4 PAKU VIEWS ISSUE 6 SUMMER 2013 Our Cover Artist Rachel Olsen

Who better to capture the essence of a Kiwi Summer than Rachel Olsen? “My paintings often depict New Zealand summers and the beautiful coastlines, but whatever I choose to paint has to be uplifting. I ‘feel’ it as I paint it”, relates cover artist Rachel Olsen. “Seaside baches and caravans have been a theme running through my work for some years now. They are about my environment here on the Coromandel. A remnant of the past, these old baches are fast disappearing, and I feel that this is my way of recording a few of them for history”. If Taffy’s Bach seems to glow right off the cover, it’s no wonder! Rachel began her substantial art career working in stained glass for a Leadlight company in Auckland. After several years she started her own small business, Moonstone Glass, and in 1989, moved from Auckland’s North Shore to the Coromandel, where it continued to grow with the support of her partner Scott. “We supplied galleries throughout New Zealand with a unique range of glass pieces such as hangings, mirrors, and jewelry boxes; and we created numerous private commissions for windows, lamps, and other pieces”. Glass was obviously “a real passion” for the artist, who learned the depths of its lessons. “Glass helped me refine my design and composition skills. And the way changing light affects colour, how colours affect one another. Even the textures. These are all important factors I have brought over to my painting work”. H ot Water Beach Caravan As much as Rachel loved her glasswork, after fifteen years, she felt the pull to work in a less restrictive medium. In 1997, she R achel currently paints and exhibits began to paint with a local art group tutored by Tairua artist Paula from her Cooks Beach home on the McNeill. “During this time, I immersed myself in painting, loving Coromandel coast. Her paintings have been widely seen “I can’t resist painting these,” Rachel shares. “They are all around in print, from 2004’s series of reusable us here at Cooks Beach and have such great character–such shopping bags, Telecom cards in a joy to paint. Several NZ Art books have also showcased Rachel’s work. TAFFY & HIS BACH

Rachel remembers the story behind “Taffy’s Bach”, our cover painting: “Scott and I were walking on a small quiet beach on Waiheke Island where there were a few old character-style baches. An interesting looking old guy came out from one and called ‘Have you come to cut my hair?’ Being the only two people there, we called back, ‘No, we were just going for a walk’. “His response was ‘Oh, no worries, come in for a glass of my home brew anyway!’ We spent an enjoyable hour chatting with ‘Taffy’. He told us that originally, many years ago, when his family was young and living in Auckland, they shared ownership of the bach with another family and came over only for holidays. At some point he reluctantly had to sell his share. Time passed, and, Tairua 078647464 when the bach went on the market again, he managed to buy it back and now lives there full time. It is likely he is still there. Taffy was really a delightful character in a delightful bach with a rather unique story! I hope I captured this in the painting”. “What a great excuse for a fun artsy outing. There’s a veritable treasure trove of artistic talent right here on our doorsteps, and the Art Escape’s an open door invitation to discover it. On the last tour, a girlfriend and I had a delicious lunch at Colenso before visiting several studios on the tour. At Paula McNeill’s Pumpkin Hill studio, I bought an original painting titled ‘Red Shadows’. This humble Kiwi bach on Rangitoto Island made the big league by winning an international award for heritage conservation • a first for New Zealand, putting the unassuming Kiwi bach on the world stage. Built in 1928, “Bach 38” was restored and then adapted into a museum offering a glimpse into bach life, and the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Honourable Mention Award recognized the importance of bach settlements in New Zealand as architectural and social history. Susan Yoffe of the Rangitoto Island Historic Conservation Trust says that the bach restoration took four years. “Volunteers carried out this labour of love under the guidance of conservation architects and professional builders”. (Four years? Wonder how many weekends it took to hammer it together initially with nary a professional in sight.) See good.net.nz/magazine/4/the-goods/bach-to-basics for more about the ‘bach community’ on Rangitoto Island.

WWW.PAKUVIEWS.CO.NZ 23 Tairua School ... Developing Global Citizens

New Zealand is surrounded by ocean, and our marine environment is a national treasure for many reasons–food, employment, scientific research, recreation…the list is endless. With such an important global resource on our doorstep, it is essential that our students develop a deep connection and understanding of this aquatic network to ensure its viability for future generations. This year, Room 5 dove in head first by taking part in the E.M.R programme (Experience Marine Reserves). Students like Cade Eliot (pictured), staff and parents spent hours in the waters around Hahei and Cathedral Cove observing aquatic wildlife up close. They were fortunate to experience first hand the awe and wonder of the Orca whales when, five minutes after swimmers finished traversing the marine snorkel trail at Gem Stone Bay, a small pod of the black and white whales descended on the reserve. Principal Brendan Finn stated, “This was one of my all time best experiences as a teacher. Experiences like this help us all reach our goal of becoming truly aware Global Citizens”.

Room 5 students recently engaged in a unique learning experience: they designed, created and recorded 20 minute radio segments, on music through the decades. Local businesses provided sponsorship, and in exchange, the students designed an advertisement to promote on air during their show. There were 5 shows over 5 days, all for different charities. Student Denzel Waite, whose group’s program was about music in the ‘80s, says, “I liked doing the whole radio show and having fun with it. I learnt that I sounded better by licking my lips and smiling when I talked. Our radio show raised funds for Surf Life Saving, and the sponsor was Taste Takeaways.” Kool FM’s Colin McCabe worked closely with Miss Telfar on the creative project. He said he was “very impressed with the content and oral language skills of the students”. Pictured (l to r) with Miss Telfar is Ziggy Heath, Henry Laycock, Flynn Cleary-Morgan and Denzel Waite.

Tairua KINDERGARTEN... fostering children’s curiosity and inquisitiveness in the natural environment around them

The fruits of their labour, such as tomatoes, peas, cucumbers and zucchinis, are eaten straight from the plant, or used in process cooking. This supports the children learning healthy eating habits. The kindergarten also has a productive worm farm and compost bin which the children tend. They have a clear understanding of the worm farm cycle, from feeding the worms their waste fruit and vegetable scraps, to collecting the worm wee for the garden. Worms have the unique ability to convert elements such as minerals, nutrients and microbes from soil or composting systems into an excretion that contains a vast amount of plant nutrients. The children harvest these “vermicasts” which are also put into the garden.
