. PACTT is fortunate to have a team of professionals who have been here for 5, 10, 15, and yes, all 25 years. With that in mind, this report highlights some of the voices of the many colleagues who helped build PACTT into what it is today – a strong organization deeply committed to connecting people with autism to the community. IEvery journey has a beginning and a first day on the job. For the colleagues who helped propel PACTT to where it is today, somewhere along the line that job became a career, a passion and a commitment. So what was that first day like?

“I remember my interview. I walked up to the “When I first started teaching, I was co-teaching group home and thought I was in the wrong with a veteran team member. We took our place. I was expecting some type of sign somewhat rambunctious high school class to indicating that I was at an organization and the park, and one particular student decided didn’t see one. I noticed that there were six he was going to walk with me. He held my names on a colorful mailbox and thought, well, arm, gave it some gentle squeezes, and we I will ring the doorbell and see… In my early walked uneventfully to the park and back. I days working at the home, I was determined thought nothing of it, to be honest. It was a to find things that the residents would like to lovely outing. When we returned to school, our do, learn to do, and want to do. It was fun Lisa Fegert - Director of Programs founder was standing at the door. I remember and risky and rewarding! We went everywhere she took one look at me, and at the student, – walked everywhere really – downtown Oak and then at my co-teacher, and said ‘it looks Park, Frank Lloyd Wright homes, library, toy like Matt decided you’re a keeper!’ Ah, the bliss store and every single park for miles. I would of oblivion. I had no idea just what a challenge fill up a backpack with juice boxes and granola that walk *could* have been.” bars and start walking with whoever would ~ Paula go with me. I never dreamed that this was the start of a journey that would change my life. “ ~ Lisa Paula Jablonski - Principal

PACTT has never been just an organization, and it is in these stories of the beginning that you can see our founding spirit developing. First days at any job can be daunting – first days at PACTT can be transformative. One cannot observe the determination of participants taking risks and staring down challenges without knowing that they will lead us to a place we could never reach on our own.

An organization like PACTT can only thrive if lessons come from those served, and the journey together is the reward. Using leading care and education concepts that promote well-being remains the primary focus along this journey to community belonging. PACTT has become a thriving place of opportunity by realizing that learning is not just about what we should do from the perspective of expertise, but to recognize the ways in which our participants are and should be the experts of their own lives. Over the course of 25 years, there has been much we have learned from our relationships with these “experts”.

“We have learned that everyone has a right to “I’ve found a career that is fulfilling and be involved in the community. We work hard to meaningful. I’ve learned how to listen better overcome the challenges that make it difficult and to listen to the spaces between the words. for some individuals to do that. “I have learned to celebrate the smallest successes because those successes mean greater independence on a daily basis. I see the possibility of replicating the PACTT model of supporting individuals with “Working together and helping our autism in every community.” ~ Chris Thomas “Accept people for who they are and where participants to be independent is the most they are at in that given moment and support important thing we do. PACTT works hard them to where they want to be. Be present in to make our participants feel respected, the current moment and know that all of the know that they are loved, cared for and internal and external noise is just that – noise. listened to. My students have taught me to I have learned to be present with participants be patient, to know that it’s not about me.” and the moment we are sharing and then the ~ Solange Sears – Paraprofessional noise goes away and I feel grounded.” ~ Lisa

Paying attention to the lessons and experiences from the past help us to understand the future. PACTT was started because there was no service model that could support the people we serve. This was the reality, but the vision was imbued with the spirit of endless opportunity, extraordinary optimism, and enduring commitment. Reflecting on a past always helps surface what is important. We are lucky to have many with us who have been along for much of the journey and who can tell us what is important. This is meaningful as we move forward striving to become not just a better, stronger organization, but a leader in the field that helps communities understand what is important to people with autism who are their neighbors, co-workers, and friends. Sharing this knowledge helps to build inclusive communities, making our experience all the more important to share.

While we have spent twenty-five years as a team growing our own professional skills through formal learning and training, something we deeply value, we have partnered with our participants to understand what approach is needed so we can get out of the way and let the learning happen in our daily actions. Our participants face a world that often does not include patience, listening, or predictability. We spend our days making sure we become the place that is needed – the place where you know you are safe, cared for, and engaged.

When these experiences are taken together, the momentum is unstoppable and the opportunities are endless. We know the important place that each action holds in the daily lives of the people PACTT serves. And, we know that we will continue to strive to incorporate the lessons learned from the past to propel us into the future to become an even stronger organization that raises the call for all communities to become open places of opportunity for people with autism.

Change and growth are difficult, but necessary for survival. Despite the obstacles we’ve faced over the years – with state funding, with team turnover, with parents and participants in crisis, with growing pains as an agency – despite all that, we continue to move forward. We move forward toward stronger community engagement for our participants, toward wider awareness and understanding of autism for the greater community, toward more consistent implementation of evidence-based strategies within our programs, toward sustainability as an agency.
