Netflix Reveals First Looks at €˜Hill House,€™ €˜House of Cards’ Netflix Reveals First Looks at ‘Hill House,’ ‘House of Cards’ 08.27.2018 Netflix revealed images for new series The Haunting of Hill House, set to debut October 12, as well as first-look photos for the sixth and final season of House of Cards, which drops November 2. Just in time for Halloween, The Haunting of Hill House is a modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name that Netflix describes as "a complex family drama wrapped in a chilling horror story." It explores a group of siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country. Now adults, and forced back together in the face of tragedy, the family must finally confront the ghosts of their past-some of which still lurk in their minds while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House. The 10-episode series stars Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Timothy Hutton, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel and Victoria Pedretti star, as well as Lulu Wilson, McKenna Grace, Paxton Singleton, Violet McGraw and Julian Hilliard. The Haunting of Hill House is created, directed and executive-produced by Mike Flanagan (Hush, Oculus, Gerald's Game), who also serves as serves as executive producer alongside Trevor Macy. Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Meredith Averill executive produce, as well, and Averill serves as co-showrunner. It's produced for Netflix by Amblin TV and Paramount Television. The sixth and final season of House of Cards also features family drama of a different kind as Netflix provides a first look at the Shepherds. The streamer's photos introduce Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear as Annette and Bill Shepherd, a sister and brother who inherited Shepherd Unlimited, a leading industrial conglomerate whose family foundations exert a powerful behind-the-scenes force in the American political landscape. The two share a vision for the future of America, as well as a complicated past with the Underwoods. Cody Fern (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, American Horror Story: Apocalypse) stars as Duncan Shepherd, Annette's ambitious and devoted son, who represents the next generation of D.C. power players. In the final season, Claire (Robin Wright) may have risen to power as U.S. president, but her fight to stay at the top is far from over. Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott and Boris McGiver will also return to see the show to its end. House of Cards was put on hiatus in November 2017 when star Kevin Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct, and will continue without him. Melissa James Gibson, Frank Pugliese, Wright, David Fincher, Joshua Donen, Dana Brunetti, Eric Roth, Michael Dobbs and Andrew Davies serve as executive producers. The series was created by Beau Willimon and is produced by Donen/Fincher/Roth, with MRC as the studio, for Netflix..

  • Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms
Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms: Cult Film Fan Practices in the Age of Social Media Branding Stephen William Hay A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the regulations for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the Syfy channel’s broadcast of the television movie Sharknado and the large number of tweets that were sent about it. Sharknado’s audience engaged in cult film viewing practices that can be understood using paracinema theory. Paracinema engagement with cult films has traditionally taken place in midnight screenings in independent movie theatres and private homes. Syfy’s audience was able to engage in paracinematic activity that included making jokes about Sharknado’s low quality of production and interacting with others who were doing the same through the affordances of Twitter. In an age where branding has become increasingly important, Syfy clearly benefited from all the fan activity around its programming. Critical branding theory argues that the value generated by a business’s brand comes from the labour of consumers. Brand management is mostly about encouraging and managing consumer labour. The online shift of fan practices has created new opportunities for brand managers to subsume the activities of consumers. Cult film audience practices often have an emphasis on creatively and collectively engaging in rituals and activities around a text. These are the precise qualities that brands require from their consumers. Sharknado was produced and marketed by Syfy to invoke the cult film subculture as part of Syfy’s branding strategy.

  • Elle.Com Article on Kate Siegel's Viola
Elle.com: Bly Manor's Kate Siegel On Why Love-Not Rage-Drives the Lady of the Lake By Emma Dibdin November 13,2020 It's now been a full month since The Haunting of Bly Manor swept onto Netflix and became everybody's favorite spooky, psychologically unsettling fall binge. If the show has been living in your nightmares rent-free, you're not alone. A big part of the reason why is Viola Willoughby, aka The Lady in the Lake. As played by Kate Siegel, Viola/The Lady in the Lake is a force of nature in every sense—a vibrant and ambitious woman whose stubbornness is both a gift and a curse. After developing a fatal lung disease, Viola refuses to accept her own fate, languishing in a hellish limbo between life and death for years before finally being murdered by her own sister. But even in death, she endures, returning as a vengeful spirit whose presence is so powerful she creates a "gravity well" at Bly Manor, dooming everybody who dies on the property to be trapped there forever. Siegel— whose husband is the series creator Mike Flanagan—is one of many Haunting of Hill House alums who returned for the new season (alongside Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson- Cohen and Carla Gugino). She jumped on the phone with ELLE.com to delve into Viola's haunting arc, some of the mysteries surrounding The Lady in the Lake, and the uneasy parallels between Bly Manor and Donald Trump's delusional response to his 2020 election loss. What kind of conversations did you have with Mike about returning for Bly Manor after playing Theo in Hill House? Early on, Mike was prepping for the new season and he was talking to me about what it would be, but at a certain point I stopped asking about it.
